HI

I got caught in a 3 hour jam a couple of days and it has made me think about an emergency bag for the car. I already have a first aid kit and warm clothes. I always take food out with me and there are toys in the car.

Any thoughts other than water, torch, blanket, change of clothes for dd....

there was a really funny thread about a poster stuck for hours in a traffic jam - she needed a wee, so used her child's nappy.

just a thought

I think that you have the basics covered

mumofmonSTARsOfBethlehem · 12/12/2007 11:15

you have more than we do...we have a blanket and some paracetamol

TBH whenever we are in teh car there is a bag for the boys with toys and snacks in and we don't store nappies in the car now as DS2 is potty trained but we do - somewhere- have the porta-potty thingy

cadeLaideInAManger · 12/12/2007 11:17

god, you're all so organised.

mylittleponey · 12/12/2007 11:17

have nappies & snacks

NutterlyUts · 12/12/2007 11:21

Ooo I never thought of one of these. Off to concoct one now

PestohohohoMonster · 12/12/2007 11:22

We have an old icecream tub with a lid in case anyone feels a bit, ahem, green...

mylittleponey · 12/12/2007 11:26

I'm taking two lunchboxes for my kids to throw up in plus towels everywhere when have to go & pick up the others!!

cadeLaideInAManger · 12/12/2007 11:35

friend broke down on motorway recently, waited 3 hours for AA, if she hadn't had blankets her dcs would've had hypothermia.

BibiJesus · 12/12/2007 11:41

Our car is already packed to the rafters, but will be making up an emergency pack this afternoon! Where do you find room for warm clothes and blankets and nappies though?

We already have 3 car seats in the car, then in the boot: a double buggy, umbrellas, rain cover (for buggy), 2x baby slings, pac a macs and anything else we need on the day.

May be getting a roof box

AMumInScotland · 12/12/2007 12:28

I have a bag with mars bars, bottles of water, fleece blanket, torch & extra batteries, tow rope and folding snow shovel.

We got stuck in a snowy ditch once, and would have got out a lot quicker if we'd had the tow rope then, as some nice people with a landrover did their best with a ratty old bit of rope they had, but to no avail...

I've seen suggestions of warm hats and gloves too, as that's where you lose most heat. If space is a problem, you can get foil survival bags from outdoor shops which pack up very small but are more effective than a blanket (though less comforting...)

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 12/12/2007 12:35

Sickbags.
Potty.

And I keep meaning to get myself one of these.

We also have torch, fire extinguisher, towrope, 1st aid kit, blankets, sheet (for picnic rug or spread over carseats when we leave the car in the sun), bottle of water, plastic cutlery, ball, sundry little toys.

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 12/12/2007 12:54

I've got a curly wurly in the glove box, does that count?

crokky · 12/12/2007 12:58

I carry oil in my car and I have nappies and wipes for DS. That is it - I will have to get more organised!

cadeLaideInAManger · 12/12/2007 12:58

Maureen.......

cadeLaideInAManger · 12/12/2007 12:58

I have make-up in the glove box, so I will at least look my best!

claricebeansmum · 12/12/2007 13:04

We have nothing in our car...not even a grubby Fox's Glacier Mint

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 12/12/2007 13:05

Actually, when I think about it, I ate it about 3 weeks ago, when I was stuck in the car park waiting for dh to bring me petrol for my car!

Quadrophenia · 12/12/2007 13:07

we have a kettle, cooker, baked beans, other tinned items, tea, coffee, coffee mate, cards, dominos, blankets and loads of torches, oh and a first aid kit!

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 12/12/2007 13:08

Ah but, have you got water to make tea and a tin opener to open the beans? Do you have a camper van or something?

claricebeansmum · 12/12/2007 13:09

Where do you live Quad? Surely not SW London like me

pania · 12/12/2007 13:21

Hmm.. what is the capacity of a nappy I wonder? Would it hold an adult-size wee?

Quadrophenia · 12/12/2007 13:30

I live in Northampton

claricebeansmumhasnomincepies · 12/12/2007 13:30

But doesn't it take up quite a bit of your boot?

Quadrophenia · 12/12/2007 13:32

aha you see, we drive a vw campervan come rain or shine and just haven't got round to unpacking it from summer!! We need thesae things more than most as we get stuck alot

ChubbyStuckForAFestiveNameBurd · 12/12/2007 13:35

Tow rope, shovel, Murray mints.

I'd say blanket but there's an old duvet in the boot for the dogs, that'd do.
