Parking in front of neighbours house

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 10:59

I have a neighbour who has no regard for others. They leave their drive free only to park in front of my house. Any advice

You sound like one

And you sound like a terrible snob. Get over yourself.

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 11:52

Might do that park on the front and when they have parked put my car back on my own drive

The thing is, they obviously think they ‘own’ the space outside her house. You have to speak to them in a language they understand.

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 12:06

I would but I don't like confrontation and it will get petty .

Because their builders and of course they would have something to say what planet do iou live on

God you're really quite horrible.

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 11:56

Guess your a builder then

You're doing yourself no favours. I can't see why them being a builder is relevant.

RudsyFarmer · 25/08/2023 12:10

This is one of those situations where it’s going to depend on the circumstance.

If you live in terraced housing for example and everyone parks on the road as standard then expecting the front of your house to be clear or expecting to be able to park your own car infront of your house would seem unreasonable. BUT if you lived on a new housing development where everyone had space on their driveways for two cars and the house opposite decided to park their van infront of your house, leaving their own house free of the obstruction, well that’s unreasonable isn’t it? Doesn’t matter if it’s lawful or not. It’s provocative and will obviously lead to bad feeling.

knobkopf · 25/08/2023 12:11

What the hell has being builders got to do with the price of fish??

Yeah, I get it's irritating, but they can park there if they want, just as you can park in front of their house if you want.
Maybe they struggle to get the car on their drive and still be able to get out of it...
I have similar here as most of the time I can't park my car in my car port due to how tight the turn is and if my neighbour parks just a few centimetres too far over in her half of the car port, I can't get mine in. I've asked her to make sure she parks further over but most of the time she doesn't. So my car ends up on the road outside. It also ends up on the road if I have things to unload from the back (tiny boot) as I can't get the back doors open and stuff out if it's in the car port.

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 11:47

I guess this hasn't happened to you

Of course it's happened to lots of people. I've got 2 cars parked out the front right now. Neither of them are mine and I don't know who they belong to. Why would I?

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 11:05

There not blocking me in but the housing estate is very narrow why don't they just put there care on the drive or park in front instead of parking over the road opposite in front of mine.

Have you asked them?

jennytheonionslayer · 25/08/2023 12:26

I can get six small or three large cars on my drive, and sometimes I park them on the street because I can.

caterpiller2 · 25/08/2023 12:27

Good for you . You obviously don't have consideration for your neighbours. Are you ware they are probably irritated with you

Honestly it wouldn't bother me. If it was me I would have approached my neighbour to ask if it ok to park I would have been ok with that

Do you own the road in front of your house?

I'm going to guess not - so why does he need your permission?

DinnaeFashYersel · 25/08/2023 12:31

They have every right to park there.

YABU

TheFlis12345 · 25/08/2023 12:35

A guy on our street has a driveway that easily fits his 2 cars side by side but only ever parks one car on it and leaves the other taking up one of the scarce places on the road. Everyone quietly hates him.

GOODCAT · 25/08/2023 12:36

OP it would annoy me too. The only way to prevent it is to get your kerb lowered. I would only park outside a neighbours property if I couldn't park on my own drive or in front of my own. It is purely polite.

It's not your road, so whether you are ok with it is irrelevant - it isn't up to you.

TenderDandelions · 25/08/2023 13:41

Is it legal?

Is it blocking the road for bin lorries/fire engines?

Yes + No to those questions means there's nothing wrong and you can't do anything about it.

Irritating? Maybe. But perfectly allowed.

We had space on our driveway recently, but asked someone to park on the road, because on a previous visit their van leaked oil on to our driveway and it's a bugger to get out of block paving.

Islandgirl68 · 26/08/2023 12:24

Sadly there are selfish, ignorant people like that. Makes no sense to park on the road when they have a drive. You have every right to br annoyed.

Islandgirl68 · 26/08/2023 12:25

We have a neighbour like this.

Warburtons · 26/08/2023 12:27

Yep we’ve a neighbour who does this. It is very annoying as there is room for them to park 3 cars on their property and it makes it difficult (not impossible) to pull out of the drive, but there’s nothing you can say really as it’s perfectly legal. They know they’re being annoying and don’t care, so aren’t likely to care if you raise it. Just park outside theirs or wait for them to leave and take the spot 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hayfeverseasonalready · 25/08/2023 11:21

It's very irritating if someone parks outside your house and you have their vehicle as the scenery. Unfortunately, as I found, there's no law against it. I'm with you in that I would never park directly outside someone's house, unless I'm visiting the person who's house it is.

This seems weird - have you never had to park in a residential street ever in your life?

BCCoach · 26/08/2023 12:36

woodhill · 25/08/2023 11:59

That would irritate me as well

I'd rather have my car in the drive.,less chance of getting hit

I thought insurance preferred cars in drive's overnight

Yeah, you can guarantee a lot of people who leave the car on the road have told insurance that they leave it on the drive. Our old neighbours opposite did this, parked facing the wrong direction on an unlit road, no parking lights (so breaking Highway Code anyway) and the inevitable happened and the car got hit by (presumably) a tractor overnight. Whatever hit it didn’t stop. A mangled mini and no insurance payout.

TheFeistyFeminist · 26/08/2023 12:43

At a previous house we had neighbours who parked out front rather than in the drive that went down the side of their house. Turns out they used to park out of sight and got broken into, so they preferred to have their car where they could see it from their window.
