i keep some in the fridge and some out. I fill up the fruit bowl, then any extra goes in the fridge. The only fruit I don't ever keep out of the fridge is grapes.

collision · 09/11/2004 19:31

Most fruit I keep in the fridge as it tastes better IMO but bananas I keep on the side in a bowl with oranges and tangerines etc

BadHair · 09/11/2004 19:32

Grapes in fridge, apples, pears, oranges and narnas in bowl on table so dses can stuff themselves.

PicadillyCircus · 09/11/2004 19:32

Boring threads generally aren't

Our fruit lives in the fruit bowl. (So do lots of other things, but that's a different thing really)

lou33 · 09/11/2004 19:32

I put half my bananas in the fridge, they keep longer

vict17 · 09/11/2004 19:33

We're the same as PiccadilyCircus - fruit in fruit bowl along with receipts, letters, keys and glasses. Only fruit that goes in fridge is in summer all the berry type fruits

lavender2 · 09/11/2004 19:33

lol ....nearly all our fruit is in the salad drawers of the fridge....bananas on the work surface and cooking apples in the garage...sometimes potatoes and carrots too at this time of year as it's so cold at night in there..

Bozza · 09/11/2004 19:34

In the fruit bowl except for strawberries, raspberries etc. Sometimes put bananas in a separate bowl because of their ripening properties. To be even more pedantic I keep the fruit bowl on the hall because the kitchen and dining room are both south facing with big windows and in the summer the fruit does not keep

Roobie · 09/11/2004 19:35

So do bananas last longer if kept in the fridge then? I've never tried (usually because the fridge is choc a bloc after the shopping delivery) and am usually left with nasty black fertilising smelling bananas after a few days.

lou33 · 09/11/2004 19:35

i keep most of my veg in the fridge too, apart from potatoes and onions

lou33 · 09/11/2004 19:36

yes they do, especially if you put the green ones in

vict17 · 09/11/2004 19:37

me too lou - all veg in fridge except potatoes and onions

Twiglett · 09/11/2004 19:38

you see mushrooms aren't in the Ocado fridge bag ... they're in the cupboard bag

am feeling like I've been getting it wrong all these years

OP posts:
lou33 · 09/11/2004 19:38

i put mushrooms in the fridge.

vict17 · 09/11/2004 19:39

mushrooms definitely in a paper bag (never plastic as they go all manky) in the fridge.

Bozza · 09/11/2004 19:54

All veg (inc onions & mushrooms but not potatoes) in fridge.

SoupDragon · 09/11/2004 19:55

I always thought you couldn't put bananas in the fridge because they'd go black. Like they do in the freezer.

Hulababy · 09/11/2004 19:55

Most fruit I put in a fruit bowl on the dinner table. Veggies go in the fridge, as I have no other space for it elsewhere.

lou33 · 09/11/2004 19:59

mine dont go black unless they touch the back of the fridge itself.

lydialemon · 09/11/2004 20:02

Grapes and strawberries in the fridge, along with excess clementines/satusmas, apples and pears - we have a fruit bowl in the living room on the dining table, it's the only thing the kids can eat without asking first. Bananas sit on top of the microwave (which is on top of the fridge!) I like putting fridge fruit in their packed lunches as it keeps everything cold (I freeze their yogurts too)

Salad stuff/mushrooms/avacados go in the fridge, every other vegetable goes in the larder until it goes mouldy! I should just stick to the frozen stuff.

Wallace · 09/11/2004 20:05

So you can put bananas in the fridge then? I make ds' pack lunch the nigh before and put it in the fridge, and then have to remember to add the banana in the morning - for some reason I thought you couldn't put them in the fridge...

paolosgirl · 09/11/2004 20:09

It's amazing what you learn on MN - I always thought bananas went black in the fridge...

lou33 · 09/11/2004 20:16

honestly i do it all the time.

And if you only use half a banana, and want to keep it, pop it back in the fridge in it's skin, it keeps for a few more days.

pixiefish · 09/11/2004 20:32

fruit bowl apart for summer fruits which live in the fridge. Potatoes etc in the veg drawer, mushrooms in the fridge.

BUT dh thinks me quite odd int hat I keep all jams, marmalades etc in the fridge as well (as do my parents and brother

Wallace · 09/11/2004 20:40

WOW my life will now be that bit easier - no more needing to remember to add the banana to the pack lunch in the morning

I keep jam in the fridge too
