Can you let me know what your first reaction/thoughts are on this name (for soon-to-arrive dd2)?

Daphné

What's your initial reaction/what sort of person does it conjure up. We're trying to find something that works in France and England. I know how it sounds to a French person but wonder what image it conjures up to an English person. I'm a bit concerned it would end up as something awful like Daff. Also, I can't work out whether it's an upstairs or downstairs name - any views?
Fwiw the other alternative is Victoire (but dh objects as that doesn't really work in English he tells me).

How about Sylvia/Sylvie for an Anglo-French name?

harpsichordcarrier · 07/09/2007 12:38

I like it too, I think it's pretty
BUT she will be called Daph or Daff or possibly Daffy Duck
that's the British for you

belgo · 07/09/2007 12:40

there are loads of gorgeous french girls names that work well in english -
Adrienne
Veronique
Anais
Elise
Stephanie
Chloe

my favourite is Delphine.

BigBearistheBigBear · 07/09/2007 12:40

I really like Daphne, but not the accent. People who don't realise the French connection will just think it is Daphne, chavved-up. Delphine is pretty too...

How about Colette? Otillie? Melodie? Elodie?

belgo · 07/09/2007 12:41

Was also thinking Elodie.

BigBearistheBigBear · 07/09/2007 12:42

Aurelie?
Odette?

BigBearistheBigBear · 07/09/2007 12:44

oooh, inspiration has come to me: how about Marguerite?

Or Sophie?

lulumama · 07/09/2007 12:46

apologies if mentioned already, but what about Amelie ?

EffiePerine · 07/09/2007 12:47

Heloise?

(sorry can't do accents!)

Florence is nice in French but poss not in English

Ellbell · 07/09/2007 12:48

Tend to agree with other posters about Daphne (with or without accent).

Victoire in English either sounds male (like a foreign version of Victor) or looks like a typo for Victoria. Would Victoria not work at all in French?

There are names which work in both languages, like Madeleine, Catherine (admittedly pronounced differently), Sophie, Claire, Isabelle, etc.

There are also French names which are well known in English and therefore people will tend to pronounce correctly (-ish), like (as someone as already said) Amelie or Hélène or Thérèse (Marie-Thérèse?), etc.

Good luck in finding something you both like.

TinyGang · 07/09/2007 12:48

Elodie is pretty belgo

Daphne I think of a lady of a certain age.

Ellbell · 07/09/2007 12:50

Ooh, I love Elodie.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 07/09/2007 12:50

honestly???

I makes me think of a old woman that used to sing in my church choir, who's hearing wasn't quite as it should have been and she sang VERY loudly.......out of tune as she couldn't hear the piano/organ............

BigBearistheBigBear · 07/09/2007 12:53

Fleur?
Violet?

I'll stop now.

I want another baby girl!

Good luck!

newgirl · 07/09/2007 12:55

daphne

scooby doo and to the manor born

mind you there wont be four in the class so maybe good choice? Drop the accent though!

MascaraOHara · 07/09/2007 12:58

I love the name Amelie

Slacker · 07/09/2007 12:59

I like Daphne! But then I like Deirdre and Sylvie too so perhaps my taste is suspect...not sure any of them are going to make it onto my shortlist

Elodie is beautiful, and Delphine is pretty

daisyandbabybootoo · 07/09/2007 13:01

What about Jacqueline?

Squiffy · 07/09/2007 13:03

Armelle? Nathalie? Annabel?

Not Daphne.

LaDiDaDi · 07/09/2007 13:05

I quite like it but I do think of Scooby Doo.

I prefer Sylvie though.

Anna8888 · 07/09/2007 13:09

But Amélie has an accent too , if you mind about those.

I had the same problem, as did my sister, as did my cousin, as we are all in Anglo-French couples.

I have Flora Elisabeth Zoë
My sister has Lucie Constance Beatrice
My cousin has Emma (don't know about middle names)

belgo · 07/09/2007 13:09

Mathilde
Louisa
Beatrice

all work well in english and french.

belgo · 07/09/2007 13:10

Anna, off the subject, have you started your new job?

Anna8888 · 07/09/2007 13:10

No, starts after the Toussaint holidays.

Anna8888 · 07/09/2007 13:12

My daughter started school today and I want to settle her in to school before starting my job, when I also will have to settle her into a little childcare
