Haloo.Just wanted some opinions fro people who have moved to Ireland to live and of course fom people who are Irish and have lived,do still live here.Opinions on the Politics,Laws,Education,Work etc.
I moved here from the UK and although i used to visit lots to see family I find living here extremely difficult in many ways.Just wondered how others have found it.Thanks in advance

sorry for triple post.

still getting used to Vista (our landlords left us a laptop to use).

fireflyfairy2 · 23/10/2007 22:21

Franken, why are you living in a country you clearly despise?

Carmenere · 23/10/2007 22:21

Look you are not enjoying the experience, it is not working for you, you sound terribly bitter and perhaps you should think about moving. You are not really getting any of the truly wonderful things about the culture and perhaps they don't really exist if you don't have strong family and friend ties there. Well they do but some people just don't fit in and you sound like you don't and life is too short to be miserable.

Also, have to disagree about only the mass goers being chosen for teams. Here, the bloody best players get chosen for teams & i'd say it's the same everywhere else!!!!!!!!

45 Euro for the doctor! That's cheap! We pay 50 here in Meath! But the advantage is that you get to see the doctor the same day and can usually just walk in to the surgery.
Don't agree that you have to be related to someone to get a job. We have almost full employment here, how can it be that hard? I've never been employed by someone I knew outside of work and that also applies to most people I know.
Is Ireland more racist than the UK? I don't necessarily think so but I do think that the racists in Ireland are more vocal than the ones in the UK because a lot of the non-racists are not brave enough to speak out against it, as we really don't like a row.
Corrupt politicians? Only in Ireland? Oh puh-lease! I never did like Bertie and there always were rumours about him and others in FF being crooked, fgs he was Minister for Finance when Charlie Haughey was in power and signed a lot of cheques for Mr Haughey that were distinctly dodgy! But there are worse politicians in the world and none of ours have ever led our country into wars based on false intelligence of WMD for example. This is no excuse for voting Bertie back in, of course and I hope he won't be next time.
I don't btw like the Republic being referred to as Southern Ireland. This is our country and to have it called "The South" is wrong. For a start, the Republic includes the East, West and South of the Country and even 3 of the Counties of Ulster in the North. Only six counties are owned by the UK and I feel that it diminishes our country to refer to it as Southern Ireland.

Well put, Carmenere.

Life is too short for being so bitter Franken. You are clearly unhappy, take expats advice and decide where you want to be.

Doesn't apply here either KM.

I am catholic, dh is protestant. Dd has been in the lads hurling team for the past 2 years & plays every bit as good, if not better, than some of the lads.

They're starting a girls camogie team soon.

She has been to mass a handful of times this month & that has mostly been with school

chipmonkeyPumpkinNorks · 23/10/2007 22:28

How did you end up in Waterford anyway Franken?

Clementine!

chipmonkeyPumpkinNorks · 23/10/2007 22:31

But once you drive into it, there's no driving out again, is there?

fireflyfairy2 · 23/10/2007 22:33

Clementine, are you the same one that used to post on MTW? I used to get cloth nappy advice on there before I had ds

I can't actually remember what my username was though

fireflyfairy2 · 23/10/2007 22:34

Sorry, it was MO not MTW

Clementine1 · 23/10/2007 22:35

Thats me!

Frankendooby · 23/10/2007 22:35

Agree Expat that i sound bitter.I am just terribly disappointed. We have tried so hard to make it work...TWICE! Am well aware the UK isn't perfect.Don't know why i said Southern Ireland Chipmunk as i usually call it the Republic. It is very hard to get jobs in the public sector here.My dp has only ever been employed by UK companies.I am a paediatric nurse and tho i have worked as one for 5 years can't get registered as the training in UK didn't provide enough hours!Am cross with Nursing Board in UK too as they changed the training and have admitted there are probs for other nurses.Whilst i agree re The War and WMD..surely Ireland is complicit..re accepting US dolar and allowing the stopovers...Good men stand by and do nothing.
What it boils down to is what i said at the top of yhis message i suppose.I have Iish friends[honest]who feel the same about the way the country has gone.I hope it will be ok.
