Hello Mumsnet
YorkieHusband here. This is the first time I have been on here, although I have heard about it from my wife, Yorkiegirl.
For those of you that know, I was made redundant over the summer, and have just got a job at Marks and Spencers. Before I start my training next week, I have to do a bit of research on M&S. I am sure there will be some of you who hate M&S with a passion, but it would be helpful to me if we could try and keep this as positive as possible. No slanging matches if you please!
Anyway, I need to know what your favourite M&S product is and why. I hope lots of you reply to this and help me out!
Thank you very much
YorkieHusband

That's "heaven"!

whizzz · 09/10/2004 17:56

We love the M&S Indian curry range - its our Friday Night treat. Why...it's just soooo scrummy ! (what I don;t like is when they don't put the Naan breads anywhere near the curry & you have to play 'Hunt the Naan' ! [grin})

I also like the jewellery (anything sparkly !) as its good value, it doesn't fall to bits or go tarnished.
Good luck with your new job ! (do we get a discount for all this help ???)

Cadbury · 09/10/2004 17:57

Oh yes. The jewellry! I ask for some each Christmas!

lou33 · 09/10/2004 17:57

chocolate refrigerator squares and their hold up stockings

Cadbury · 09/10/2004 17:58

Lou! At the same time?

whizzz · 09/10/2004 18:02

I think all us 'helpers' should each get M&S vouchers - don't you !?

Their scarves are nice too !

turquoise · 09/10/2004 18:07

Chocolate refrigerator squares sound good, wish I was in England to do a bit of research!
I forgot luxury vanilla custard in my list, so good I gorge it straight from the tub.

lou33 · 09/10/2004 18:07

If at all possible Cadbury

gingernut · 09/10/2004 18:26

Knickers, fresh gravies, children's toys and books, cards and wrap, flowers.

I also tend to buy gifty things in there so that people can take them back if they hate them. I'd be much less inclined to buy such items from M&S if they did change their returns policy.

HTH and good luck with the new job, Yorkiehusband!

Cadbury · 09/10/2004 18:30

You're my kinda gal Lou!

lou33 · 09/10/2004 18:31

Angeliz, Waitrose do a nice pastichio as well.

lou33 · 09/10/2004 18:31

Blush Grin

discoinferno · 09/10/2004 18:34

Knickers Knickers Knickers oh and their garden peas. When I was pregnant with DD1 I was regularly seen on the train home with a tray of peas eating them.

discoinferno · 09/10/2004 18:36

oh and their cream rice pudding mmmmm

carla · 09/10/2004 18:50

YorkiegirlandHusband, I wonder if there's a way YH could let them see this, make them aware of it, and pay MN a commission for input like this? If I were Mr-Big-Cheese at M&S that alone would want me to secure YorkieHusband's employment. Fantastic feedback for a small donation. They'd be daft not to!

littlemissbossy · 09/10/2004 18:51

Food at M&S is the overall winner for me as well:
cumberland pie - a particular favourite with the children
spinach and avocado salad - yummy but at £3.49 way expensive
selection pizza - i.e. 3 flavours in one - kids again love this
party-food range is excellent, I always buy this at Christmas
bread - their selection of different mini-rolls in one packet are a really good and unique idea - no one else does this
BTW, in relation to their clothes, I ALWAYS bought dss's clothes at M&S when they were younger because they were excellent quality and reasonably good value for money - although in their teens they wouldn't be seen dead in them TBH, not even the Beckham range. As for younger ds, I used to buy his baby clothes there but for the last couple of years, they have gone down hill - although have recently bought him one "special occasion" outfit. As for me, can't remember the last time I bought something there, however have seen a couple of nice things in their new collection... but not nice enough to actually buy.
HTH, good luck with the job

carla · 09/10/2004 18:59

Food food definitely food!

Do they still do those little deep fried camemberts? They were DELICIOUS!

Actually, their toys/puzzles are pretty good too - elsewhere on the highstreet can seem a bit samey, but the M&S branded toys & games are often a bit different and good value too.

discoinferno · 09/10/2004 19:17

something a little more mundane but I always buy their slippers.

zebra · 09/10/2004 19:51

Cute but quality men's sox. Seriously!

hewlettsdaughter · 09/10/2004 20:04

pain au chocolat! (our weekend breakfast treat)

hoxtonchick · 09/10/2004 20:40

limited collection clothes, & some per una ones.

i like the food, but don't often actually buy it.... oooh, the sultana cookies, scrummy.

great for cards. and the toys looked pretty good the other day.

jampot · 09/10/2004 20:42

oh yes the cards are nice and good value but another "room for improvement" would be better selection of cards in multipacks suitable for boys birthdays - they all have flowers/girly things on them.
