Dilemma

I recently moved in with my partner - it's his house, and he recently renovated and spent alot on it etc!

Anyway I was cooking the other evening whilst he was out and my saucepan was bubbling up very quickly so moved onto work surface for literally 5 seconds and when I got it off it had burnt the surface. It's only size of a pea if not smaller, but still I feel sick to my stomach about it - I went to garage and got some filler as it's almost a little hole, and it does look better as side is also white, I'm waiting for it to dry the going to file it down flat.

I'm soooo worried about telling him 😣😣😣

Any advice on how I should? I done it yesterday. I put a cleaning spray over it when he got home, I feel like I've ruined his home! It was really a honest mistake.

What's the worktop made from? If it's the plastic coated type, you may be able to use the proper colour coded filler.

@PinkFootstool It looks like marble but it's that sheet stuff that's on top of the surface?

I have filled it - going to file it down and hopefully will look a little better!

I’m a bit more interested in your legal situation as regards accommodation. If you have indeed moved in on the basis that it is ‘his’ house - what safety net do you have if you split up tomorrow? Do you own or rent your own property elsewhere.

(Please don’t tell me he’s so perfect, he’d never see you out on the street - I’ve lived too many decades.)

You should not need to be worried about something like this.
Buy a heat proof mat/slab to have near the cooker.

@TeenDivided Yeah you're right I am probably massively over thinking, I think it's because it's all new I am panicking! I am just having to own up this weekend and tell him otherwise going to carry on being stressed about it!

I’d have left it fessed up and claimed on the insurance. Happened to our last worktop when DH put a frying pan on it.

Maybe he should have mentioned it or showed you worktop savers?
I now have white quartz but never put anything hot on it and have a large worktop saver and some trivets.
Hope it is all ok.

@ZeldaWillTellYourFortune it's because it's not my house, I am this worried, it's the thought of ruining someone's things. It's not the way he will react is worrying me, he will probably be fine but I'm just very angry at myself as I know he spent so much time and money on this house

Its concerning that you are so worried about his reaction and how to tell him about an accident!!!

I would have showed him, and contacted the supplier of the worktop. Depending on the surface, they can colour match it exactly.

@CC4712 I called them they can't do anything. As burnt through - I'd have to replace whole surface, it was just for some advice on how to tell him and some reassurance really but wish I never done a post! You get too many judgmental people!

My partner is lovely and I'm absolutely fine, it's more of a me problem I really work myself up over things like this.

Just be honest with him. 'I'm really sorry 'partners name', I had a small accident cooking. This is what I've done .....'

Buy a wooden or other nice heat pad and leave it over the burnt part. No one will ever see it.

Another way to think about it- if he was in YOUR house and did the same- how would you want HIM to tell you?

@CC4712 yes you're right that's exactly how I'm going to say it. I'm going to look into the wooden heat pad things! It's one of them things ah end of day! Not like I did it on purpose!

@24Dogcuddler it's so small, il show you, but annoyingly right near front of side! Would be fine if it was at back! I've left some filler on it that's why it's raised but hopefully once sanded down when dry it will appear flatter! 🙏🏼

Well, no, I’m not any sort of ‘weirdo’ - but have you ever met a toddler? They destroy everything. Post keys through electrical slots, flush credit cards away, etc, etc.

I’d be incredibly uncomfortable bringing a baby into a situation where I myself felt like a visitor who had to be extra careful of the fixtures and furnishings.
