The country will be what ever it will be but will you be ok? Seriously, do you want to grow old in a country that you dislike so much?

expatinscotland · 23/10/2007 22:38

'Life is too short for being so bitter Franken. You are clearly unhappy, take expats advice and decide where you want to be.'

And honestly, when you're to that point, it taints your whole life, and it shows through, no matter how unconsciously.

Change doesn't happen overnight, so start making some tracks - put the house up on the market, start looking for jobs elswhere, etc.

No, it's not easy, but nothing ever is for the most part.

Some folks are the bloom where you're planted types, or the home is where your heart is types.

I'm the home is where no matter what it slung at you, you'd be willing to stick it out type.

No harm in that. It takes all types.

As a northern Prod in Cork (dh is also from NI) - we have been wondering whether if he got a job in Derry/Londonderry would we live in NI or Donegal. We've been here 12 years, and were in England in the eighties, then back in Belfast for a few years.

Hey watling

Clem, I remember you! Your sister posted too! I think I may have been missy or missbossy.. not sure

Westport, my favourite place Well, it's a toss up between there & Galway!

When we were wee my da used to say to us on a Friday morning "Don't yous doddle home from school, we're going over the border this afternoon" code for a weekend trip to Bundoran!!

Clementine1 · 23/10/2007 22:41

I lived in Dublin for years and couldn't wait to get back to Mayo.

SKerrymum I have two options for where you live, you live either you are a Kerrywoman or a North County Dublin woman, if you are the latter I lived in Rush for a couple of years after we got married. My father was a big GAA man - Chairman of the Hurling Board so had a lot of clout and I saw what he did for the lads in his care and what they are today. Its a great organisation and the heart of most rural communities today.

Frankendooby · 23/10/2007 22:42

Totally agree sKerrymum

a lot of things suck everywhere, that is true, skerry.

Franken knows this, but it seems to go deeper than that.

so you tried to make it work and it didn't?

it's not the end of the world!

fuck, i'd be dead of disappointment if that were the case!

You are covering all bases there Stleger with your Derry\Londonderry!

Carmenere · 23/10/2007 22:43

Yes and we all live in democracies that allow you to enter into local politics(particularly easy in Ireland) and eventually national politics if you really want to change things.

It's best to write it down and see it for how you feel it, Franken.

then you can move on from there.

like i said, i'm an immigrant.

and that's now for everyone.

lots of folks have tried it, some mulitple times, and it's not for them and so what?

so they go back to where they feel happiest and there's no harm in that.

I am on the other side of the fence, being Irish by birth. I moved to the UK when I was 25 and would never move back.
I think Frankendooby makes some fair points. The healthcare system in Ireland is outrageous. Chipmonkey, it may not be the same in all parts of the UK, but I have never not been able to see my NHS GP on the same day, if I need an urgent appointment. We in the UK may complain about the NHS, but universal medical treatment that is free at the point of care is a very precious commodity.
As far as Bertie Ahern is concerned, I do not understand how any sane and rational voter could have ticked his box last time round - do people like being governed by a bunch of cynical rip-off artists?
And the stranglehold that the Catholic Church still has on the education system makes my mind boggle.
These were all issues I had problems with before I left the country, and not enough has changed to make me change my mind.
But I still love Ireland, I just couldn't live there.
