Hey,
I'm not really sure how to use this website so apologies if wrong.
So I'm at my mother in laws house for Xmas and she had just brought herself this VERY expensive sofa for herself as a self gift.
she has just had it delivered today and its a brand new white sofa, as I have two boys (6 and 7) I told them not to go on it but my mother in law INSISTED they could go on it.
they had just finished watching TV and were getting ready for bed when my husband alerted me to the fact that someone had obviously eaten a baby-bell and than somehow sat on the wax, there is now a VERY noticeable red patch on the sofa.
I have removed the excess wax but there is still a stain.
my boys and mother in law are in bed now but I dont know how to remove it.
me and my husband dont have the money to replace this sofa and my mother in law doesn't really like me as it is.
Does anyone know how to remove cheese wax from a sofa?
Thanks.

Iron and tissue?

Lovemybunnies · 29/12/2023 23:03

Yes I would try an iron and some baking paper but Google it first!

Desecratedcoconut · 29/12/2023 23:03

Is there any wax remaining or is it stained from the colour?

SecondUsername4me · 29/12/2023 23:04

Feign ignorance?

"Ooh, yes I can see a sort of red hue there. Was it there when it was delivered?"

For all you know MIL at a babybel on there.

Codlingmoths · 29/12/2023 23:04

Your husband takes all criticism here, this is totally on your mil of course, but it’s his job to say that.

uclpp · 29/12/2023 23:05

I’d tell her rather than risking further damage. She insisted they use it - and presumably didn’t ask them not to eat on it?

Peekingovertheparapet · 29/12/2023 23:05

You could try a warm iron over some greaseproof paper to try and melt it off.

what is the sofa made of? Could you use something to gently dissolve the wax, eg acetone free nail varnish remover?

or failing that, we had a sofa tht was destroyed by carpenters when only a week old; accidental slash with a Stanley knife. That was fixed by getting hold of some material and reupholstering the damaged part. If it’s a cushion that may not be expensive. You would not know our sofa had been damaged.

SmellyKat10 · 29/12/2023 23:05

Oh godddd I take the wax off them before I give them to my kids because I’ve had this shit mashed into the carpet so many times.

I have no advice but I feel your stress.

Desecratedcoconut · 29/12/2023 23:06

When she said they could sit on the couch, was she expecting that they'd be eating on it?

SmellyKat10 · 29/12/2023 23:06

Can you just turn the cushion over (and leave asap)

cestlavielife · 29/12/2023 23:07

She should have put something on it like a throw before inviting young kids to sit on a brand new white sofa .....

HulahoopsBBQbeef · 29/12/2023 23:08

I wouldn’t do anything to the sofa and just tell her the truth. She may have paid extra for stain proofing especially if it’s that expensive and white. We paid a little extra for five years stain cover and were also given a special cleaning kit too.

jennan · 29/12/2023 23:10

Thanks for such quick reply's, I wasn't expecting that.
A lot of you have said to use a iron and paper so I'm going to try that, hope it works.
My mil has never liked me, she straight up refused to come to me and my husbands wedding, I think we are getting a bit better...
She DID tell the kids not to eat on it but brought them snacks and put it on a small table next to the sofa, she told them to stand up when they were eating it..

Could you turn cushion over? Maybe contact a professional cleaning company to see if they can sort it.

MerryBlueberry · 29/12/2023 23:11

Another vote for turning the cushion over!

Wibblywobblylikejelly · 29/12/2023 23:12

Who gave the children the cheese?
Why are you the one stressing.
It's your husbands mother, his kids and his mother's couch.

Lougle · 29/12/2023 23:14

Her home contents insurance will probably cover it. When I had just moved into our new home, we had cream carpets fitted (naive). A friend visited with her 3 year old, who raided my handbag and drew all over it with blush pink lipstick. My home insurance covered professional cleaning, which thankfully resolved it.

Tryingtokeepcalmandcarryon · 29/12/2023 23:16

Edit - just seen you are going to try the iron trick let us know how it goes!!

Oh god I’m stressed for you!! I wouldn’t put anything else on it or iron it etc you could do more damage (thinking of a poster recently who used a rubber to take a mark off her new worktop and left a huge mark!).

as others said I would try turn the cushion over! Next time I would put a throw on it when they sit on it, my children can get all sorts of things on the sofa, we have throws

jennan · 29/12/2023 23:19

quick update

  • we tried turn over the cushion before trying to iron it but the bottom of the cushion is a dark grey.
  • my husband is just looking for the iron so we will see. Baby-bells are banned until then.. 😂

I’d tell the mil before you try to iron it.

she will feel better if involved, surely? Accidents happen

TyneTeas · 29/12/2023 23:22

I don't think ironing leather will be good for the leather.

I think that suggestion is for fabric

Is it leather? I can’t see where OP has said it is (but I may well have missed it!).

User373533 · 29/12/2023 23:26

Oh god, I wouldn't iron it, what if it burns or melts or spreads the wax?

INeedNewShoes · 29/12/2023 23:27

I wouldn't be taking an iron to it. As we are, a professional upholstery cleaning company may be able to remove the stain. If you burn it with an iron that's irreversible!

PaperDoIIs · 29/12/2023 23:29

Can you swap the cushions over so they're under decorative pillows or end pillows or something ?
