Anyone ordered anything from Amazon recently?

I ordered some stuff yesterday, apparently without problems. Got a confirmation email to say the order had been processed and that the estimated date of despatch would be 24 December to 7 January !!

WTF?

Why did I not know this as I placed the order? It said nothing about the items not being in stock or anything and as these were supposed to be christmas presents, I am mightily peeved. Anyone else had this, or know what it's about?

I ordered BIL a book for his birthday last Feb and it still hasn't arrived dispite being "in stock" when I ordered it!! Just leaving it ongoing now to see how long it does eventually take!

goingfor3 · 21/11/2007 09:59

We had to wait about 6 weeks for an instock item to be delivered when we ordered in June. I haven't ordered anything since.

Sherbert37 · 21/11/2007 10:01

Got my Wii within a couple of days and was very relieved.

Sonnet · 21/11/2007 10:03

I ordered on Monday and received it yesterday.....

Sometimes when you look closely you can see that a product is in stock but will take 4 weeks for delivery for whatever reason - if you have then ticked the option to combine into 1 delivery ( or not ticked the box for "send me my items as they become available - I forget which) it will hold the whole order up....

Hope you get it sorted

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 21/11/2007 10:10

What I am most annoyed about is that none of the things I have ordered are particularly special - I could get them from the high street, but as I always have DD with me when shopping I thought I would order them online and hide them without her seeing them.

Am V V at the moment

I had the same problem in the summer. Ordered something that was "in stock" for dh's birthday (in September) in June and ended up getting it in the middle of September. They gave me the usual BS about having supply problems. Have also just placed another order which was sent on 13 Nov and due to be here on 15 Nov and still hasn't arrived. They say they're having problems with deliveries at the moment though they didn't say exactly what. Have to say I used to think Amazon was great, really efficient, stuff always came when they said it would. Used to be my favourite on-line retailer. Not anymore! As your order is Christmas presents I'd cancel it if you can and get the stuff from elsewhere. Perhaps they'll improve when they realise they're losing customers.

LedodgyDickinson · 21/11/2007 10:14

I must have been lucky. I've ordered loads off there recently and all has come quickly and correctly.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 21/11/2007 10:14

Is it easy enough to cancel the order when it's already been paid for?

kindersurprise · 21/11/2007 10:15

I ordered presents for the DCs last Tuesday, one lot arrived on Wednesday, the rest on Thursday. That was ordering from Amazon.co.uk for delivery to Germany

Have never had problems with delivery with Amazon.

MuffinMclay · 21/11/2007 10:21

I've found that if I order and have things sent to my home address they take forever, the upper end of their estimated delivery times. But if I have them sent to dh's work address (central London) they are usually despatched straight away and arrive within 48 hours, regardless of the lengthy delivery times suggested, even with supersaver delivery.

Given up having anything sent to the home address now.

Wheelybug · 21/11/2007 10:22

GOH - yes you can cancel if you've paid - you go into my orders (I think its called) and its should be in there and you can just cancel it.

Hmmm... I have a basket I am adding to as I think of things - think I'd better but it all soon...

NomDePlume · 21/11/2007 10:32

I ordered DH's birthday presents (bday end of this month) at the beginning of Nov thinking I might be in for a long wait. I only paid for the standard delivery service and the first part of the present (the main bit) came the next day . The second bit came 3 days later.

I was impressed. I see lots of cxomplaints re Amazon on here, but I have never had a probelm with them.

tiredemma · 21/11/2007 10:33

yes, I ordered some stuff on sunday, it arrived yesterday.

v.impressed

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 21/11/2007 10:38

I have always been impressed with Amazon and have been a very satisfied customer for years. This has taken me by surprise because there was no indication at the time of ordering that I would have to wait this long. Two years ago I ordered DD1's ipod through Amazon, and was warned of the delay for delivery (high demand, etc). I was really impressed to get it well ahead of the estimated date of delivery (I think it came about 2 weeks earlier than they said it would) and so had it well in time for christmas. Maybe that will happen here, but I am not happy that no delay was intimated when I ordered, or I wouldn't have bothered.

I ordered something 3 weeks ago, and last week it was showing as estimated dispatch date 3rd December-8th Jan! It arrived today...

I also ordered 12 things from Amazon on Monday - most came today and all have now been dispatched.

So hopefully no reason for you to worry, but it's not knowing that's worse isn't it.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 22/11/2007 09:20

Thanks for telling me your experience, Portonovo. It prompted me to check the 'where's my stuff' option on the email I received yesterday, and now the despatch date for 2 of the items is within the next week, so it has been changed overnight. Keeping fingers crossed that it all comes soon.

Ordered some stuff recently, used the free SuperSaver delivery, supposed to be 3-5 days from dispatch. Was dispatched on 15th but still no sign, so I emailed them yesterday afternoon whinging and asking where stuff was.

Apparently there is a backlog at the moment which means a 2-3 day delay. Why they couldn't tell me that in the first place I have no idea. I also don't understand how a backlog can affect stuff that has already been dispatched. If it has left the warehouse already, unless the warehouse is in Siberia and it's travelling by donkey I don't really see why it's not made it's way to me by now. It's not like I live in the Outer Hebrides or something.

Arrrrggghh!

FuriousGeorge · 22/11/2007 23:15

Yes,ordered a DVD on 12th despatch date 13th,actually arrived on the 19th.

CaptainUnderpants · 22/11/2007 23:24

flowery , that must be my problem - has been dispatched, should have arrived Monday - still no sign. Was strarting to get a bit concerned as have always found Amazon to be pretty good .

DaisyNightingale · 22/11/2007 23:35

This is so not the thread I need to see after having placed a huge book order with them.

It said estimated date of dispatch would be 10-13 December on the amazon items and that the oither items would be here by 24 December. I've not had my confirmation e-mail yet.

I think it should be easy enough to cancel as they don't normally charge your card until the items are ready to dispatch. If they are sticky about this, speak to your card company.

I haven't used them for ages, and was amazed at just how much stuff is on there now; maybe they are getting too big for their boots?

lemonaid · 22/11/2007 23:43

I signed up for the Amazon Prime thingy (added up how many orders I place in a year and it seemed worth it) and so far everything has indeed turned up the next day with no delivery chsrge.

handlemecarefully · 22/11/2007 23:45

I've never had any problems with Amazon

However I have done a lot of online ordering with various different companies recently and experienced quite a few issues. It's the Christmas rush (in November!)

fortyplus · 22/11/2007 23:47

GrumpyOldHorsewoman - you'll probably find that one item is out of stock till then. You can cancel that item and the rest will come straight away. I've used Amazon a few times and they've always been very good.

HappyMummyOfOne · 23/11/2007 09:35

I use amazon every month and have never had any problems - only use actual amazon rather than the third party sellers though. It usually gives the stock status on the item page and has rarely been wrong.

Check your account, like fortyplus said its probably one item out of stock thats holding up the rest. They dont debit your card until it enters despatch so easy to cancel either the one item or the whole order.

With free delivery, the courier gets 3-5 days to deliver once they have the parcel off Amazon. Obviously this is cheaper than next day hence the free delivery option.

Glad somebody has used the new prime service, its worth my while signing up to that and I will now that I know it works fine.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 23/11/2007 11:48

YIPPEE!!!!!

Have had emails saying 2 of my 3 things have been despatched! The other they have given as being despatched by 28 Nov.

Why, oh why, did they give me heart failure in the first instance? I suppose they have got to offer a worst case scenario to cover themselves, and I am delighted I will get the stuff before christmas, but every time I check the details they are different. Seems a bit mad.

Still, just glad my christmas presents will arrive long before christmas.
