Bloody Tescos

A whinge.

Went to a Tesco garage this morning for petrol. Petrol pump running exceptionally slow and by the time I'd got to £11.78 I'd had enough. Went in and paid with two £10 notes and the woman service gave me 22p in change. I queried this - said I'd given £20 etc. She was adamant I'd given her a £10 note and a £2 coin. I know I didn't as I didn't have anything larger than a 50p in my purse - I checked before paying in case I had the spare £1.78. Anyhow, the women serving said they couldn't do anything until the till was cashed up at the end of the day. To be fair they did phone over and ask if it could be done immedietly and were told "No" as they were still cashing up from the weekend. Ended up leaving my contact details so they could ring me when they'd cashed up.

Anyhow - here we are - 6.35pm - and no call so far - not even a "sorry you are still waiting" call.
I am not cross with the woman serving - everybody makes mistakes at times but I am annoyed with Tescos for not having the courtesy to ring. I don't have alot of spare cash at the moment so I can't afford to just lose the £8.22. Just hoping that there are no other errors which will put the till out and confuse the issue.

this has happened to me before and I've lost out, felt very angry and frustrated.

Theclosetpagan · 09/08/2007 11:05

Phoned them this morning - they are still very behind and won't have an answer for me before the weekend.

Am soo cross still - I KNOW what I gave the woman serving as it was all I had on me apart from coppers and a 50p.

What about cctv? Would it be faster to check that especially if you knew the time you were there.

Sunshinemummy · 09/08/2007 11:09

I'm sorry but that's appalling. I would escalate to someone more senior if you can.

womba1 · 09/08/2007 11:25

Theclosetpagan... for some reason they are fobbing you off! The tills are reconciled every evening so why you have to wait until the weekend is beyond me.

You really should call and demand to speak to the Store Manager or a Duty Manager. I used to be a Store Manager... it shouldn't take 3 days to sort this out!

bookwormtailmum · 09/08/2007 11:37

I thought they were supposed to keep the money on top of the till until they'd counted the change back to you? I'd go back and demand to speak to the manager. Don't go until you've got satisfaction .

Sunshinemummy · 09/08/2007 11:40

Womba1 I thought it sounded funny as we cashed up every day when I worked in retail. We all had to stay around until it was finished. They are definitely fobbing off.

womba1 · 09/08/2007 11:46

Sunshinemummy.. reconciling the tills was the absolute bain of my life when working for Tesco.. i always tried to avoid late night shifts but somehow i'd start at 7am and still be there at 11pm!!

I can't begin to fathom why they are fobbing the OP off though..if they made a mistake, they only have to admit it and perhaps offer a goodwill gesture as some form of compensation.

Sunshinemummy · 09/08/2007 11:48

I was only a Saturday girl but I agree it was painful. And we used to get a big telling off if we were more than £1 either way (this was Superdrug and Gateway not Tesco). I don't understand it either - it's bizarro not giving her her money back and also very bad for business (see bad name they're getting on MN).

bookwormtailmum · 09/08/2007 11:50

If I were the manager I'd use my discretion and pay her the money anyway as a goodwill gesture. Provided I knew that the OP (not saying that they are) wasn't a known piss-taker. £8 here or there is nowt to a store like Tescos but the bad publicity could cost more in the long run.

womba1 · 09/08/2007 11:55

I've worked for Sainsbury and Tesco and to be honest, i wouldn't touch JS with a bargepole! Their food might be of a better quality but they way in which they treat their Management team is appalling. My DH is employed by them and in 5 years, i think i can count on the fingers of one hand, how many good days he's had there!

Anyway, i agree, Tesco sure is getting a beating these days but if they continue to treat their customers in this way, they can't expect any different.

becklespeckle · 09/08/2007 12:07

I work for Tesco and they cash up every day! The computer system does its checks in the night and the staff check it all in the morning. As the mistake was made yesterday morning they would not know until this morning if the till was reading over but they should have an answer for you now. If I were you I would ask to speak to the Duty Manager in store, take your receipt with you (if you have it, if not they can pull a copy off of their system) and kick up a fuss.

roisin · 09/08/2007 12:12

How far is it to make a special journey and go in? I would go in person and make a fuss.

Theclosetpagan · 12/08/2007 07:38

Finally yesterday (Saturday) I got a refund of the £8.22 they owed me. Did they ring me? You must be joking - as per usual I had to phone them.
So - error made Wednesday - no contact at all from Tescos - we phoned again yesterday to be told "well I'll put you through to the cash office but I must warn you they are very behind". I was then put on hold for 15 mins before losing my patience and phoning again. This time I got through to the cash office who told me (very predictibly) that "actually the till was down for Wednesday". Well there's a surprise - I went in at 8 20am so who knows how many other 100s of transactions (and how many other errors)took place between that time and them closing for the day. Finally the woman said grudgingly that she supposed she could "let it through THIS time". My sarcastic "oh that's big of you" was completely lost on her.

Am gouing to be writing a very stiff letter to Tescos about their appalling customer service and with the best will the world I'll never use their petrol stations again.

Theclosetpagan... i'm pleased you finally got your money back but what a bloody farce!

When you write your letter, may i suggest you demand a reply because trust me, you won't hear a damn thing.

What area roughly is this Tesco's? I may be able to help you with names etc

bigknickersbigknockers · 12/08/2007 08:23

I have had dealings with Tesco's and when I ahave wrote to them all i got back was just a standard computer generated letter, very annoying

womba1 · 12/08/2007 08:29

bigknickersbigknockers (a woman after my own heart!)

In all the stores i've worked and the one store i managed, they have really prided themselves on excellent customer service and going that bit extra for the customers. I just don't get this current sloppy attitude and making out that it isn't their fault. So fecking what if they're busy or behind with their work.. that's their problem and their fault!

Theclosetpagan · 12/08/2007 08:41

Tescos in Chard, Somerset

womba1 · 12/08/2007 08:44

Ok... i'll contact a friend within Tesco and see what info i can come up with for you I was based in London so don't have any knowledge of the Somerset area.

elasticsortinghandstand · 12/08/2007 09:22

a long long time ago i worked at chekout, we were sposed to keep out notes until we had given change, then there wold be no room for argument. obviously times hae changed

Theclosetpagan · 12/08/2007 21:19

Thank you womba1 and to everyone else for your replies. Am going to write to Tesco tomorrow. As I said in my OP - it's not the woman in the garage I am annoyed with - we all make mistakes at times. It's the "can't possibly do anything about it" attitude and not even a phone call to let me know.

OP posts:
McEdam · 12/08/2007 21:26

write to the big boss - think is Terry Leahy but a google will find him and head office contact details.

Grrr on your behalf, that is so shoddy.

UpsetWifeandOtherWoman · 12/08/2007 21:45

When I worked at tesco we had to put money in a container (forget what it was called) and send it up a suction tube to the finance office, periodically throughout the shift. Last thing on a Saturday we had to cash up the till for the day. There was then a big cash up on a Saturday night/Sunday morning.

UpsetWifeandOtherWoman · 12/08/2007 21:47

Tesco are born of the Devil! I do not think you will get much back from them. I did get vouchers and free shopping when they did cock up big stylee, but they are truly rubbish usually. Go to Asda! I live in Wellington and we have to go to the Taunton one.
