Welcome everyone

Hothell agree re disipline I have had to hold my words so many time with SIL. They let the children get away with so much but thank heavens the 6 yr old is getting a bit better thanks to school and other activities. BUt sil does stop kids being manesco (SP) most of the time .....

francagoestohollywood · 24/11/2007 14:07

Rosa, great! it's great to know that amazon will deliver in Italy, I can stock up on English dvds etc like Peppa Pig etc.
Yes, taking the dc to England during the summer is another thing we were thinking of doing, that is if we can impose on our English friends for a while . It'd be good to catch up with friends, dust off our English and escape from the heat (the heat: I miss it when I'm here, will def hate it after 2 days...)

OP posts:
Rosa · 24/11/2007 14:14

Heat ....tell me about it we are already thinking about when to go to the Uk next summer !!!
Good for you to come back to the Uk so the dc can see friends and have the best of both worlds!
Am trying to find a pop up cot for dd and the more I look the more I get confused so have asked MNetters for help !!
Only 2 weeks to go and I have so much still to do here starting with Australia Xmas cards all needing letters. rest of Italian presents for Adults that say 'non voglio niente' but they do really !! Not to mention thinking about packing

francagoestohollywood · 24/11/2007 14:28

do you mean a travel cot? I bought one from argos (ages ago), a graco for 30 quid or something. still working after 5 yrs

OP posts:
Rosa · 24/11/2007 15:11

Yes something similar but the box style ones weigh a ton and also dd can climb out of the box / playpen that is at the swimming pool she sort of loops her arms over and then pushes back with her legs so no point in them really . am looking at the ones like nomad
This is one of the more expensive ones but there are some sililar style ones much cheaper and would like to know why !!!

francagoestohollywood · 24/11/2007 16:54

would it be for travelling in general or just when you come to England? Because if it's just for when visiting your parents here, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a toddler bed, this is on offer at 59.99 at argos, they lasts up to age 5 (ds is sitll sleeping in one!!!

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 24/11/2007 16:55

(I agree that the NOMAD is very cool)

OP posts:
ernest · 24/11/2007 18:30

re travel cots, I was looking at getting the nomad, but then remembered we've got a sun tent like this. and I'm just going to get the mattress separately, this solution folds up miles smaller and just pops up, whereas the nomad's got poles and stuff to faff around with, then you've also got the sun thing for the beach in the summer.

Franca, if you want english books to buy when you're there, play.com delivery for free and generally better service than amazon.

re books, obv. don't buy anything, just if you know one book is good, then you can maybe let me know, but don't worry too much as I'm sure the school can give me some tips.

Rosa · 24/11/2007 20:43

In Italy we have a cot bed it should fit dd up to 3 - 4 if a brother or sister doesn't come along and boot her out. We really need a travel cot as need to take it to friends at Christmas and then to Gran Canaria in January as we are guessing they will have standard cots or a travel cot - which she will be able to climb out of so we were thinking of something more on teh floor .
We have a UV tent for the beach . There are some that have no poles just do pop up . Someone suggested a ready bed but I wonder at 20 mths is she too small - she does move a fair bit in her sleep. Plus sleeping on a plastic lilo for more than a few nights ???
Am off to look at play.com now !!

francagoestohollywood · 24/11/2007 21:00

mmmm I really wouldn't know what to recommend as both dc have never been that adventurous and never tried to climb out of cot/travel cot. The nomad looks really cool, do you think she'll try and make a run out of it? or what about those portable guards? However I think she's too tiny to go in a big single bed (imho)...

will go and have look at play.com as well. ernest, if I find something particularly irresistible I'll get it as I have an addiction to books in general.

OP posts:
hotHELL · 24/11/2007 23:20

quick hello, after a day in brighton! going to check this playcom too. night.

francagoestohollywood · 24/11/2007 23:25

Rosa · 25/11/2007 09:09

Well done Franca..
Nice day in Brighton med ..haven't been there in years.
DD full of cold again was awake most of the night ended up in with us dh rolled over as he had to get up at 5am so it was dd and me!!
I agree with single beds she is not ready for them yet. My fear with the Nomad or similar ones is that if she is 'shut' in then when she stands up it will topple over and possibly scare her. I was looking at one of those ready beds like a mattress on the floor - ok she might get up and out but she can't really fall out of it and could put pillows round the edge or put it up against a wall....They are also much cheaper !

ernest · 25/11/2007 15:43

warning - we've got 3 ready beds and at least 2 of them have unidentifiable leaks, so ime, don't bother. Why not just get an inflatable mattress + sleeping bag, if you feel the ready bed option is suitable? All 3 of mine were in a normal single + bed guard at 18 months, and ds3 is really tiny - he's only 12 kilos now at age 4 and he had no porblems. None of mine did. I'm def. just going to get an inflatable matress and use it with the sun tent. Money isn't really an issue, it's just the thought of getting more stuff. Am imagining the move next year with horror - it was bad enough the last time we moved, and we've got SIGNIFICANTLY more stuff now than we did then, groan

hotHELL · 25/11/2007 19:24

Anyone know when Pippi is back?
I love throwing stuff away when moving, old papers and crap taht accumulates.
I wish I was in Venice Rosa...lovely atmosphere this time of year...

