'You have to work twice as hard to get half as far'

'Red sky at night, the barn's on fire'

If you fall off and break your leg, don't come running to me.

If the wind changes, your face will stick like that.

Twiglett · 16/09/2007 09:37

The older I get the more often I hear thsi kind of thing coming out of my mouth

"Don't be a busy fool"
"if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all"
"all's well that ends well"
"discretion is the better part of valour" (I've actually SAID this at work a bit recently! )

Twiglett · 16/09/2007 09:39

"if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all"

edam · 16/09/2007 15:46

Doesn't clout = vest, though, from the days when people used to cover themselves in goosegrease under a vest, to keep the cold out?

Slubberdegullion · 16/09/2007 15:51

Never judge a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be.

That might be difficult if you need a mortgage though

TheApprentice · 16/09/2007 16:02

Aah, this reminds me of a poster I had when i was little that i used to LOVE - it was a huge "busy" picture with lots of different proverbs illustrated on it. I used to look at it every night before I went to sleep....

mytwopenceworth · 16/09/2007 16:04

Maybe not all good to live by, but all good to remember!...

Good fences make good neighbours
Beauty is only skin deep
Beggers can't be choosers
A closed mouth catches no flies
A friend is easier lost than found
Hatred is as blind as love
He who wronged you will hate you
Grumbing makes the loaf no larger
Only a fool speaks all his mind
Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it

etc
etc
etc

themoon66 · 16/09/2007 16:11

Empty vessels make the most sound

Twiglett · 16/09/2007 19:35

"only a fool speaks all his mind"
