O.k I really need a job. I am sick and tired of being broke all the time and with xmas coming up I am starting to panic as usual.

I have absolutly no experiance of anything (well apart from cleaning hotel rooms), and no qualifications either.

I don't drive either which limits things even more.

Have just spent the last few days searching every shop i can think of, hospitals e.t.c

Am not sure really if i will be any better off once i've paid for childcare but even if i'm a tenner a week better off that would help.

Anyone have any ideas of places i could try ???

shops are looking for seasonal staff already. ive been on the look out too. or if you fancy a job in an office, then what i do is just put on my cv that i use the computer alot, and know how to use the internet and word and excel etc. plus time yourself and see how many words you can type in a minute. they like fast paced typers. do you have anything in mind?

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 17:01

Well if you work 16+ hrs a week you can get the WTC childcare element to help with childcare and have you looked in the local paper for jobs, even things like cleaning etc.

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 17:03

Well i wouldn't mind shop work i supose.

I did try the local hospital for jobs as a HCA but nothing, shame to cos that would have been good experiance for my course.

Suppose I could contact some hotels to see if they have any room attendat vacancies, but i really hated that when i did it before.

Need somewhere pretty flexible too as i have college on tuesdays and obviously the kids too.

My friend works at ELC and she is going to speak to her manager for me but i applied there last year and didn't even get an interview.

What about M&S, Monsoon (Accessorize in Sutton I think), ELC, Beatties, Asda, Toys R Us, etc. Cadbury's Distribution centre is right by you too isn't it, or what about the hospitals.

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 17:07

Yeah have been scanning the local papers all week and looked on the internet.

Your right WK it would have to be 16 hrs or more.

Am a bit worried though that they will chop my tax credits down a lot if i start work and then i'll be no better off iykwim.

Tammybear this site may be of use to you here

For a quick buck I sell a pile of the kids unwanted clothes and toys on Ebay. So I thought id suggest that as it seems to be a quick buck your after! Good Luck though Nutty!

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 17:09

Have tried Monsoon Jampot and a few of the others.

Some of them said that they will be recruiting in about a mth or so for xmas, but ideally i want something sooner than that and something permamnant.

thanks nutcracker. working 16 hours will benefit you more as ull get working tax credit. child tax credit wont be affected. im only having to pay £20 of dd's nursery fees a week, where as usually id have to pay £66 if not.

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 17:12

Oh right, thats good TB.

I worked out roughly what i'd get for 20 hrs and then the childcare and the childcare was alot more.

Would like a job in a nursery but can't find any willing to employ unqualified staff.

Found one willing to train me but then i would only get training allowance not actually proper pay and i would have had to work tuesdays.

Nutcracker, do you live in Sutton Coldfield?? don't know whether you're interested but M&S have vacancies for Customer Assistants, but temporary vacancies only. Search under recruitment on www.marksandspencer.com. BTW don't be put off by temporary vacancies, some do become permanent. HTH

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 17:14

Oh i would love to work sundays , thats got be good right ???

TB just remembered, how did your interview go ???

my local nursery (the one dd is going to go to) was advertising for unqualified staff as i did think of applying for it but then it got taken up quick u might get lucky if u keep trying

tammybear · 19/09/2004 17:16

wont know til mid week. think it went okay. ended up wearing all black lol. but left my coat on so i wouldnt look too weird as all black just doesnt suit me

tamum · 19/09/2004 17:17

I have a friend who's son got a job taking tours around Cadbury World without any experience, but maybe that's too far away from you. I agree with LMB, it's definitely worth considering temporary employment because the chances of you getting kept on are fairly good. I would also be inclined to think of somewhere like John Lewis where you could get discounts in the run-up to Christmas

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 17:24

Just had a quick look on the M&S website and there are a couple i could apply for. Am going to do it later when Ds isn't screaming at me.

Thanks LMB

oh good - if I think of anything else I'll let you know

lavender1 · 19/09/2004 18:16

Hi Nutcracker...I know this sort of work sounds boring (but isn't that bad really) could you work at your local Tesco's, Sainsbury's and other big stores...they are always crying out for mothers to fit in with the school hours (I did it for 2 years before gardening and it worked well and have made friends there too!)...good luck

lavender1 · 19/09/2004 18:18

btw forgot to mention as long as you are good with people, helpful etc and can demonstarte to them at interview stage how you would deal with a few problems, like awkward customers and stuff like that...you should be fine.

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 18:47

nutty - you should defo be better off working because you'd still get CTC, would get WTC too, and the childcare element - 70% of your childcare costs and your child benefit as normal.

jampot · 19/09/2004 18:54

try here nutty

stupidgirl · 19/09/2004 20:00

I posted something very similar to this a fe months ago. I'm doing care work now. I work for Bupa as a night care assistant. I had no qualifications or experience, but they offer free training. I am in the process of completing my induction (which should have been done by 6 weeks, but I've been there nearly 3 months now...). When I've finished this I can go on to do the foundation NVQ and then the full NVQ. I can also get training in care related things like manual handling, first aid, health and safety, etc.

tammybear · 19/09/2004 20:07

r u on income support nutty? ive just worked out how much better off a week i would be if i got this job that i went to today, and its only £12 extra a week suppose its almost £50 extra a week

Flossam · 19/09/2004 20:18

You could try applying to elderly peoples homes/nursing homes in your area. They normally take on unqualified people. If the hospital dosen't actually have a vacancy for a HCA ask about their staff bank. Would they be prepared to take you on? They will train you in manual handling, health and safety and what not and may even give you a shift where you are shadowing to give you an idea how everything works. This type of work is on an ad hoc basis, but I did ok out of it, one of the ward sisters would look through her rota and tell me when she would need me and I could agree or refuse the shifts as I wanted! Normally you would ring the bank with your availabilty and they try and find you a shift on one of the departments. HTH.

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 21:18

Thanks everyone

No TB i'm not on income support, dp works but has pretty crappy income, hence my job search.

Stupidgirl - That sounds really interesting. Thinking about it, nights would probably be good for me to as I could drop the kids at school, Ds at nursery and then go home to bed.
Is it in a hospital or a old peoples home ???
We do have a Bupa hosptial somewhere near to here i think.
