Parking in front of neighbours house

I have a neighbour who has no regard for others. They leave their drive free only to park in front of my house. Any advice

OP posts:

It’s damned annoying, but you should have been prepared for the ‘they’re doing nothing illegal’ replies.
My neighbour’s son parks outside mine all the time, but we park on our drive. Choosing our battles, at least he doesn’t park on the grass verge 🙄

AkitaAtHome · 26/08/2023 16:09

I can't park on my drive anymore as its too hard for me to get out, I have mobility issues so your neighbour might be the same. Get it's frustrating, but I know I'd love to be able to park closer, it's just not feasible.

BonnieLisbon · 26/08/2023 16:16

This is one of those things that might be legal but are still inconsiderate and selfish. A bit like constant bonfires and excessive noise.

blacksax · 26/08/2023 16:23

I too find it annoying when people don't park on their own sodding drive. What the fuck is the point in having a driveway if you aren't going to use it?

And yes I know they can legally park on the road if they want to, but they are just being selfish bastards. Not everyone has the luxury of a drive, and has to park in the street.

DottyLottieLou · 26/08/2023 16:42

Guy across the road has a drive for 2 cars but parks in front of his (own) house. Says he would rather see his own car, when he looks out of his window, than someone else's. May be that's what you should do.

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 11:11

Honestly it wouldn't bother me. If it was me I would have approached my neighbour to ask if it ok to park I would have been ok with that

I agree that it's annoying. I also find it annoying when people visiting houses with drives don't park on the drive! Our neighbour's son visits them and leaves his car in the street when there's room for at least two cars on the drive.

But I don't understand what you're saying here. It reads as if you'd be fine with them parking IF they'd asked you. So why does that make a difference? They've parked in a place you'd have been OK with if they'd knocked and asked. So what's the problem? You want them to ask permission so you can say it's fine? Maybe they're psychic and know you'd say OK. I don't get it, sorry!

LylaLee · 26/08/2023 16:52

I don't park on my drive because to get out I have to reverse into traffic and that's very stressful. I don't want to start every day with stress. And the nature of the road means I can't reverse going in.

We had a mirror. More than one. It keeps getting stolen.

EveSix · 26/08/2023 17:27

My neighbours do this; they've got a drive where they could easily park two cars, but instead they use it to store rubbish and broken furniture. They park on the pavement on the opposite side of the road, forcing my disabled neighbour to walk into the road to get around their cars if he wants to turn right out of his house.
They don't really give a toss.

JLou08 · 26/08/2023 18:13

I'm not sure what planet you are on.
It is not normal to be so wound up about someone parking in front of your house unless it is preventing you from parking your own. I doubt they would care if you parked in front of their house, the majority of people would just get on with their day.

FoodCentre · 26/08/2023 18:18

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 25/08/2023 11:09

Genunine question, why does it bother you?

If they had no drive, or a 2nd car already on the drive would you feel the same about them parking there?

Their single car is taking two spaces.

They park outside OP's. But because they have a drive, they have space reserved outside of their house.

They may have a fair reason, but easy to see how it's annoying.

Yep we’ve a neighbour who does this. It is very annoying as there is room for them to park 3 cars on their property and it makes it difficult (not impossible) to pull out of the drive, but there’s nothing you can say really as it’s perfectly legal. They know they’re being annoying and don’t care, so aren’t likely to care if you raise it. Just park outside theirs or wait for them to leave and take the spot 🤷🏼‍♀️

This. ^ We have a neighbour like this too. Even though she has got a driveway (like we have,) she parks on the road opposite our driveway, and she makes it SO hard for us to reverse in ... We reverse in as it's sooo hard to drive in forward - and even harder to reverse out... especially with someone parked opposite the driveway!!! So if we drove in forward, and had to reverse out, her parking opposite would make life even harder for us.

I don't give a SHIT if it's 'legal' and people are not breaking the law! Only the most rude, inconsiderate, thoughtless, arrogant people park on the road in a residential area when they have got a driveway!!!

Apparently, our neighbour parks on the road a lot as she finds it easier than having to get on and off her driveway! So fuck everyone else then and how hard she's making life for them! Angry

Me and DH have parked OUR car on the road at the bottom of our driveway and opposite hers several times (even though we have a driveway - to try to stop HER doing it...) And yet when she comes back home, she STILL parks on the road virtually opposite. The gap between our cars in SO small that only a fucking Fiat 500 can get through easily. She blocks up the road and DOES NOT GIVE A FUCK! And it is her causing the blockage, as WE were parked there first.

