I'm 40 next week and I have no idea at all what I want of my birthday - any ideas please?

It's not that I'm the woman who has everything but absolutely nothing springs to mind. Boyfriend keeps saying that he's not picking up any hints and that's because I've not given any! Help. Don't want to resort to the usual mix of cd's, books, jewellery etc. Would like something a bit more significant. Don't fancy days at spas or anything like that, just a solid present.

Thank you

I am 40 at the end of the year and am not expecting anything more exciting than kitchen implements! Would love to know what you get if it is good so I can start lobbying dh! Would you let us know next week?

stickynote · 01/10/2004 12:46

What kind of budget are we talking here?

throckenholt · 01/10/2004 12:57

I am the same - my birthday yesterday - and there was absolutely nothing I wanted - we have a house full of stuff already.
MIL sent a card saying will give you pressie at the weekend. I have no idea what they have got me - can't think of anything I would be glad to have (sounds mean doesn't it !). DH has no idea what they may have got either.

Tinker · 01/10/2004 12:57

Hmm, hadn't really thought. £100?

My dh is about to turn 40 and I canvassed opinions as to what to get him here . There were some really good ideas. What about an experience of some sort, anything you'd wished you'd done but never got round to? Otherwise diamonds are always nice .

Tinker · 01/10/2004 13:05

I was looking at your thread sticknote - inspired me for this one . But, not sure I want an experience, am experienced enough hur hur. He mentioned something like, well he said furniture but I don't think a wardrobe from Ikea would be my idea of a present. But along those lines. A beautiful thing I could treasure. But what?

beetroot is normally good at this stuff

ScummyMummy · 01/10/2004 13:43

How about an ipod mini? V. beautiful indeed and he could get it engraved with a romantic message and put all your favourite songs on it.

Can't believe you're 40. You look about 25.

Tinker · 01/10/2004 13:46

I wish SM

That does look quite cute though

Tinker, how about an antique?
Not sure what sort of thing you like but I love them.
You also get the fun of looking around for something you'd like.
And being an antique, there's a story behind whatever you buy.
Happy birthday BTW!

MrsCoddyClooney · 01/10/2004 14:10

ppicture?

poppyseed · 01/10/2004 14:16

Hot air balloon ride - or does that fit into the spa category??
Tattoo?!!
Diamonds/gold
Photographic memory - we have just been to Venture and can well recommend them (although are a bit pricey ) You can see their stuff at www.thisisventure.co.uk

Flumpette · 01/10/2004 14:18

An evening at a spa whilst partner looks after kids! Higly recommended - take a good book and a swimming costume and have a massage. Just perfect - recommend somewhere like Nirvana off M4 at Reading - it even has a flotation tank. I'm off there tonight to celebrate my 38!

Cam · 01/10/2004 16:03

What about a solitaire diamond ring for the left hand Tinker?

Actually beety, they are quite nice. Was expected to see eye-watering price but they're not.

Cam - I shall ignore your mischievious remark

Rowlers & Coddy - Yes antiques and picture would be nice but you don't know when you're going to see something you like

Flumpette - hope you have a nice time but would need drugging in order to get me into a swimming costume

poppyseed - have been to a venture party thing. Nice but pricey

I was 40 last year

and I can't remember what I got!

Apart from some very nice malt whiskey

What about a lovely squodgy leather handbag at a price that you wouldn't normally pay?

something in cashmere?

you really really don't look 40!

tamum · 01/10/2004 18:47

You don't want a digital camera or anything like that do you? That's what I got for my fortieth. Like the squooshy handbag idea!

Tinker · 01/10/2004 18:51

Had thought of a decent handbag as well, do need one.

digital camera - well, think "mil" is getting one BETWEEN US!! (me and boyfriend) because it's his birthday the following week. I think if she knew it was my 40th (don't think she does, he's 7 years younger than me) she would get it just for me!

lilibet - you don't look 40 either darling

Oooh, I like the rings beety! Tinks, will post if I have a blindingly good idea.

Rhubarb · 01/10/2004 18:59

Bloody hell! Tinker there is no way I would have said that you were 40! Or Lilibet for that matter! But I would want a bottle of champers for starters, obviously, and then maybe one of those adventure day trip things you can get from Boots, being a racing car driver sounds fun! Then I would dye my hair purple and get another tattoo. Or is that too sad?
Right now it would just be lovely to have a house with a washing machine and our own private toilets and showers......how did I ever take them for granted?
Happy Birthday to you all!

Tinker · 01/10/2004 19:02

Rhubarb - where are you? Good to hear from you Boyfriend has just scanned this thread an scoffed at the budget...

Rhubarb · 01/10/2004 19:05

Créon, near Bordeaux, tell the Boyfriend he might be an ex if he doesn't get his credit cards out for you! A girl is entitled to spend money on her birthday!

acnebride · 01/10/2004 19:07

Hope he thought the budget was much too small
