Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

DistantShores1 · 22/10/2020 12:20

1066 meercat, that beats my 30 year old mahogany dining table 😬

[Grin] I did mean to type 1066, it sometimes feels that long ago. It was actually 1966, so you can see, almost as long ago!!

As well as Anne's beautiful wallpaper!

Yes, chicken lady is in the old cafe but I don't think she realises it has changed hands or that there's a new crowd in there, even if they do seem really familiar. It's hard to recognise other people when they are all wearing masks, isn't it? I often spot someone I think I know but when I talk to them, I realise it's not who I thought after all. Very embarrassing. Imposters, fraudsters and bank robbers must think all their birthdays have come at once. Still, it's the world we are living in, right now. The virus makes everyday life just that bit harder.

I wanted to post a photo to cheer all of you up but I don't seem to be able to, so you'll just have to make do with a Matt instead...

Ok, meercat not meerkat as per my typo,
you win the thread today. I lose miserably for my SOH bypass.

LilyLangtrey · 22/10/2020 12:49

Meercat, I think we should get you to write a future OTD. You could call it '1966 And All That'. Grin

Hi everyone, just popping in for some leftover breakfast (it looked so delicious) and a coffee.

I loved the conversation about those knives (I have just caught up with the thread).

gramgram, we had pizza last night as well. I had about 10 consecutive four-minute calls with BigGirlHippo’s various teachers (virtual parent evening). After that ordeal, I had lost all will to even move. And was subsequently told off by BigGirlHippo for having missed booking a zoom slot with her French teacher 🤦‍♀️.

Just back home after a three hour football camp for LittleBoyHippo and Little Hippo. LittleBoyHippo is cross because some people played to rough and Little Hippo has been back at the piano for 15 min. She is just about to switch to the flute. Tracy I would like to record them....but I also want to be supportive of this newfound love of music. I fear that if they heard themselves play, it would put them off all sorts of music for years....

yellowspanner · 22/10/2020 13:55

Good afternoon and thank you for all the good wishes for my partner.
He is still on intravenous antibiotics and is still being assessed. No visiting and only 1 person can ring the ward.
But he is sitting in a chair and drinking.
I was really worried because the ambulance took nearly 2 hours to come and he was getting more and more confused. The paramedics were amazed to find his temperature so high.
Still, he is going to be ok.

LilyLangtrey · 22/10/2020 13:58

Well, thank goodness for that, Yellow! You must have been worried sick. He is in the right place now and being properly cared for. This virus...it just makes times like this so much harder.

Don't forget to look after yourself too.

@yellowspanner , look after yourself too . Lily is right.

blossomsinmay · 22/10/2020 14:18

Glad he's on the mend yellow

Yes, those little knives are fruit knives - they used to sell them in gift shops, and my mother was fond of buying them as a memento when she went on a coach trip somewhere with her cronies. She used hers for cutting up her apple if she'd taken a packed lunch with her. I've still got a couple of them somewhere.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 22/10/2020 14:36

Yellow, that sounds like good news. It must have been so frightening Flowers. So happy he is on the mend.

MissSarahThane · 22/10/2020 14:40

I like having an in-house historian.

Smile

I might also have mentioned that Greenwich also has (among other interesting things) the Royal Hospital for Seamen, aka Greenwich Hospital, founded by Queen Mary II in 1692. Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor were the original designers, Sir John Vanbrugh later took over. The buildings were later used by the Royal Naval College, now by the University of Greenwich jumped up poly.

The view from General Wolfe, up there by the Observatory, is one of the great London sights. And lucky to get it without a lot of bl**dy tourists in the way.

To the left, second pic, you can just see St Paul's, in the centre of the picture. To the right, third pic, zoomed in, the Millennium Dome.

Good to hear your partner is in good hands yellow but a worrying time for you.

We are accumulating a little stock pile for our retro corner.

Retro has really made a come back. A local business has made a very successful living from selling this sort of stuff.

For anyone who uses fb and is interested in supporting British made goods there is a site called Buy British made.
It promotes local businesses and has sections for most things.
Interestingly there was a girl making vintage bracelets and earrings from the handles of vintage teaspoons. They were lovely.

Nelllyyy · 22/10/2020 15:23

@yellowspanner, so glad your hubby is on the mend. 🌼

I managed listen to pop master.✅

Daughter turned up, we ended up going to the big park for lunch, lunch cheese and ham panini, with coffee and a blueberry muffin, walked around the park, fed birds, ducks, swans and squirrels, the weather was lovely and the sun was out, throughly enjoyed it. ☀️

@MissSarahThane, I love that view from top of Greenwich Park and looking across the Thames at the (as I call them) the big buildings, cannot beat it on a summers day.

Lily you have been very busy. ❤️👍🏻

I love the knives, Ideal for my tiny hands.

Afternoon tea. ❤️

@meercat23, I can imagine you at the 1066 cafe with all the bikers. 😁❤️

I’ll hold my hand up to having pizza for breakfast. 🍕🥳

@MoreHippoThanPenguin, I laughed at Tracy saying record them and play it back. 😁

One final thing, daughter kidnapped cold rice pudding for grandsons, so saves me eating it. 🤗

@AnneRIPanki, you do make me smile/laugh.❤️

@TeflonTits, sorry. ❤️🌸

I really should stop using the emojis. 😁

AnneRIPanki · 22/10/2020 15:58

Never stop @Nelllyyy ❤️

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 22/10/2020 16:09

nelly , I laughed as well Grin. It is just...I so would like them to enjoy music. And in a way, it is lovely that they start trying to pick things out on the piano. But neither of them had piano lessons and they find the pedal funny 😖😖😖.

And after the delight of the impromptu playing, I had to listen to their “proper” practice. I have just sat through 30 min of flute and the violin has just started up 😖😖😖.

Onprozacandmyhighhorse · 22/10/2020 16:09

Afternoon everyone. Was up in Glasgow this morning and had breakfast in the Willow Tearooms in Buchanan Street. Was delicious but not as good as Tracy's. Thank you Lily for this morning's OTD. I'm loving the history lessons. I've got lots of posts to catch up on. Had a rubbish week at work and just couldn't get in the mood. However I'm on holiday now for a week so am going to forget all about it and have some me time.
Treated myself to a new dressing gown from The White Company today. I think I'll get ready for bed now 😜.

You are a hero, Hippo. One day, you too will be our Woman of the Day, in honour of all the mums who endure. 😁
