Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

What a wonderful OTD (as always, but still). Those women are so inspiring - and fearless. It is so funny how a day of work refusal helped in equal pay. I bet it was the housework and childcare that pushed the men over the edge Grin. The detail that the cat was female was brilliant. I am so happy you offered her a virtual fish Smile.

I was reminded about a previous OTD yesterday. BigGirlHippo has been asked to write a short essay about Ada Lovelace. She did find it inspiring, but her comment was along the lines of “but it was essay writing and touch typing mummy, that is English. For computer science I want to do the actual coding.” Grin

I am out for an early morning walk in the park. The trees are all possible colours of yellow, orange and red. So pretty.

TracysShoulder · 24/10/2020 08:43

Thanks Lily and morning all. Reading that I thought I must not be quite awake, so had to go back and read it again. Grin
Poor cat with its head injury.
When you say Annie was the first person to go over the Falls in a barrel, there were others who attempted this crazy stunt?

Concorde was so futuristic-looking wasn't it?

meercat23 · 24/10/2020 08:46

Thank you Lily and Good Morning all

TracysShoulder · 24/10/2020 08:50

Saturday breakfast in the BC is our grab-and-go for the Clunkers on errands, or graze-all-day for those that want a lazy day.

Coffee and juices as always.

Morning, everyone.

Annie did it first, Tracy, (well, technically, the poor cat did it first), and then other people emulated her stunt. She was 63 and widowed - she'd tried just about everything to stave off destitution. She was actually a qualified teacher but age and sex were against her. So she went over Niagara Falls.

There's a TV film in that. Nothing surer.

I lived near Niagara Falls as a youngster ("near" in the Canadian sense - a mere three hours' drive - so it was considered a local attraction) and I'd never heard of her.

Invisible women. And dangerous women. They are all there in history. We just have to look for them.

Yes, a film in the making for sure Lily. Who do you suggest as the leading lady?

Is anyone else finding the Welsh supermarket fiasco unnerving?

Yellow, sorry your hopes were dashed about your partner coming home. Are you not allowed to visit at all?

thegcatsmother · 24/10/2020 09:49

Who decides what counts as essential though in Wales? What if you need a new sheet or new pants or a bin or a chopping board? This only pushes people into shopping online and takes away from the physical stores.

TracysShoulder · 24/10/2020 09:53

Exactly gcat. It's crazy. Instead Amazon will get all the business. The pics of supermarkets cling filming non essential items would be funny if it wasn't so scary. Can you believe we are even having this conversation?

AnneRIPanki · 24/10/2020 10:00

Morning!

TracysShoulder · 24/10/2020 10:05

Charles Moore in the DT. Good read.

TracysShoulder · 24/10/2020 10:07

Morning Anne. Grab yourself a comfy seat.

We're off for our flu jab, then inspired by Hippo, we'll walk round the reservoir to appreciate the autumn leaves.

AnneRIPanki · 24/10/2020 10:31

My lovely assistant is leaving to go to Amazon.

OVienna · 24/10/2020 10:32

Go Annie!

AnneRIPanki · 24/10/2020 10:33

The weather is horrible here .

Nelllyyy · 24/10/2020 10:43

Morning Clunkers,

Oh @LilyLangtrey, the poor cat with his bleeding head, but well done to Annie, 63 years of age as well, the thought of that makes me shudder. 🥂🙀 🛢

A raised glass to Alice. 🥂

A raised glass to the to the women of Iceland, well a thumbs up. 👍🏻 🇮🇸

@TracysShoulder, the breakfast as usual is the best, I’ll have the scrambled, with the green juice followed by the smiley coffee. 🌷

I miss Concorde, it flew over us every Tuesday and Sunday, the noise was horrendous but only lasted for seconds, we all use to fly out the back door to see, much like we do now when the Chinooks fly over.

This morning I have walked to the shop, (not our local) and have bought a french stick (which was still warm) I was thinking of making some homemade soup and the french stick will go nicely with it.

I think Judy Dench should play Annie, she has the look of a very determined lady and I love her as an actress.

The Wales debacle I really don’t know what to think of it, very unnerving Tracy, why can you not buy chocolate, clothes or electrical goods is beyond me, what is the difference of putting a bar of chocolate or a tin of beans in your trolley?.

The place in Wales where we stay never had a good word to say about him, they have only recently started to get back on their feet as well.

Windy here, the leaves are really dropping and as Hippo says an array of colours. 🍁🍂

Sons Birthday today, he is isolating with his girlfriend in the of the land of the Shuttle, he shares his birthday with The Kray Twins. 🥴

Nelllyyy · 24/10/2020 10:49

The clocks go back tonight. 🥴

Tracy Strictly is on tonight, it’s the first dances. 😁👍🏻

AnneRIPanki · 24/10/2020 11:00

Yes @Nelllyyy . What if your kettle has stopped working? Things break . Children grow and need larger clothes ( so do I with the lack of hill walking )
They will probably try to stop you buying alcohol up here . Saint Nic ....
Hope your son has a decent birthday.

AnneRIPanki · 24/10/2020 11:03

My friend was on one of the last Concorde flights .
She flew to the US and back . Nicholas Lyndhurst was on the same flight
We saw it fly up and down the River Forth on one of the goodbye flights .

AnneRIPanki · 24/10/2020 11:04

Thanks for the OTD, Lily . It takes me a while to come to x

Nelllyyy · 24/10/2020 11:10

I know it is ridiculous, the photos of all the blocked off isles, I just can’t get my head around it, I know it is only for a short time, but hey, come on. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think it will the same here soon, people will start to panic buy and stock up again, if it does happen it won’t be fun that’s for sure. ❤️

AnneRIPanki · 24/10/2020 11:14

My MIL will be ok though. She has 5 kettles and 5 toasters in her loft .

😂😂😂🤣😁
MoreHippoThanPenguin · 24/10/2020 11:34

Popping in quickly to grab some of those delicious pastries. We are supposed to follow a strict diet for medical reasons (since yesterday, I am supporting Mr Hippo, but boo for limiting nice things), so I am enjoying these virtual pastries all the more 😋.

It is crazy with the prohibition on selling kettles. That is an essential item. I agree that all business will go to Amazon. It is just the last the ordinary stores need, the world has gone mad Confused.

And no chocolate??!! Honestly, if there is a hugely depressing lockdown, at least let people have some chocolate in the evenings!!

blossomsinmay · 24/10/2020 12:04

Good day all, and thanks for breakfast and OTD. The weather is building itself up to something here - it hasn't quite made its mind up yet, but probably wet and windy - so that puts the dampers on my afternoon gardening plans.

I am inordinately pleased about the trade deal with Japan (for reasons I won't go into), and full of admiration for Annie - in a film I think Olivia Colman would be great. She can turn her hand to anything!

MissSarahThane · 24/10/2020 13:01

They will probably try to stop you buying alcohol up here . Saint Nic ....

Well good luck to her if she tries that.

Really nice article on the BBC (for once). Putting the clocks back at Windsor Castle. Beautiful photographs, beautiful craftsmanship. Here

So nice to go there and read an article that isn't all doom and gloom and putting the most negative possible spin on things.
