bbq hulahoops - not so much a craving as the only thing I could reliably eat in the early days

mediagirl · 29/11/2004 19:49

WOW Peckarollover, I am so glad you craved sponges, I thought I was the only one.........I was exactly the same with both DS and DD - DH thought I was barmy, infact he thought I meant sponge cakes at first but when I woke up in the middle of the night demanding a sponge and made him drive to a 24 hr garage for a lovely big yellow car sponge he knew that I was deadly serious...god knows what I was lacking!!

Donbean · 29/11/2004 19:57

Hey Beansmum, it must be a bean thing, me too ice ice ice, had to have it day and night.
Spooky

whizzz · 29/11/2004 19:59

Calipo ice lollies or failing those, ice would have done. LOL at sponges !! How odd

bottle · 29/11/2004 20:01

mrsmiawallace · 29/11/2004 20:05

colditzmum · 29/11/2004 20:08

I loved cheese sandwiches, milk, yoghurt and cornflakes.
I hated the smell of unused teabags. However, I still wanted to drink tea, so I had to make it at arms length!

paolosgirl · 29/11/2004 20:11

I had a craving one night for chips and pickled onions. Dh drove to the chip shop, got home, realised he'd forgotten the onions, drove back to the shop, bought them, got home, dropped them on the pavement, and was so p*ssed off by this point that he gave me them anyway, and didn't tell me til I'd eaten them that they'd been rolling about the gutter

fostermum · 30/11/2004 18:46

dd1, crumpets with green tomatoe pickle and banana on top
dd2 scampi with lots of mayo on
dd3 couldnt keep anything down let alone fancy anything till day of birth

nerdgirl · 30/11/2004 19:11

Ice cream - but not just any ice cream - it had to be a 99!! My poor DH was driven distracted trying to find them for me at the most inopportune times!!

My sister went mad for loop-the-loops (the ice pops with the green stuff at the bottom and the chocolate at the top)

Miaou · 30/11/2004 19:12

Golly after reading some of these mine weren't at all strange!

Dd1 - milk, apples and scrambled eggs
dd2 - didn't really have any
db - raw onion. The fact that I couldn't get enough raw onion was what made me think I was pg!

The big thing I notice is that when I am pregnant I love food, whereas usually I am not interested in it at all. Dh loves cooking for me because I say "Oooh I really fancy x" instead of "whatever you feel like making". Wish it lasted!

lavender2 · 30/11/2004 19:48

Heinz spaghetti hoops
Heinz soups
lots of vegetables (not much fruit as gave me heartburn)

mummytummy · 30/11/2004 19:51

Mine were mainly for smells:

the smell of the vacuum cleaner (we had the cleanest house in the world!!)
the smell of diesel from buses and ice cream vans
the smell of petrol
the smell of wellie boots!

I worked with a girl that liked sucking marigold gloves when she was preggers (how on earth do you discover that craving?!)

redshoes · 30/11/2004 20:16

I have the smell thing too - petrol, creosote, coal tar shampoo...!
Also can't stop eating raw mushrooms...

janeybops · 30/11/2004 20:34

DD it was rice pudding (homemade and full of calories unfortunately - ate one a day!)

DS it was ice cubes. Couldn't get enough of them, ate a pint at a time and broke 3 ice trays in my rush to get them out...

Funnily enough I went right off curry with both of them!

TwoIfBySanta · 30/11/2004 21:26

Tuna and banana mashed on toast, and DH made it for me God love him! (And I was particular to how the toast was made too.)

Later on it was for sausage rolls, not very healthy but I would go to this shop in Edinburgh that makes all these fancy types of sausage so I could have different kinds!!!

Ds twins (nearly 3) love all the things I was addicted to so I'm glad it wasn't anything too weird.

doobydoo · 30/11/2004 21:30

Small bottle of lucozade and four of the ritz cheese sandwich biscuits for breakfast every day. Also disgusting snacks called cheese combos which i consumed by the trough load-i don't think they make em anymore.

Actually that sounds rather tasty and i'm not pregnant....

doobydoo · 30/11/2004 21:33

august24 · 30/11/2004 22:01

When I was pregnant with my first I was living in Japan and I went through phases where I would love certain Japanese food, and then would totally hate it(some of the food there is very soft and slimmy and I would love it and then it would make me sick just thinking about it!)

With my second daughter, when I was living back in the USA, I craved home comfort food like fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy, as I had become a vegetarian I had to get creative, so I made chicken fried Tofu and vegetarian gravy!

Can I just say that craving anything that isn't food is called Pica, this is from this USA site calledbabycenter

Question: What causes pica (cravings for non-food items during pregnancy)?

Answer: No one knows for sure. Some pregnant women develop strong cravings for non-food items such as dirt, ashes, clay, chalk, ice, laundry starch, baking soda, soap, toothpaste, paint chips, plaster, wax, hair, coffee grounds, and even cigarette butts. This common phenomenon is called pica (which is Latin for magpie, a bird that will eat almost anything). In some studies, these bizarre cravings have been linked to an iron deficiency ? even though none of the craved items contains significant amounts of iron.

If you crave any of these items, that doesn't necessarily mean you have any sort of deficiency, and it definitely doesn't mean you should consume them! In fact, eating non-food substances can actually interfere with nutrient absorption and possibly cause a deficiency. And while eating ice is not likely to be harmful (except possibly to your teeth!), eating dirt or most of the other items mentioned can lead to illness, such as lead poisoning or bowel blockage, or in rare cases, even death.

If you are having any strong cravings for non-food items, it's a good idea to talk to your physician or midwife. While this kind of craving is somewhat common among healthy pregnant women, it's worth getting checked for any underlying physical or psychological problem. And just talking with your practitioner about these feelings may help you deal with them in a healthy way.

warmmum · 30/11/2004 22:04

Green thai chicken curry - dh made me cry when pg with dd1 because he said all we had to eat was fishfingers (boo hoo!). And about 5/6 oranges a day.

moomina · 30/11/2004 22:10

Sour sweets (any excuse!) It got pretty bad - coming home from work once I had to do a massive detour to the only place I knew for sure would be selling them - the kiosk at Liverpool Street station. When I got there they were just closing - cue the sight of a sweating, tearful, heavily pregnant woman pleading with bemused stallholder for a bag of cola bottles!

Also Pret a Manger tuna nicoise salad - inconvenient considering tuna is a bit of a no-no...

fairydust · 30/11/2004 22:13

milk drank up to 8 pints a day

hunkermunker · 30/11/2004 22:13

Orange juice and NOTHING sweet for the first 12 weeks. Even the word biscuit made me retch!
