Has anyone noticed that labouring women in Holby never have epidurals? They either pant away manfully or are given super-emergency c-sections.

No particular axe to grind, I just thought this the other day while watching it!

i agree also have you noticed how the midwives/nurses etc seem to spend a lot of the time just talking and helping them with their problems.

Scatterbrain · 24/10/2002 12:16

Yeah - and they're all gorgeous !!

karenanne · 24/10/2002 12:29

ooh yeah i totally agree!!!

Harrysmum · 24/10/2002 12:32

And the fact that it's v often the registrar if not the consultant who is wandering around, at a loose end, ready to do any deliveries they take a notion to...

And that the new mothers are instantly pain-free and compos mentis the second the baby pops out...

And that the lady with hyperemisis a few weeks ago was sick once but only in the most discreet way and it was cured by evening time...

I wish!!!!

emmabee · 24/10/2002 12:47

& because they ALWAYS have a close relative at death's door on the surgical ward, they gad about the hospital like nobody's business seconds after giving birth - or in some cases, after a ceasarian!

I love it though!

The woman in this weeks episode who was having the baby for her brother & his male partner was able to walk and sit on her bed without the faintest hint of discomfort!!

jac · 24/10/2002 13:25

I do think the special effects are quite good though. One woman gave birth standing up and it looked quite authentic I thought!!

Ems · 24/10/2002 18:02

Great a Holby city thread, have been away for a few days and my recording didnt work!!

Can anyone fill me in on any story line developments (I am a complete addict!) Thanks.

CP · 24/10/2002 18:13

Ems, I think it is repeated later on during the week if you have digital tv, it is on BBC choice as far as I know. Anyway - agree completely with the labour on all tv programmes, my dd was born on the same day as Lou in Eastenders and I was hanging onto the radiator in pain all through Lisa's incredibly quick and seemingly pain free labour, I threw up when hers ended at 20h00 and promptly demanded to go to hospital.

Scatterbrain · 24/10/2002 19:18

OOH how exciting - a soapie thread !!

Holby City this week - Jess (Rick's daughter) is running to work and witnesses a car-jacking of an elderly chap's car - she intervenes and lashes out at one of the car-jackers, cutting his nose pretty badly. Gets an ambulance and takes him to hospital. Meanwhile Chrissie is a few days late and worries that he precancerous cells are to blame, Owen is visibly excited at the possible prospect of pregnancy but Chrissie dashes his hopes saying that she never wants kids (and who can blame her frankly !!).
Elsewhere, Diane has been invited to a party at Campbell-Gore's gaff but doesn't invite Danny as he is not a doctor - alleging that he'll be bored. He however finds out that his fellow non-doctor Chrissie is in fact going along as Owen's partner and is none too pleased. Eventually Diane relents and says he can come - but she tells him what to wear !
Back at the hospital, Steve's wayward son is admitted suffering from a rather nasty gash to the nose - of course Jess recognises him and tells him that if he won't confess to his Dad she will tell him herself. So he eventually admits the crime, in his usual way - saying it wasn't him, his friends made him do it etc.. Steve majes him apologise to the old chap, who gallantly decided not to press charges. Also at the hospital, Rick and the doctor who looks like a boxer, perform a stomach stapling operation on a very large lady with a strange husband who dyes his hair an unattractive red colour. Campbell-Gore disapproves of the surgery but has to intervene later when the woman collapses and needs emergency surgery. Back in maternity a 23 year old girl comes in in labour and gives birth to a baby for her brother and his gay lover, all are delighted until she collapses too and has to have an emergency hysterectomy - the brother decides that she should have the baby back, but his oartner is less happy, but I think they were all going to collaborate.
Later, at the party, Chrissie is getting noisily slaughtered much to Owen's dismay. Diane is trying to keep Danny out of things and Jan tells someone that her relationship with Charlie Fairhead was over months ago ! (not sure Casualty knows that yet though !) Chrissie then goes to the loo and gets her period, and is pretty nasty to Owen about the whole thing, then I think she was sick in public ! Danny gets fed up and storms off home, where he and Lisa soon get vigorously jiggy with it !

Oh and Rick applies for the clinical director's post - in competition with Campbell-Gore.

I think that's all !! HTH !

anais · 24/10/2002 21:53

Wow, Scatterbrain you really are a fan! Hope you were all paying attention, she'll be asking questions later!

What annoys me is that no-one EVER just comes in, has a straightforward birth and then goes home. Oooh no, they all have to have a crisis. Though, I guess it wouldn't be very interesting otherwise....although, having said that...it's just getting soooo far-fetched now.

Oh, and have you ever known a hospital where everyone has so much spare time????

tracyhay · 24/10/2002 22:12

They do quite often get things wrong in holby. On a message board i frequent for midwives and those interested in maternity care they regularly slag it off. I was particularly cross when they portrayed a woman with hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness) as perky and capable of sitting up and arguing! Far from reality! I was bedridden for 2 months, dehydrated. lost a stone and felt like i was dying! It would be nice too if baby was put straight to the breast to encourage bfing! I never miss it though much to dp's despair!

emmabee · 25/10/2002 10:33

Dh is so squeamish I'm not actually allowed to watch it when he's there - especially as we're usually having supper at the time! Ditto Casualty.

Ems · 25/10/2002 16:27

Scatterbrain, you are an absolute star, thankyou thankyou!!!

So were Danny and Lisa actually snogging?! Ive been waiting for that partnership to happen!!!

emmabee · 25/10/2002 16:31

Will Danny please do something with his hair! he looks so ridiculous - or am I just getting old?

& do you think (oh, I've forgotten the character's name: Danny's ex, surgeon) will now get off with Ed?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 25/10/2002 16:37

Snogging? They were ripping each other's clothes off if I remember!

karenanne · 25/10/2002 16:46

eddie and chrissie apparently get it on soon, probably next week i think and its said to be VERY raunchy.
i'll def be watching that one!!!!!

emmabee · 25/10/2002 16:50

Oh yes! I'd forgotten the appraising looks she kept giving him. Though why anyone would dump Owen for him is beyond me.

OP posts:
karenanne · 25/10/2002 16:51

Which one's Eddie?

Scatterbrain · 28/10/2002 19:26

Eddie must be the one with the boxer's nose ! I hear that he and Chrissie do get it on in a broom-cupboard after her public vomiting ends ! Let's hope she cleaned her teeth first then - EUGHHHH !!!

Eddie is cute in an ugly kinda way - bit like a boxer dog I suppose !! (no pun intended !)

What's wrong with Danny's hair - oh yeah - just remembered the odd dyed bit - very David Beckham - very YUCK !

Oh and yes - Danny and Lisa were way way past snogging - it was rumpy-pumpy city all right !

I'm so glad the site is back - I was SO missing it !!!

bluesky · 05/04/2004 00:04

Hi, need to revise this thread this eve, as the phone rang during Cath and wotsername having their emotional heart to heart, WHAT HAPPENED?!

Thankyou!

PS: Is something awful going to happen to Jess because of her new fella?

mez75 · 05/04/2004 00:11

Cath confesed to helping her father on his way! She said he had asked her to do it but she didn't have the guts (something like that hope that made sense)

stupidgirl · 05/04/2004 00:21

Ooh, yeah. Jess's fella was helping himself to something out of her bag last week, wasn't he???

(I don't watch this, honest!)
