How did you get your name?

Inspired by the other thread about how many people you know with the same name - how did you get yours?
Mum wanted to call me Corrine. I decided to turn up 5 weeks early and mum was quite poorly after I was born. I was whisked off to SCBU and Dad was sent up to see me. The nurse asked if I had a name and he told her the name I have now. Turned out he didn’t like Corrine and when put on the spot just said the first name that came into his head! He thinks he may have seen it on someone’s name tag. By the time mum was up and about it was too late 😂

Haha, I hope your mum liked it!

My name is my grandmother's middle name. I love that I have that connection with her.

rosydreams · 04/01/2020 17:07

my mother asked my sister what should we name your baby sister she said Cordelia lol

commoncoot · 04/01/2020 17:08

My parents wanted to call me Rhiannon Rickie my grandmother objected saying it was ridiculous and chose my name and used her name as my middle name.

cloudjumper · 04/01/2020 17:09

I'm named after a Beatles song! Smile

GrannyBags · 04/01/2020 17:13

@DramaAlpaca she did! She was allowed to pick my brother’s name when he was born.

How I got my name could be quite outing but my mum had an idea of a name she quite liked but heard my chosen name in the news then when she went to register me, she couldn't remember how to spell it so I have a hard to pronounce name with a complete unique spelling 🙈

LunaLovesgood · 04/01/2020 18:04

I was meant to be Georgie but somehow my dad managed to convince my mum to name me after a film star he quite fancied stating that it was an unusual name and there'd be noone else with it Hmm It wasn't unusual at all.

QueenOfOversharing · 04/01/2020 18:04

I was born 6 weeks premature 51 years ago in a European country - my mum had to give a name, she asked where she was. They told her town name & she shortened it. The hospital was run by nuns & my mum initially thought she was dead.

JorisBonson · 04/01/2020 18:05

Named after a famous singer who my dad loves, not her known name but her actual real name (ooh cryptic)

iklboo · 04/01/2020 18:09

My first name is the surname of my nana's favourite actor.

SedentaryCat · 04/01/2020 18:13

I was meant to be Donna but when my dad went to register me I ended up with the name I have. Not sure why (suspect he disagreed!) but I'm glad he did as I love my name.

iklboo · 04/01/2020 18:13

@cloudjumper I'm named after a Beatles song!

How was it being called Yellow Submarine 😄

SlightlyWizened · 04/01/2020 18:17

My mum wrote to a friend in Ireland asking for a list of Irish names and chose one for me. Then 18 months later gave my brother one off the list

Morgan12 · 04/01/2020 18:20

My name is my grandmothers maiden name. And its Morgan. May aswell just say considering my username 😂

Musicalmistress · 04/01/2020 18:21

A nurse at the hospital named me.

turnthebiglightoff · 04/01/2020 18:23

I was named after a character from little women, as was my mum :-)

Sgtmajormummy · 04/01/2020 18:23

First name: the midwife who saved my very premature life.
Name everybody uses: reminiscent of father’s birthplace and shortening of maternal GGM’s name.

Namethecat · 04/01/2020 18:26

My dad wanted to name me after his mother which is a short name.
My mum wasn't a fan of short names so her name was lengthened to become mine ( still a proper name )

Proudpeacock · 04/01/2020 18:28

I was given the name that my father would have had if he had been a girl.

My brother was named after my great aunts husband who died around the time he was born. He wasn't a blood relative, my parents weren't particularly close to him and apparently he didn't do much other than watch tv so I have no idea what they were thinking.

I have come to the conclusion that they are very unimaginative.

LajesticVantrashell · 04/01/2020 18:31

I was named after a Bob Dylan song that my Mum & Dad both loved.

Kanga83 · 04/01/2020 18:33

My first name was a compromise as my mum wanted one name and my dad another. It's very very common from their parts of the world. My daughters name means warrior. She was very poorly when she was born and Luisa was a Spanish name (husband is Spanish) that means warrior so it fitted. My sons name means Blessed (Benedict) as we never thought we would be able to have a second child.

Screamqueenz · 04/01/2020 18:37

Named after 3 queens of England. My my.was into history.

cricketmum84 · 04/01/2020 18:40

I'm named after a song too :) my mum changed the spelling slightly but it's still the same pronunciation. The song was was from 7 years before I was born but she loved it. To be fair I love the song too even though I get a bit embarrassed when people sing it to me 😂

cptartapp · 04/01/2020 18:45

I was going to be Natalie which I love. But my mums friend beat her to it.
I was named after a barmaid my dad know. He went to register my birth and the registrar chose the spelling!

TipseyTorvey · 04/01/2020 19:48

I was named after a song by the Greatful Dead. Its a ridiculous name. I wanted to be called Susan 🤣
