O.k I really need a job. I am sick and tired of being broke all the time and with xmas coming up I am starting to panic as usual.

I have absolutly no experiance of anything (well apart from cleaning hotel rooms), and no qualifications either.

I don't drive either which limits things even more.

Have just spent the last few days searching every shop i can think of, hospitals e.t.c

Am not sure really if i will be any better off once i've paid for childcare but even if i'm a tenner a week better off that would help.

Anyone have any ideas of places i could try ???

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 14:07

Yeah local hospital is good hope but i have already checked them and they have nothing.

I hadn't really decided between nursing and SALT ( me make a desicion, are you mad )

Glad i'm not the only one who coulkdn't do bum wiping. I have told dp that when he gets to that stage he'll be shipped out to the neraest home

May I suggest Nutty not nursing if you can't do bottoms there's a lot of bums in the NHS

clairabelle · 20/09/2004 14:11

BTW I've found those GAP hoodies if they're still any good to you?

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 14:12

LOL I know thats why i was gonna do childrens branch.

I knwo you have to do general for 12 mths but i managed to escape doing the hurdles at school for 5 yrs so was hoping i'd miss that bit out

OP posts:
nutcracker · 20/09/2004 14:13

Oh yes please, although haven't the money untiol end of mth so if anyone else asks first then let them have them.

What age and colour are they ??

OP posts:
clairabelle · 20/09/2004 14:13

You don't have to do general anymore I don't think, can't you go straight into child branch?

clairabelle · 20/09/2004 14:15

You can have them for a fiver inc posting. I'll go and look at them navy and grey I think age 3. I'll have a look.

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 14:18

They sound great thanks. A fiver is great and i do want them but still wouldn't be able to send a cheque until next tuesday as i'm overdrawn at the mo. If you can't hold them til then, don't worry.

Re Nursing, you choose which branch but then everyone does general core subjects and placements for the first 12 mths as far as i know.

Nutty I am a nurse but qualified 8 years ago, they were just starting PK2000 then and the CFP. But I did think it was only adult branch that had to do adult CFP. How about midwifery?

clairabelle · 20/09/2004 14:22

I'll wait 'til you get the money no rush. I'll CAT you.

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 14:23

Midwifery is alot harder to get into though. Lots of people i know have applied and not got in despite doing the access course.

Will await your emil, thanks.

fio2 · 20/09/2004 14:26

claribelle, she answers the phone and puts it through to the nurses

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 14:28

See I could do that Fio, no bottoms involved there

OP posts:
fio2 · 20/09/2004 14:32

she does the late shifts and gets lots of nutters on the phone to her thinking they are being chased by aliens and stuff and you have to take it seriously!

Jennisaurus · 20/09/2004 15:14

Nutty if you can do baby bums you can do adult bums, and you get gloves and what not!

Would you work as a cleaner? Schools and stuff always need ones.

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 17:27

Do you think Jen, i'm not so sure really. Old people scare me

I am now definatly going back to college despite my whinging on my other thread.
After seeing that i'd probably be worse of if i worked and paid childcare I think i'm going to have to find something either of a night or evening.
TBH I wouldn't mind doing a couple of nights a week somewhere.
Do you think i'd need childcare then ??? I could always sleep in the afternoon when Ds does, although it is only about 90 mins.

My mom works at the local hospital so i'll ask her to keep her ears open.

If anyone hears of anything in my area or has any more suggestions i'd love to hear them

Nutty xxx

Have you got a John Lewis or Waitrose near you? They're a very good company to work for, they really look after their staff. You get a decent discount in both shops after a qualifying period and because all members of staff are partners in the business, you get a bonus every year which is a share of the profits (assuming they make one of course). Waitrose certainly used to do "nightfill" which was something like 8-12 even when they didn't open such extended hours.

Jennisaurus · 20/09/2004 19:01

Nutty, if it was just about the wiping bums I would not have been doing this job for nearly 8 years now (oh god!). Its about the people. I spent 15 minutes wiping bums in a 8hr shift, its really nothing, you wear gloves and you do it quickly.

