If you were a single parent with three kids but no family to go and visit or to invite over.
Any ideas on a great place in the UK or overseas to take a three, four and five year old??

come over to Ireland and rent a lovely thatched cottage in the country wth a stream in the back garden - and relax! Thats what we are doing and we already live over here but its nice to just get away. Alternatively go somewhere like Galway - beautiful city and loads to do for kids including the beach, aquarium, very child friendly city - no smoking indoors etc.

We stayed here last week and it was lovely. They are doing festive breaks. Also had a newletter from the Luxury Family Hotels like Woolley Grange about their preparations for christmas buying presents for all the guests that sounded nice but very expensive. Being with other families sounds as though it might be nice, but could be more painful, I guess. Somewhere with childcare would give you a bit of a break. The other ideas are all great.

No ideas at all, jmg but just had to say hello.

HELLO!

jnbsmum · 31/10/2004 11:04

We went to disney just after xmas last year. It rained a lot but it didn't stop us from having one of the best holidays of our lives. If we weren't buying our first house next month we would go this xmas too

lou33 · 31/10/2004 12:53

thailand

failing that somewhere hot with a nice beach

I'm a single parent too, and dd and I have yet to take our first holiday together. When we do, I imagine we'll either do something with friends, or will go to a resort with a children's club. Mark Warner, Scott Dunn Holidays, Club Med and others have resorts/packages that include a wide variety of activities (suitable for all ages/skills), and also offer a childcare option.

Investigating and organising activities for kids (and you) when you're away from home can be tiring and stressful....and then there's the constant decisions about where to eat, how to get there, etc, when you're away from home. That's why a single destination with all activities and food laid on appeals to me. Also, when I did this sort of resort holiday (Club Med)as a single person pre dd, I found that people were quite friendly and so could easily socialise if I wanted, or be left alone if I preferred that.

Other single parent friends swear that cruises offer the perfect mix of activity, relaxation and good food - but I think your children are probably too young for that sort of holiday.

Get yourself down to a travel agent's office, and do some investigating. I bet you'll quickly find something that appeals. Good luck. Holidays can be hard, and I think you're wise to plan something as a special treat for yourself and the kids.

jmg1, some of the Youth Hostels do lovely family Christmas breaks, including the ones in the Peak and Lake Districts. Highly recommended if you are on a budget and want your children to have lots of socialising opportunities without going the creche/nanny route.
As Coppertop says, HELLO. Nice to see you around again.

CountessDracula · 31/10/2004 19:54

Hi jmg, how nice to hear from you again!

How about skiing - lovely and xmassy all that snow, they could all go to the little nursery slopes classes together, how sweet would that be? Or just have fun rolling about in the snow and tobogganning.

I stayed in the Luxury Family Hotel in Fowey last year and it was awful. A really lovely place, Fowey and the hotel itself, but not enough for kids to do. The food was over seasoned nouveau cuisine and the childrens high tea cost £15 each for a plate of posh sarnies!!!!!!! That being said, the staff would do anything to help you re. bottles and babysitting service but if you are your own that would leave you the sitting room and a log fire for entertainment.

Maybe I don't appreciate the finer things in life...

What about CentreParcs? Do they open at Xmas?

wobblyknicks · 31/10/2004 20:56

Fowey is gorgeous but the Cornish CAN'T cook (probably why Rick Stein's rubbish goes down so well here!!! )

jmg1 · 31/10/2004 21:20

You lovely bunch of Ladies + you WK! if we lived in another land in another time I could marry you all!
Now I have some good ideas! Sun and beach sounds good, then maybe Galway for Easter and Disney next Summer!
Would the Canary Islands be hot in December?
Have not taken the children on a proper holiday since before their Mum died, really should soon, me thinks.
CD - remember remember the 12th of December!

You wouldn't be daring to suggest that I'm not a laydee would you??? !!!!

jmg1 · 31/10/2004 21:33

Course not, just checking you response time!

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 31/10/2004 21:35

Yeah right!! So, was that quick enough for you?

jmg1 · 31/10/2004 21:39

You have officially taken CT's stalking job!
I may be in Devon a week Friday, (so watch out) a builder who has done some jobs for me in the past, says I should go and live near Torquay, I may take a look at some houses down there. Was up in the Midlands last Friday, looking at a house + school. My jibes about Cornish pasties may come back and haunt me.

wobblyknicks · 31/10/2004 21:41

ARGH! Me take over anything ct's done? Next I'll be the one slumped in a corner in a puddle of god knows what drinking meths and wittering about Star Trek - NO!!!!!!

Will literally piss myself if you move to Torquay - will be able to kick MN for good because I'll have to spend all my time taking the piss out of you!!!

jmg1 · 31/10/2004 21:43

If you spend as much time taking the piss out of me as you do on mumsnet - that would be one shit load of piss taking!

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 31/10/2004 21:44

Exactly - may have to rope ct in to help with the workload!

jmg1 · 31/10/2004 21:45

and while you are at it bring Lou in on the gig, but three on one is not fair!

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 31/10/2004 21:47

Lou can be the emergency back-up - if me and ct both have to actually look after our kids at the same time (god forbid! )

wobblyknicks · 31/10/2004 21:47

So you fancy buying a hotel and calling yourself Basil?