Vans and big cars galore beep their horns as they are struggling to squeeze through, but she has her music so loud in her house that she can't hear them. She doesn't care either as her car is a shitbox so she's not bothered if it's hit! Our car is a good, nice car that we value, so we don't want it hitting, and so we end up bloody moving it back on the driveway! Hmm

I refuse to believe the people who are claiming they wouldn't care if this happened to them on a regular basis. Of course they bloody would! @caterpiller2 YANBU at ALL, but trying to park on the road yourself is probably the only answer. Sadly, even if you say anything, she won't stop, as this type don't. The 'I wouldn't care coz it's a public road' brigade, probably do this themselves! Park where they like, and to hell with everyone else! Angry

It's the height of rudeness, selfishness, and arrogance to keep parking on the road, when you have your own driveway, especially if you are inconveniencing others!!! RUDE RUDE RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a classic case of 'just because you CAN do something, doesn't necessarily mean you SHOULD!'

Spanne · 26/08/2023 19:02

Stop thinking the road directly outside your house belongs to you. Stop spending your evenings checking to see where your neighbours have parked. Stop getting worked up about massively irrelevant things. Makes life much nicer.

fizzwhizz1 · 26/08/2023 20:02

Exactly this is happening currently to me. New nieghbours on a new build housing estate. Have room to park on driveway, but choose to park a massive transit van on the road outside my house. Why is it a problem? Because its so big it blocks out all the evening light into my living room and makes me miserable. There are visitor spaces literally across the street that are always free, but neighbours are so obnoxious and lazy that they insist on parking outside my house. Some good points made by @WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff

Do they rent? Can you report them to the landlord or housing association? Alternatively start proceedings to ask the council to paint double yellow lines. Get in contact with your local counsellor first. Good luck.

2Jays · 26/08/2023 21:04

I'm with you, it would irritate me too. We have a neighbour who parks his camper on his drive and permanently parks his show car in the space next to his drive. He never uses this car and has effectively claimed the space as his. He and his gf have daily use cars as well which they often park in the road. We live in a tourist area and parking is at a premium but these two have absolutely no regard for anyone else.

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 11:19

If you have a drive park on it

Who do you think you are?

RaininSummer · 26/08/2023 23:52

I can't use my car for work so wherever I can park on a Sunday is where it sits for a week. I often can't park outside my own house so nothing I can do about it. Wouldn't dream of knocking to ask if ok as it's a public road.

Zaaarrr · 27/08/2023 07:46

I live on a narrow street with double yellow lines down one side. I could see it was a narrow street when I bought the house. I don't get irritated by the street being narrow or people parking on the street because it's a street, made for vehicles.

fizzwhizz1 · 27/08/2023 18:08

Yes @Zaaarrr that's exactly the point... you bought a house knowing there would be cars parking on the street @caterpiller2 myself and some other posters bought houses where there is adequate parking for ourselves and our neighbours. There should be no need for on street parking - especially no need of on street parking in front of other peoples homes when they could park in front of their own homes!

HateTheView · 28/08/2023 00:28

I think sometimes people park on the street so they can get cheaper car insurance. Apparently, if you say your car is parked on your drive your insurance will be more expensive as the thieves will know which house to steal the keys from. This potentially only applies if you have a car that is one of the most common cars to be stolen and possibly if you lived on a main road with lots of traffic (so more likely to be hit) that could make your insurance premiums by higher.

That's interesting

I always thought it was vice versa as it was safer off the road from being hit

I just think if you live on a narrow street then you need to take the advantages with the disadvantages. EG nobody can drive too fast down the road and it's not used as a short cut because it's narrow.

I've got a nine car drive and all my neighbours have big drives too but you can't make people park on them. Or their visitors. There's often a car opposite my drive so when there isn't I make sure I reverse in.

Bertiesmum3 · 22/09/2023 15:37

My ignorant neighbour has a double drive, they don’t use it, they have put traffic cones outside their house to stop people parking there and they park outside everyone else’s house!!

Why? Why do people do this? I don’t get it.

They are taking up potentially 3 or 5 spaces in total. 2 on the drive, 1 in front of the dropped kerb where no one can park, two on the road where they are parked = 3 spaces taken on the road. OR 1 on the drive, 1 in front of the dropped kerb, 1 on the road = 2 spaces on the road.

Because they’re selfish
