How did you get your name?

Inspired by the other thread about how many people you know with the same name - how did you get yours?
Mum wanted to call me Corrine. I decided to turn up 5 weeks early and mum was quite poorly after I was born. I was whisked off to SCBU and Dad was sent up to see me. The nurse asked if I had a name and he told her the name I have now. Turned out he didn’t like Corrine and when put on the spot just said the first name that came into his head! He thinks he may have seen it on someone’s name tag. By the time mum was up and about it was too late 😂

All men in my family have the same name, it’s also the most common mens name in the world.

I traded it in for a new name a few years ago, I’m a bit of a coconut so I gave myself a very white name, but not a common one. No it isn’t simon.

cricketmum84 · 04/01/2020 20:50

@SimonJT surely it's Mohammed?

cousinboneless · 04/01/2020 22:41

My mum knew of someone but didn't like her. Used the name anyway Grin

I was named after my mums best friend when she was little, before she was taken into care at 8 years old, I don’t mind my shortened name but my full name just seems too posh for me and makes me feel like I’ve been naughty.

I am named after my Mum's friend who died when they was young.

itsgettingweird · 11/01/2020 15:01

My mum read a magazine and the woman's granddaughter had my name.

Mum liked it. unisex name but very male used normally and female spelling is generally different and various variations.

I have the usual male spelling. There is also a famous actress with my name (diff spelling)

I’m named after a moon. My father worked on the Voyager program.

My mum had decided on names but my dad didn't really like the girls one much.

I ended up being an emergency caesarean (and a girl!) so Mum was in hospital for a while.

Dad got sent off to register the birth and I ended up with the name he chose. Mum was deeply pissed off.

I don’t know, it’s two names stuck together and more commonly found as a last name in Italy and Brazil, a place name in Sicily and has five annoyingly similar syllables- it's horrible but having lived with it for nearly five decades probably too late to change?

I was born in 1963 and dm was all set to call me Christine when the Profumo affair broke, I ended up with my name instead when they couldn’t think of anything else they liked.

Charlottejbt · 11/01/2020 15:15

My mum chose my name because she said she likes the way it looks written down. I think it looks meh and sounds hideous. I cringe when I have to tell people what I'm called. I was hugely surprised when it came back in the late 90s. It's so frumpy and fugly that I can't imagine anyone other than my mum or Kate Middleton choosing it!

mymumsne · 11/01/2020 15:39

I was named after the midwife that looked after my Nan when my mum was born.

notwendy · 11/01/2020 15:42

For the first couple of days of my life I was called Wendy. When the midwife asked on about day 3 how little Wendy was doing, mum replied "she's called Ruth now". No idea how she settled on either name but it's a pretty big leap from Wendy to Ruth!

My mum couldn't think of a name she liked - ended up picking one from the newspaper Obituary column.

I use one of my middle names instead.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 11/01/2020 17:55

I was named after my grandmother sort of. Her name is not officially a shortened version of my name but it sounds like it could be.

My 3rd was named because of a bottle of coke. We were stuck between 2. I ran in the supermarket and grabbed a bottle of coke for dh when I was pregnant with ds3. It was when they had the names on the Labels on the bottles. Hadn't paid any attention to it in the shop but when I passed him it I noticed it was one of the names we liked so that's the one we went for. I still have the label in his baby box.

elQuintoConyo · 12/01/2020 00:37

My mother's name is the capital city of the country she named me after - she's France, I'm Paris, type thing. But not that! My middle name was her best friend growing up.
