Good afternoon, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

I live in a little village in the middle of nowhere. No buses at all, no street lights, no pavements. Tiny little shop/post office that is closing at the end of the month because the post master is at least 95 and she wants to retire.
It was held up yesterday afternoon by a young man threatening her with a knife.
Whole village is traumatised. Nothing even remotely exciting happens here. Well, it has now.

Well it looks like we may compromise slightly on fishing.
Gcat...any news from Brussels?

But if people don't or can't download the app, that isn't a failure of T&T. Well, yes it is, because they can't be contacted via the app on their phone to be told they need to self isolate.

There needs to be a way of doing it that reaches the whole population perhaps?

Nelllyyy · 14/10/2020 16:19

@thegcatsmother

Nelllyyy Given that I had mentioned Chairman Miaow on here and that's a massive clue), I would hope you had worked out who I was already!

Baked and Zombie; track and trace seems to be predicated on the populace having smart phones and downloading an app. I don't have a smart phone, nor am I inclined to get one just for the app.

I’m only known for my cheesy smiles and my none functioning brain, oh and for bringing the tone down. 😁

You know I luffs ya. 😁❤️👍🏻

The government's message on testing is responsible for people seeking tests for inappropriate reasons like a snotty nose. A huge public information campaign is required to set the record straight and leave testing for those who should be tested in my book.

If they start it this week the message might have got through by the time we see the end of the inevitable two week circuit breaker.

BJ won't ignore it for much longer imo, NS will probably beat him to it if he doesn't get his skates on and then he will look like he is hanging onto her coat tails once again.

Irrespective of whether a national lockdown is the way to go, I cant see it being avoided. It is no good saying I've got no cases here so why should it affect me. Travel needs to be stopped to stop the spread.

I'm due to go to friends in Norfolk and Suffolk in a couple of weeks, they have virtually no cases and I do where I live. Although I'm not going out, only to two select food shops (and currently the doctors). I'm working from home, transmission risk minimal.

I'll still have a good long think about it though nearer the time, before I go to visit friends. I would absolutely go if I could isolate beforehand but with a child at school that isn't possible so I suspect I won't see my lovely friends in 2020.

Yellow Summit happening tomorrow I think or soon thereafter. No agreement on MFF, and without that COAVID cannot be unlocked. It depends on what Frost tells Boris. there are mini deals being done to get everything working (they need our airspace after all), and they want to sell us things, so who knows?

I am hoping for a clean break, and then once we are out of transition and the dust has settled, we can start talking properly as equals, as opposed to the Commission viewing the UK as a child that needs to be put on the naughty step.

I am already buying as little EU produced stuff as possible.

That is so sad and depressing. We had a similar thing in our village some years ago. Some criminals discovered that Wednesday was early closing so went in and threatened the postmistress with a baseball bat, knowing there wouldn’t be any customers. The postmistress tried to continue but was too traumatised and shut the shop and moved away.

Oh that is so horrible, the poor lady and being 95 as well, there really are no words for this.

I really hope it doesn’t affect her in any way, especially at the age she is.

I hope he is caught soon and punished.

That is awful, people can be animals. Was she physically ok? Any police bother turning up or where they are to busy reading twitter or investigating journalists for doing interviews?

ZombieFan · 14/10/2020 17:46

I think we could compromise a little and tamper off EU catches over several years.

But the French mentality is crazy. It would be like the British saying the only way we will do a deal with the EU is if the French give us ALL their fish.

ZombieFan · 14/10/2020 18:02

I am not sure any country has a successful tracing app. Blue tooth was never designed for this sort of thing, it cant properly measure distance, it cant tell if someone is behind a wall or a glass screen. If Apple and Google cant make it work then no one can.

Plus big tech deliberately make devices obsolete as fast as possible so people are forced to upgrade. Again no government can make an app work on a device that big tech has made obsolete. The whole this is a complete waste of time. Maybe a simple symptom tracker would have been better?

Good luck Boris trying to stop people have tests without symptoms, everyone will just lie. And others will scream blue murder they cant get a test.

blossomsinmay · 14/10/2020 18:02

@NessalovesSmithy The thing is though, that you could have a cold and covid at the same time. Along with the snotty nose, there is often also a sore throat and a loss of sense of smell, both of which are possible covid symptoms, so you need to get tested anyway.

I'm getting so fed up with it all now.

AnneKipanki · 14/10/2020 18:06

That is sad @yellowspanner x

THE OTHER PLACE IS OPEN

A new Admin is asking in a thread in Chat if we wish it to remain open.

StormzyinaTCup · 14/10/2020 19:05

Just popping in with a quick coronavirus question, does anyone know if the 'extremely vulnerable' categories have changed? I have just had an email out of the blue from Sainsburys to say that they have identified an 'extremely vulnerable member' in our household (DH) and we get priority delivery slots. We didn't get this in March, although we knew DH was in the more vulnerable category (heart issues) he wasn't classed then as 'extremely vulnerable'.

Looks like I'll have to do some checking out.

TeflonTits · 14/10/2020 19:15

Crankly, tread very carefully with regards to that.

Just popped in to nab some Dinner from the butlers!

Crankley · 14/10/2020 19:24

Care to expand on that?

TeflonTits · 14/10/2020 19:28

Crankley, I will send you a private message. I really dont want to post public and risk losing the BC.

TracysShoulder · 14/10/2020 19:32

Yellow, how awful for that poor postmistress lady. Honestly, is nowhere safe now? I'm so sorry for your village.

ZombieFan · 14/10/2020 19:33

Yea please dont talk about that on here.

StormzyinaTCup · 14/10/2020 19:34

Something doesn't feel quite right about this development given recent events (could just be me though being ultra cautious).

TeflonTits · 14/10/2020 19:36

Stormzy, you are 100% right.

yellowspanner · 14/10/2020 19:43

It is very sad about the post mistress. Her husband was a German prisoner of war here and stayed on after the war. He is 98 and in hospital.
Her whole family live in the village and there is good CCTV footage. And yes, the police are involved.

Gcat, the Council of Europe (well the EU) are meeting tomorrow and I believe that is the deadline for an agreement. But Boris May extend in the interests of cooperation.
I just hope David Frost sticks to his word and we don't give in. The have already conceded on passporting.

This makes it even sadder. ❤️❤️

Glad the police are involved and they have good clear viewing CCTV.

Let’s hope they catch whoever that did this.

BigGreenOlives · 14/10/2020 21:13

A few pages back someone mentioned Sarah Lucas, I went to see that exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, it was quite eye opening.

I’ve had a completely disrupted day, hoping tomorrow goes more smoothly. Nothing bad has happened but everything was more complicated than it needed to be. I want to spend an afternoon lying on the sofa reading.