The rest of the time is what makes it worthwhile. It is hard work (physically) but its so worth it, and if you want to go into nursing its the best experience you can get. It is really trying sometimes (in a hospital or carehome) but it kind of gives you a boost when you deal with it and do ok!
You are more supported in a hospital, and there is less to do really. Which is nice sometimes, and not others, but if you only want nights most hospitals won't cater to that. I know people who work nights and then take the kids to school, sleep and pick them up so it can work!

Child nursing I believe is currently over subscribed 10 people to each place, so I would definately spend this year doing something yourself to make you stand out. Have you rang round all the local nurserys?

Good luck!! I think you will be fab with carework, you obviously have the drive which is a huge part.

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 19:06

Thanks Jen

I will have another look at the hospiatl website, and a look in general at care work.

Am going to have a think about it all over the next couple of weeks, don't want to rush in to anything and hate it.

Just another one to add Nutty that bum wiping will be a major part of your life if you do do nursing. It would make me feel a little quesy if I had to do it bare handed, but you wear gloves and it really isn't a big deal. Also, even if you do manage to get out of 'bum wiping' in your first year when you started your course, you may find that (or are most likely to find that) this upsets staff and may loose you marks. It's kind of like walking into an office and saying 'Oh, noooo I don't do filing!' or a cleaner who refuses to dust. Do you see what I mean? Students are marked now in many places based on their willingness to learn and interact with staff and patients alike. Also, not being funny but you are likely to come across far more 'gruesome' things than an elderly persons bottom in your career even if you do only work with children.

I've seen your other thread about college. Why don't you take this year to try and suss out what it really is you want to do? This could be viewed as an opportunity. If you spend this year working out exactly what it is you want to do you will most probably be much more motivated and directed by the time comes to re-enroll in college if you choose to.

The other thing is you do seem to be setting your sights a bit low. You seem to be applying for a lot of jobs in shops etc. Nothing wrong with this at all (I'd love to stack shelves and make things neat!)If you want to be in a caring profession it would be best to apply for jobs which are focused on this. It would boost your CV no end and give you a head start. You also seem depressed, and I was thinking, these jobs may take a bit longer to find, but this might give you the time to start feeling better. A good, fulfilling job might give you an extra boost too.

Basically what I am trying to say is it would be worth searching for a good, fulfilling job that may help you in your future career path rather than jumping on the first job you can find. Have you tried any places with special needs kids? This kind of work can be incredibly rewarding, and would look excellant on your CV for childrens training, or SALT as well (You may be likely to work with some children with swallowing difficulties). One last thing, if you were to be able to get on to a hospital bank, you would have the extra flexibility to work a shift when you could if and when you start college, which could bring in valuable extra money.

I hope this has encouraged you a bit! And that I haven't completely overwhelmed you with my rabbiting. I think you have a real opportunity this year Nutty, to sort out what you would like to do and find some fulfilling direction. I hope you start to feel better and that everything works out for you.

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 10:07

Thanks Flossam and you are right. I am going to take the opportunity now this year to do two things 1) Have driving lessons and 2) research any course that even remotly interests me to see if i would really like it.

Then hopefully next year i can make an informed desiscion about it all and will have the advantage of being able to drive to college

OP posts:
tiredemma · 22/09/2004 10:11

nutty, ask everyone ie your mom, dad , bro, dp etc to pay for one driving lesson each as a xmas pressie, that way you cant get out of it and it will at least give you a start on the road, we will soon see you tearing around sutton!!

nutcracker · 22/09/2004 10:13

Yeah i think i will do that Emma, thats a good idea.

Think it will really make me feel alot better if i have a bit more independance.

I long to go and shop at Asda in the middle of the night (how sad is that)

OP posts:
tiredemma · 22/09/2004 10:16

best time to shop, no doddering old people blocking aisles nattering away about the young of today,!