PippiCalzelunghe · 25/11/2007 19:47

I AM BACK!!!!!!

I've got a minute as we are about to have a curry (fed up with lovely italian food!)

DH op went very well. big scar actually but he was out and about the same day and not a lot of moaning (more before than after.)

hothell have a friend like this and have stopped seeing her with her kids. best dcision.

will talk more later. and thanks for missing me !!!

Rosa · 25/11/2007 19:58

Thanks for the advice dd is not ready for a bed she still throws herself round her cot when asleep bum in the air then flings herself to one side we actually put her bumpers back up as was worried. Also at g parents hourse single beds are very high off floor as they have drawers underneath she can't climb up on them and she sort of slides down hanging on to the cover !
Will have another think and a look at the travel cots when am in the Uk I have 2 weeks before we need one- as long as she fits in her uk cot I have my doubts. DD is about 12kg now I think !!!!
Pippi welcome back glad all ok with op and you had a good time. Atmpsphere in Vce could be better its gone hot again had a zanzara in the bedroom last night its getting nebbiaish in the mornings pity as we had a lovely cold week last week but with blue skies...My I have rambled a bit ( had a beer

hotHELL · 25/11/2007 20:10

lovely Italian food!!!!
good about the operation!

good on you rosa for the beer.

have also decided not to see this friend for good with the kids, will have to see her without them , i am a coward, i cannot tell her why, she really has no clue and cannot act so judgemental.

francagoestohollywood · 25/11/2007 20:35

welcome back pippi!!!!!!!
pippi, did you go for the scan?
hothell, I've never been to brighton, is it nice?

Today it's my birthday, dh and dc brought me breakfast in bed and made me a cake. friends came, it was lovely

Rosa, are you sure re the cot? I'm very to say that (because I'm lazy and she actually loves it) dd is still sleeping in a cot . but she likes it. I'll have to move her to a single bed in Milan and I'm already stressing about it...

OP posts:
PippiCalzelunghe · 25/11/2007 21:39

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

oh yes I forgot to tell you, i have been for the scan - it's a GIRL!!!!! DH was a bit shocked at first.

hotHELL · 26/11/2007 08:20

Buon compleanno franca!

Una bambina? wow!

Rosa · 26/11/2007 08:22

Oh Franca Happy belated birthday hope you had a yummy day. DD will be in her cot here in Italy for another year or so at least - hers here is a bit larger than the Uk standard cots but not as big as a cot bed she has a good 30-40cm before she can touch the bottom . It is the Uk that is a problem as the cot and nonnas is much much smaller and narrower hence trying to get an alternative. They don't have space for me to gat another bed so I am trying to look for alternatives
Pippi a femmina now you can start thinking about names !!
Hot- why do you not be frank with your friend. Say I love your friendship but ds is not happy with your ds at the moment so maybe we should just let them explore other friendships for the moment and see how it goes..But we can still meet maybe ????

francagoestohollywood · 26/11/2007 09:33

I love Rosa's diplomacy !. I'm not sure I'd be so brave though, especially if she's convinced of raising a little angel...
Rosa, in Exeter there's a couple of independent shops selling baby's stuff, plus a mothercare... come over .
Yes, we had a lovely day. But at 4 am ds woke and was sick on his bed... I hope it was just indigestion .

Yes Pippi, it's totonomi now

OP posts:
hotHELL · 26/11/2007 10:39

ohhh, i will keep seeing her, i cannot tell her that her children do my head in, i think she thinks i am very punitive in my way of bringing kids up, parenting is so personal, you only have to look at some of posts on mumsnet. I didn't see her taht often thankfully. Have another friend who also i try to avoid inviting round, has a very naughty dd who is not aggressive, but never does as she is told, and mum just laughs it off, once she was drawing on my walls, and i told her off and this friend said 'don't worry they can be washed off, it is good for them to explore, blah, blah' - i had to explain that we just didnt' allow drawing on walls, and she got her to stop by giving her lots of biscuits. I thinks I am a nasty controlling mum!
