Are taking drugs and being a good parent mutually exclusive then?

I don't want to get told off lots or start a fight, its just that I (along with most of my friends - parents or not) will take drugs every now and then, but I am aware that the people I know are not necessarily representative of what's really normal or acceptable - so what does everyone really think?

Naaaaah. You end up obsessing over whether to have saucepans in size order or by colour.

Then you realise you have a novel in you & wander off to write 14 pages of illegible drivel. In longhand. Next day dh falls over the saucepans, rolls eyes & says 'I see Billy's been round...'

Magdelanian · 06/12/2007 23:12

Yes lol at cleaning out the kitchen cupboards whilst speeding .

Magdelanian · 06/12/2007 23:17

Good post Depraved. You are speaking from sensible experience. I have never had coke but people who I occasionally socialise with are on it and its as I suspect fine, in that they appear still together as opposed to the drinkers getting visably drunk and incapable.

Saying that I will not be taking it up.

ladylush · 06/12/2007 23:20

pmsl at your last line M (no pun intended)

vacua · 06/12/2007 23:21

lithium doesn't cause alopecia (does it?) valproate does sometimes

I am about 25 000 pages late with this

Magdelanian · 06/12/2007 23:21

Sorry should have added that the part of your post that I'm slightly about is the sex. The best sex IMO is had when perfectly sober.

ladylush · 06/12/2007 23:23

yes V it can - I know someone who lost her hair after being on lithium (the levels were obviously not being sufficiently monitored).

vacua · 06/12/2007 23:23

have only ever heard of that happening with valproate (depakote - could your friend have been on that too? they are prescribed together sometimes) but lithium can bring whole host of unpleasant effects like acne, psoriasis, gaining 12 stones a week despite feeling too sick to eat anything, tremors and so on

Magdelanian · 06/12/2007 23:26

That's the truth speed=appetite suppressant. I lived in South Africa and we used to buy OTC diet aids which contained speed. Illegal here.

Anyway nictoine is an appetite suppressant also and I've given that up and not balloo
ned yet!

ladylush · 06/12/2007 23:27

No she was only on lithium at the time. She wasn't a friend (someone I met via work) and it happened about 40 years ago.

ladylush · 06/12/2007 23:28

Long before I met her - I'm 35!

Have decided I can't afford to get weirder so I'll have to put my trust in Thyroxine.

ladylush · 06/12/2007 23:32

some viciousness wouldn't go amiss though

Mincepiedermama · 06/12/2007 23:34

Speedyqueen I rarely did speed but I remember on the few occasions I did my house was as clean as a whistle.

I listened to hardcore and very fast trance music while I sped around polishing and organising. It was fab.

"No one has said that occasional use is an automatic route anywhere"

Sorry, can't remember whose that quote is, but I have to disagree and say that actually many people on this thread have said that.

Everyone seems to think I am sat around naked with men licking pills out of my belly button, whilst I snort lines of coke off a copy of The Gruffalo, whilst DD runs around giggling cos she's found the pills I left on the floor.

The truth is rather more boring.

And whats this bolleaux about leaving drugs where kids can get at them? That would be insanely stupid and dangerous - even (possibly especially?) hardened addicts do not leave their stash where the kids can find it. FFS, do any of you leave the paracetamol lying down the back of the sofa??
