How much do you drink?

Had a chat with a lady at work today who was saying she thought she had a drink problem so I responded with the quantity that I drunk over the weekend and it shocked me when I added it up. I had a bottle of red on Fri, 3 bottles out with a friend on Sat (1 and half each) and a bottle last night. It just reminded me because sitting here I thought, I'd love a glass of wine, and under normal circumstances I'm sure I'd have had another bottle tonight. I don't get drunk on a bottle though and I never get hangovers now matter how much I drink. I will be cutting down drastically between now and the Xmas do's. I just wondered how much do others drink on average?

a couple of glasses a night with the occasional night off

mummytummy · 15/11/2004 19:36

I'm such a lightweight when it comes to drinking, its embarrassing. Last time I drank, I had four glasses of wine and threw up in the door well of my friends car! I probably now only drink two glasses of wine a month - how sad is that!!

vict17 · 15/11/2004 19:36

but sometimes go out once a week when I drink more than that!

WigWamBam · 15/11/2004 19:37

I'm at risk of being called a boring old fart here ... but I don't drink at all.

NomDePlume · 15/11/2004 19:39

I get stinking hangovers, so can can very comfortably go a fortnight without so much of a sniff of wine or other alcohol. My DH drinks more than I do, which isn't difficult ! He has 1 1/2 bottles each on a Fri, Sat & Sun. He does become very 'bickery' and irritating when he's had one too many though

whizzz · 15/11/2004 19:40

Me & DH will share a bottle of wine Friday night, same again Saturday. We sometimes will open a bottle in the week & maybe just have a glass each - but I have to admit, we try not to. Having said that there were some dregs left over from the weekend - so I have a glass of red here at the moment !

emmatmg · 15/11/2004 19:40

WWB, you and me both.

secretly · 15/11/2004 19:41

Boo hoo, you mums are not making me feel any better - oh well it re-inforces my belief that I have been drinking far too much.

I don't tend to drink at home, only when I am out, which is usually about once every 4-6 weeks. Having said that, I have been out for a drink on friday saturday and sunday night so far, but that is very unusual .

codswallop · 15/11/2004 19:44

woudl say a bottel in a sitting at home is a lot fro one person
maybe a once in a while blow out it's ok although I wodul chunder I think
I think drinking goes in phases though

secretly · 15/11/2004 19:46

Codswallop - a lot of typos there - are you drunk?? (Only joking )

secretly, hate to say it, but you are drinking a huge amount, way too much. A bottle of wine , say 14% is about 10 units of alcohol. The max. recommended amount per day for women is 2 -3 and you shouldn't drink alcohol 2 days in a row. the senario you describe has you drinking nearly 37 units in just 3 days. And that's with no hangover!!!!!!!!

I have to say, until very ecently I was getting concerned about my consumtion - I'd share a bottle with dh per night & while occasionally he'd want a night off, I never would. Then we'd get to the point we'd open a 2nd bottle (but not finish it). Gradually it was inching up.
The only reason I've stopped is that I'm ttc. i seriously think once I've had baby, & finished b'ding, I 'm gonna have to abstain, cos it's all too easy to creep up 7 up.

I'm not saying this to make you feel bad, but it took someone spelling it out (ie 60 units of alcohol per week on a recent thread & that was a bloke) & everyone seemed shocked about how much it was & I was thinking it wasn't that long ago I had a heavy week that wasn't too far behind...

Secretly, it is too much, by a long way. please grit your teeth & try to give up. you could try my method. ttc is the only way for me

MummyToSteven · 15/11/2004 21:12

depends if i have friends staying the weekend/am staying with friends.

if "socialising" in this way, might have 6-9 units per night both nights, nothing the rest of the week

if not usually have between 0 and 4 units per week, and many weeks i would say i have no units at all.

secretly have to say i agree with the others than your alcohol intake seems to be a bit on high side; i don't think whether you get drunk or hungover is relevant tbh - the alcohol will still affect your energy levels/state of mind/liver regardless of how much tolerance you have built up. how many bottles of wine do you drink in a typical week - was this weekend a particularly heavy one, or quite usual for you?

hunkermunker · 15/11/2004 21:16

DH poured me a glass of wine the other night and I drank some, then said I felt odd and better not have more. In unison, we looked at the glass and there was barely an inch gone. I truly am pathetic when it comes to alcohol!

