Can you let me know what your first reaction/thoughts are on this name (for soon-to-arrive dd2)?

Daphné

What's your initial reaction/what sort of person does it conjure up. We're trying to find something that works in France and England. I know how it sounds to a French person but wonder what image it conjures up to an English person. I'm a bit concerned it would end up as something awful like Daff. Also, I can't work out whether it's an upstairs or downstairs name - any views?
Fwiw the other alternative is Victoire (but dh objects as that doesn't really work in English he tells me).

TBH I think there's a danger of other kids calling her Daffy, and if it upsets her they will do it more.

totaleclipse · 07/09/2007 12:26

I'm thinking 'Neighbours' granted it was a long time ago, but it was my first thought.

MascaraOHara · 07/09/2007 12:27

Neighbours was my first thought as well lol.

It also makes me think 80's but I don't know why

RosaLuxembourg · 07/09/2007 12:29

My initial reaction is don't do it. There is no way she will escape being Daffy.

beansprout · 07/09/2007 12:29

For me, it conjours up an image of an older woman, wearing a silk neck scarf.

Sorry, I appreciate finding a name that works in both French and English must be tricky.

happystory · 07/09/2007 12:29

I think it's pretty in French and interesting in the way lot of 'retro' names are but TBH in English it initially conjures up members of the womens institute to me.

ConnorTraceptive · 07/09/2007 12:29

bit old ladyish

NoBiggy · 07/09/2007 12:29

Scooby Doo?

MrsFogi · 07/09/2007 12:30

Thank goodness for mn and honest opinions. Please keep the opinions coming as I'm going to have to argue this one out with dh!

What about Delphine (sp?)

Daphne makes me think of scooby doo
x

my2weegirls · 07/09/2007 12:31

to me (a Scottish person rather than french or english ) it reminds me of one of the daughters from 'the broons'.

stealthsquiggle · 07/09/2007 12:32

I would think Neighbours.

Hmm... Rose/Rosalie? Catherine?

sazzybee · 07/09/2007 12:32

Bit middle-aged, sorry.

If you do go with it, I'd drop the accent too.

meandmy · 07/09/2007 12:33

can you tell someone in real life that will be brutally honest my youngest sister diid it when we were choosing names had planned on calling my dd tilly untill my sis started saying silly tilly willy (dp mr w) so we changed, you will find something when you least expect it think of all the ways it could be shortened what the first letter of each name spells out etc and remember kids are cruel!

stealthsquiggle · 07/09/2007 12:33

Amelia / Amelie? (would almost certainly be shortened to Milly in English)

Mumpbump · 07/09/2007 12:33

Made me think of Daphne du Maurier! Nice name, but perhaps a little old-fashioned?

harleyd · 07/09/2007 12:33

scooby doo

ruddynorah · 07/09/2007 12:33

first reaction is that it sounds very 80s, makes me think of daphney from neighbours. if you want a french/english name what about mathilde?

belgo · 07/09/2007 12:34

prefer Delphine.

The accent of Daphné will be considered pretentious in English.

cupcakes · 07/09/2007 12:34

ds wanted me to call dd2 Daphne, Fred if she was a boy. He's a big Scooby Doo fan.

McEdam · 07/09/2007 12:34

First thought is some girl from the Malory Towers Enid Blyton stories. Don't think I've come across it in anyone under the age of 60.

However, Victorian names like Ivy are coming back into fashion, Daphne might (although it's more early 20th century). Odd, isn't it, some of those Greek names such as Chloe are popular, but Daphne isn't.

HorseyWoman · 07/09/2007 12:35

Ummm, it reminds me of my dad's whore... the one he had an affair with and the one who got imprisoned for drug dealing (my dad's middle class]. It reminds me of the 80s/early 90s and a dodgy character in neighbours. But it is a nice name and if it is a name you both like (and you don't have the memories of the same daphné as I do) then go for it!

nailpolish · 07/09/2007 12:36

i like it

does it really matter to you waht other people think?
