Can you let me know what your first reaction/thoughts are on this name (for soon-to-arrive dd2)?

Daphné

What's your initial reaction/what sort of person does it conjure up. We're trying to find something that works in France and England. I know how it sounds to a French person but wonder what image it conjures up to an English person. I'm a bit concerned it would end up as something awful like Daff. Also, I can't work out whether it's an upstairs or downstairs name - any views?
Fwiw the other alternative is Victoire (but dh objects as that doesn't really work in English he tells me).

There was a Clara in my daughter's new class this morning. That works well in both languages. And Anna

millie99 · 07/09/2007 14:25

I am sure she will get called Daffy Duck so its a no from me too. My vote goes to Sylvie

belgo · 07/09/2007 14:33

just seen another thread with names and am reminded of one of my favourites:

Celeste

redsky · 07/09/2007 14:35

My dd is Clara - she is now 15 and has always liked her name. Dh and I still love our choice.

donnie · 07/09/2007 14:36

a friend of mine is named Daphne - it's a lovely name. When she was a child she got everyone to call her Danni which I also like.

Berries · 07/09/2007 14:37

Blue rinse, navy suit, member of WI.

Love Delphine, Eloise, Nicole, Celeste.

Lauriefairycake · 07/09/2007 14:37

All these french girls names are beautiful.

I like Daphne, reminds me of the Mancunian character in Frasier.

maisemor · 07/09/2007 14:38

I think of Daphne (the stripper) from Neighbours. She was really nice though if that is any help .

I like the name, I just always think of her.

Lovecat · 07/09/2007 14:41

Daphne = Scooby Doo

Delphine is beautiful, but for me is now irretrievably linked to Peppa Pig's French pen-pal, Delphine Donkey... which may percolate through to the classroom (kids are mean!).

There are now a lot of English Amelies (sorry, can't do accents either) since the film came out, so I think you'd be fine for people pronouncing it - I know several of DD's NCT pals have that name. Also a few Elodies - very pretty!

Anna8888 · 07/09/2007 14:46

Clémentine?

sweetkitty · 07/09/2007 14:52

Sorry first reaction is that I don't like it.

Theres some lovely naems on there though I really like Elodie very pretty.

thirtysomething · 07/09/2007 14:55

It makes me think of dapne in Frasier. Are you in France? Will go down a lot better there. I think it's pretty but some people may not like it..

mytwopenceworth · 07/09/2007 14:56

First reaction? Don't like it. Sorry. I'm showing my age cos I thought Neighbours, too!

citylover · 07/09/2007 15:56

celestine or armandine. can't see why a french name won't work in UK

i like the name though

Boco · 07/09/2007 16:06

I think Daphne sounds like a saucy secretary. 'ooooh Daphne!'. I'm not sure why though

I love Delphine though - really pretty.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/09/2007 16:08

depends how it's pronounced - Daph-naaay might grate a bit. I also think of Daphnia, which are water fleas.

Countingthegreyhairs · 07/09/2007 16:09

I think Daphné is much nicer in French than in English personally.

Names of french-speaking girls in dd's school (some not so good in English but maybe worth a go):

Isaure
Mathilde
Laura
Lucie
Lavinia
Aurelie
Louise
Anais
Ambroise
Manon
Nathanie lle
Arielle
Solange
Lisa
Marie-Louise
Helene
Melina
Sophia
Blandine

Btw isn't Victoire a boy's name?
