O.k I really need a job. I am sick and tired of being broke all the time and with xmas coming up I am starting to panic as usual.

I have absolutly no experiance of anything (well apart from cleaning hotel rooms), and no qualifications either.

I don't drive either which limits things even more.

Have just spent the last few days searching every shop i can think of, hospitals e.t.c

Am not sure really if i will be any better off once i've paid for childcare but even if i'm a tenner a week better off that would help.

Anyone have any ideas of places i could try ???

Bugger the job search on the Bupa website isn't working.

I'll have to try again tommorow.

Stupidgirl - Can I ask a really nosey question and ask roughly how much you get paid for doing nights ???

They have jobs at Ann Summers . No i couldn't do it, i'd die of embarresment.

Dp is quite keen on the idea though (surprise surprise)

nutty, DD2 is currently working as an unqualified care assistant in a care home. She only has evening shifts atm (5-10) and gets around £5 an hour - a bit more I think but I'm not sure exactly.

Sainsburys and Tesco have quite a good hourly rate (better than that) and have all sorts of shifts, esp in the 24-hour stores.

If you could work evenings/nights when DP is home it would be more convenient and cheaper too!

stupidgirl · 19/09/2004 22:18

Nutty, the pay isn't great - I get £5.58 an hour (it's the same for days and nights), it's slightly more for a saturday night, but not much. There's no enhancement for overtime or bank holidays or anything.

Flossam · 19/09/2004 22:26

Pay might be better than that on the staff bank. especially for nights. Thats crap Stupidgirl! I'd look out for another place that might pay more if I were you! Although thinking back when I was 16 and working in a residential home I think my hourly rate was 2.50!!

Jennisaurus · 19/09/2004 23:13

Nutty said it before say it again, care assistant in a residential home. I KNOW you are not keen on looking after older people, but honestly its not as bad as people think, and its the closest to nursing you can get. Its what I did before I got into my current job.
Don't look for job vacancies, just go through the phone book and ring them all

Ditto stupidgirl on the basic qualifications that you get working there. Manuel handing, and first aid are invaluable IMO.

Jennisaurus · 19/09/2004 23:15

Oh and recently looking at jobs in homes my wage would have been £5.50 an hr, but that includes NVQ enhancement, and senior staff extra. I make about £6 an hr working as a HCA.

jampot · 19/09/2004 23:18

Aldi pay about £8.00 for till staff but you have to remember all the prices.

stupidgirl · 19/09/2004 23:34

I know it's rubbish pay, but I really like the job. Sure I have wipe bottoms and the like, but it is sooo rewarding. You become really attached to the residents and that makes it all seem worthwhile.

I find the job really tough, emotionally, especially on the nights I'm working with people who's attitude I don't respect, and it can be hard when the residents get upset, but I love my job.

stupidgirl · 19/09/2004 23:34

Just not the hours...

JanH · 20/09/2004 09:24

stupidgirl, that's exactly how dd2 feels - she doesn't mind the bottom-wiping, she loves all the old dears, she says they're just like children (in the nicest way) and the naughty ones make her laugh.

jampot mentioned Aldi, Lidl pay high hourly rates too and they have scanning tills (do Aldi really not, jampot?) but they operate with very few staff and that makes it quite high-pressure from what I've seen when shopping.

charliecat · 20/09/2004 09:51

Nutty are you anywhere near where Lucy works could she not but a big good word in for you at her nursery or another?

jampot · 20/09/2004 13:42

Its true Janh - or at least used to be. I had an interview and was offered a job as PA to MD of Aldi about 7 years ago (at tht time £14k for about 30 hours pw). The HR lady told me about their till operatives and the fact that they are trained to "touch" all items and instantly they remember the prices. You should go in and watch for alittle bit - it is amazing the speed at which they can do it too. So generally the company pay well. I'm not surprised Lidl are the same

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 13:46

Been collecting application forms today. Have one for Clarks, ELC and The Entertainer.

Just been on the tax credit web site though and it appears i'll actually be worse off

Charliecat - I wish, i'd love to work with Lucy, but she works right over the other side of the city to me.

I'm not being ageist seriously but i just could not do bottom wiping, well not old folk anyway. Kids fine, old people No sorry.

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 13:48

Unfortunatly we haven't got an Aldi or Lidls that close to here. I don't mind travelling but it would increase how much childcare i needed if i had to go that far.

Can't believe i would be worse off.

Damned if i do and damned if i don't.

fio2 · 20/09/2004 13:49

how about in a pub? either kitchen work or bar work?

easily done around dh's job and family life

fio2 · 20/09/2004 13:50

I have done care home work aswell and it is very rewarding even if it is low paid

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 13:51

Don't you need to be mega confident for that Fio ???

Am getting annoyed with myself now, i'm being to picky aren't I ???

OP posts:
fio2 · 20/09/2004 13:52

I worked as a kitchen assistant/waitress and some 'occasional' bar work and I am NOT mega confident at all, infact I have a real blushing problem!

nutcracker · 20/09/2004 13:55

Hmmm god i'm hopeless at this.

clairabelle · 20/09/2004 14:01

Nutty, I've had a look on the Bupa website for you there's nothing for unqualified staff in the Midlands. Which are your local hospitals? Is it Good Hope?

fio2 · 20/09/2004 14:02

also my friend does nhs direct and she had no experience or qualifications maybe i shouldnt be saying this!

JanH · 20/09/2004 14:03

I couldn't do the bum wiping either, nutty

I am very impressed that dd2 can!

fio2 · 20/09/2004 14:04

I think you just forget about it in all honesty janh! and the one I worked at they provided gloves, which was better

clairabelle · 20/09/2004 14:05

Is it nursing you want to do Nutty or SALT I can't remember which you said.