I don't really like the taste of alcohol (I have the tastebuds of an eight-year-old...!), so I don't tend to drink. Plus the obvious lightweight factor comes into it - I could drink more when I was 16 than I can now - now I have trouble seeing after a glass of wine...

forget that for a laugh, a glass of red (or 2 sometimes 3) is lovely all those antitoxidants!!! little and often is good for the heart, blood steam etc I would be concerned if it was 2/3 bottles a night with never a break and solo!!

secretly · 15/11/2004 21:24

Absolutley no offence taken from anyone , I have been drinking far too much and it has crept slowly upwithout me really realising it. Tonight I've had nothing but tea, not missed it at all. I really think its more habit. Dp comes in and opens a bottle for me when he has a lager. I've told him not too, I don't open it myself. I shall be very good up until about 18th December then I shall partake again.

MummyToSteven · 15/11/2004 21:25

sounds like a bit of a habit change needed then - either DP giving up the lager or just getting you a small drink (of alcoholic or non-alcoholic) variety rather than a bottle of wine!

blueteddy · 15/11/2004 21:30

Well I drink lots 2!
I have a couple of alcaholic drinks most evenings (when I say a couple I mean 3 or 4 glasses of either wine or bacardi!)
I know lots of my friends that have kids do the same, as it is a way of winding down at the end of a stressfull day!
I am sure I drink 2 much, but I feel in need of a drink once the kids r in bed!
Btw, when I decide 2 be healthy I just switch 2 red wine as it is good 4 my heart!!!!

blueteddy · 15/11/2004 21:35

18th of December!!!!
You have far more will power than me!!
I'm gonna try 2 have 3 nights off, while dh is on nights!
I have not had any tonight (but had an unbelievable amount yesterday!) & am gonna make myself an ovaltine in a minute.
I go from 1 extreme 2 the other!!!!

ernest · 16/11/2004 08:49

mummytosteven, it is relevant that she doens't have hangovers/feel very drunk, cas it shows how resistant she is to alcohol, therefore needing more & more to get the same feeling. Someone who can drink say a bottle with no hangover can easily be led down the bottle & a half path...... and no hangover means more likely to drink the following day, so 2 heavy nights in a row, or 3 or 4. Not having a go or anything, just explaining why I mentioned that having no hangover is a bad sign.

secretly, well done to you for abstaining. you're right, it is habit (well, was for me), so I guess a few days retraining.. they say it takes 21 days of constant repetition for a new habit to develop, so hope you have loits of camomile tea in the house! good luck

Ameriscot2004 · 16/11/2004 08:55

We (DH and I, and the occasional glass to the au pair) go through about a case of wine a week. Trying to cut back though.

Demented · 16/11/2004 09:18

DH and I share a bottle of wine once, usually twice a week. If I go out (very rarely) I tend to go over the top though , must stop that.

Used to drink more regularly when DS2 was smaller, a glass of red wine almost every night of the week was normal then.

beansmum · 16/11/2004 09:25

before I had bean I went out 3-4 times a week and drank probably 5 pints plus a couple of vodkas each night. And on the days I stayed in I usually drank something, a glass or two of wine or a couple of beers.

Now haven't had a drink for over a year, didn't drink at all when I was pg and am still breastfeeding. Maybe i'll have a drink at xmas

marthamoo · 16/11/2004 09:37

Before I started doing WeightWatchers I definitely drank too much. Dh and I were doing well if we had two booze free nights a week - would share a bottle of wine most nights, and generally get onto a second bottle at the weekends. I've virtually given up red wine now and don't drink from one week to the next: downside is that I am now p*ssed as a fart after two glasses of wine and get a stinking hangover!

The benefits have been threefold - lost weight for starters, no longer feel so muzzy headed in the mornings, and our grocery bills have reduced dramatically!
