O.k I really need a job. I am sick and tired of being broke all the time and with xmas coming up I am starting to panic as usual.

I have absolutly no experiance of anything (well apart from cleaning hotel rooms), and no qualifications either.

I don't drive either which limits things even more.

Have just spent the last few days searching every shop i can think of, hospitals e.t.c

Am not sure really if i will be any better off once i've paid for childcare but even if i'm a tenner a week better off that would help.

Anyone have any ideas of places i could try ???

I know, have been gobsmacked i can tell you. Everyone has been so lovely and understanding, it's made me sit here grinning like a cat this morning anyway.

Could you do any kind of volunteer work, in hospital or nursery or school, just to have something extra on your cv?

Are auxiliary nurses qualified at all?

Or do a basic college course in first aid or something?

tiredemma · 22/09/2004 10:37

its just off colmore row ( where rackhams is), most of the women there are mums so everybody is flexible, no responsibility at all, even if you bugger up a booking the team leader deals with it but the best thing about it is the concessions, me, dp and brats went to majorca last summer a weeks half board in a 4* hotel for $495 ( pound sign is buggered)
the offer is always there for you, we are crying out for mature staff ( just employed some dollybird 18 yrolds who just chat about boys all day and make huge mistakes so they are about to be "reshuffled"!)
anyway, plenty of time for that , im sure you have got lots of decisions to make over the next few months- dont want to tie yourself to just one.

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 10:44

Littlerach - Most auxileries now have to have NVQ i think. I could do voluntary work but can't afford to pay for childcare whislt i'm there.

Tiredemma - Sounds great, and they don't mind if i haven't any experiance at all ???
Only positive things i can offer is reliability and that i'm generally a quick learner.

Think i've asked you this before, but do you know roughly what the pay is and the shift patterns ???

Sorry for all the questions

nutty, there are people working where i work who have asked me how to spell tenerife, dont know where the costa del sol is and book people to fly into menorca when accom has been requested in majorca, so no , i dont think experience is the most important thing! they look for people who can work in a team, are quick learners and enjoy dealing with the public. the new shift pattern will be changing as of jan as the one we have now isnt working, but i dont think it would be relevant to you as im sure youd want to work pt?

i enjoy it as i love the people i work with, we have a laugh, i love my cheap holidays ( we have holidays that we would NEVER normally be able to afford) and the money is ok especially in the summer.
i work 30 hours a week, which is a basic salry of approx $835 pcm ( still no pound sign sorry!) and plus my commision- last month was $435 and this month is $556. so the money is not so bad.
although i love it though i dont want to be there in 5 years time but if you want a job with no responsibility then its ideal.

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 11:04

Does sound good. Mind you would have to brush up on my geography i think

Sorry another question, do you pay for childcare ???

I know some of your shifts are evening ones aren;t they ??How do you get home then ???

Sorry one more, do you actually have to sell the holidays or is it just people ringing up who want to book them already ??

OP posts:
tiredemma · 22/09/2004 11:17

we do pay for childcare, we get a discount as we have two in and harry has his nursery vouchers now, plus i only work mon, wed, thu now and every other weekend so i dont need nursery as much as i used to. i either share a cab home $3 each with anoher girl who lives in great barr, i get the bus (never on my own) or my dp or dad will pick me up, there are a few girls who live over your way, they either all get the bus home together or share a taxi.
the holidays that we sell are already advertised on teletext, the cust rings us and tells us what they have seen and we then check that its all stll available and hopefully book it, its a piece of p**s ! you do occasionally get someone who hasnt got a clue what they want and think that you know what they want so you have to do all the searching but ifs its not on the computer its not available, simple.
you would obviously get training and they never put you on the phone on your own until your ready, you will sit with a mentor for a few weeks then when your ready will "go live!"

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 11:20

It does sound very tempting i have to admitt.

Love the idea of money off holidays.

I am definatly interested so when you need me to let you know for definate let me know.

Thanks emma you have brightened my day

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 11:25

sorry if I'm going over old ground, haven't read all of thread.

I started working at woollies last Christmas, I'm so wonderful they kept me on, I work 10 hours a week in the evenings and I love it, its mentally very easy, but physically hard work. You can do extra hours if you want.

The shop is shut, we turn up the music and all the staff are just like me, mothers who want the extra cash, also it means that dh, spends time on his own with dd & ds and puts them to bed, I come home and they are both tucked up. You get 20% discount after working 6 months.

The only down side is that I keep seeing things I want to buy

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 13:43

Ahhh I knew i'd heard someone say they worked at Woolies of an evening but i couldn't remember who it was.

Have never seen any jobs advertised for an evening, did you specify it on your application form ????

What do you do, just re stock and stuff like that ???
We do have a largeish woolies near by, so i would consider it.

What time do you start and finnish if you don't mind me picking your brain ??

golds · 22/09/2004 19:03

If you go down and ask them for seasonal evening shelf fillers.

I am responsible for the drink and crisps (high profile heh !) the evening shifts start at 5pm and finish at 9pm, we never work past 9pm and I don't start until 6pm, I have to wait until dh gets home.

I noticed when I was in on Monday, they have got posters on the window advertising vacancies, I'd phone them up and ask, worth a try, loads of shops will want seasonal staff at the moment, but beware, if you can, don't offer to work Fridays or you will end up working Christmas Eve.

I like it so much, I am happy working a few evenings, so I can keep my days free

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 22:02

Thanks Gold i will either ring or ask next time i'm in town.

Those hours would suit me too as dp is usually home for 4.30.

Nutty, it's great to hear you sounding more positive today

I just wanted to reiterate what people have said already, really. The wiping bottoms thing is not a big deal - I thought it might be when I first started, but I don't even think about it now. And admittedly, quite a lot of my job (working nights) is wiping bottoms - putting them to bed, checking and cleaning pads in the middle of the night and then changing them again in the morning. I also think the fact that 'my' residents are mentally infirm (they have dementia or alzheimers) and so are less 'aware' that makes the personal bits a bit easier.

The interaction with the residents is what makes the job worthwhile.

Having said all that I'm looking for something else at the moment and hoping that my boss will let me cut my hours down to one night a week. Night shifts are tough (maybe better if you can get a sleep in position). I've been looking at youth work and the like, and think I will end up doing 2 or 3 different jobs to make up the hours I need. Will make the tax credit forms a nightmare, but should help with my very low boredom threshold!

Anyway, waffling. Hope you find something that will work out for you.

Jennisaurus · 22/09/2004 22:28

Nutty I did my NQV through the hospital I worked at. I started there with 4years of care home experience though. Sometimes they ask for NQV qualified, sometimes just 6mths care experience, something nothing at all. Basically you are an unqualified nurse.

My current job said that 6mths care experience was necessary and an NQV was desirable, but another girl I work with on the ward this is her first care work job.

I was also ditto Flossam. Take a job that will be relevant to a career, shop work is fine, but if you want to enter the caring professions, then work in a caring profession.

Jennisaurus · 22/09/2004 22:29

Bugger NVQ!!! Sorry!
