Haloo.Just wanted some opinions fro people who have moved to Ireland to live and of course fom people who are Irish and have lived,do still live here.Opinions on the Politics,Laws,Education,Work etc.
I moved here from the UK and although i used to visit lots to see family I find living here extremely difficult in many ways.Just wondered how others have found it.Thanks in advance

hello all.
this is my first post on mumsnet, but i have been reading for a few days .
im from ireland, and i agree with a lot of the points made.

however, my husband isn't irish, in fact he is an african immigrant who came here seeking asylum.

once he was granted a visa to work he never had a problem getting a job.

he now is in a very high position in his company, not being irish did not hinder him in any way.

i work in social services and am about to be made redundant.
however i cannot seek alternative work becaue the hse (health service board) has put an embargo on recruitment, because it overspent and is out of funds.
what it spent it's funds on i really cannot work out, it certainly was not our health care system!!!

as for schools, yes they teach religion.
i suppose we are used to it though so we dont see it as strange.
my lads go to the local gaelcsoil and they are state run (i think someone asked earlier if they were independant schools).

one of my sons plays gaelic football in his own time, and they both play gaelic and hurling as part of the cirruculum in school.

the lad that plays gaelic outside school also plays soccer.
his inclusion on the gaelic team was never based on whether he went to mass or not, and certainly not on a family history.

im catholic, and the kids have been baptised and the boys have made their communions.
my husband is anglican (used to be muslim, just to confuse ye!!), and the children fully participate in his church also.

anyway, look at me rambling on and i have a child to collect from gaelic training!!!

what i wanted to say i suppose, every country sucks in some respects and is great in others.

if they didnt, well then we'd all be living in utopia, and the place would be jammed!!!

Clementine1 · 27/10/2007 18:03

No I never did provide you with a free couch - but will put you out of your misery - I am a chocolate bar in another life!

gerts · 27/10/2007 18:46

mmm.
will have to think about that.
jasus, imagine on this big tinterweb i'd get recognised!!

Clementine1 · 27/10/2007 18:47

I went to college in Sligo.

Clementine1 · 27/10/2007 19:04

but thats not where you know me from. If you dont get it I will tell you but its nothing sinister. I have never met you in RL - thats another hint. Think about the chocolate bar and I remember telling you about Sligo before and I thought you were someone else who did the same course as you but they were a year ahead of you.

fireflyfairy2 · 27/10/2007 19:17

Hey Clem, I remembered my name from MO the other day, it was Lady Marmalade, not Missbossy. That was for another forum years ago!

Clementine1 · 27/10/2007 19:21

I remember you now. You helped me find a tractor for my DS's birthday once.

gerts · 27/10/2007 19:32

clem, think i know you know!

Clementine1 · 27/10/2007 19:33

whats the chocolate bar?

fireflyfairy2 · 27/10/2007 19:34

Yes! I did! I remember that! Funny that's what I'm looking for at the minute at ds is looking for one from Santa! He wants a tipper, a bailer & a dumping trailer too

As well as a list as long as my arm.. including the biggest cow.

DD wants a new helmet for camogie, the Mycro one she likes is nearly £40 alone! She wants a pink one... I'm thinking I can get a white one & then ds might be able to wear it when dd isn't!

I have just saw an ad for Sunblest veda there, totally drooling now! Bloody diets!!!!!!!!

gerts · 27/10/2007 19:40

kitkat?

Clementine1 · 27/10/2007 19:50

Bingo!

Georgeous · 28/10/2007 08:24

Hi everyone,

Gerts, I do agree that being Irish is a state of mind. And if so then I am definitely half and half. When I was in Scotland they used to ask if you wanted rice or chips with your pub lunch, or did you want half and half? My DP calls me half rice, half chips when he's in a cheeky mood!
