Would anyone be interested in a book club thread?

The vague idea at present would be to choose a book at the start of the month, and then discuss after a couple of weeks or so. I have no previous experience of Book Clubs so if anyone has, or has any pointers about how it could work virtually, they'd be very welcome!

The first book suggested is 'When We Were Orphans' by Kazuo Ishiguro.

What does everyone think?

Have read Remains of the day (long time ago) but could read this. Yes, I'm interested in a book club thread.

I'd love to join in. The only problem is it takes me ages to read a book now (for reasons that I am sure will be obvious to many other Mums), so could you be generous with the deadlines?

I'd be interested but would need to know what sort of books people plan on putting forward for reading.

Mainly because I think DW is getting to the end of her tether about my book buying sprees (1500 seperate novels is not too much is it?).

I'd be interested, but it takes me ages to read a book usually (not to mention I have to wait for the postal service to finish playing football with the Amazon parcel and get round to delivering it!). How long do others take? Can anyone suggest the second book so I can get going on that??

Perhaps we could save ourselves a lot of bother and just have a Wine Club

The Book and Bottle Club - might take a few bottles for me to really develop an opinion on any given vintage though.

And me - but am slow reader as well these days. Might just pretend I've read it and agree with everyone

that'll teach me to skim the thread - I see we have other slow readers too - do we have a timeframe? (and love the wine idea)

I'd like to join in too, please, but it would probably be sporadic as it's hard to get new books out here and v v expensive.

I'd suggest we give ourselves at least a month to read a book, to allow everyone a chance to finish it. Or maybe we could decide on three or six books at a time, just so we have a bit more warning?

I've belonged to RL book groups for years. My last one had a 'book choosing' evening each year (with wine and food, of course) and then a book was allocated to each month of the year, except over the summer. For something different at Christmas we chose a theme, rather than a book, and we'd bring along a poem, a quotation, a passage from a book - anything so long as it related to the theme. We had wine and food at that, too!

Great minds think alike on the book & wine front. Love the idea of everyone getting online with a glass for a chat, Pamina!

SueDonim - the idea of having several books a month sounds good. Those who don't have time to read much could just pick one, while speedreaders could have a go at several. How about a choice of 5? Different genres and lengths etc. Any suggestions alongside Kazuo Ishiguro, anyone?

Then maybe people who want to post early could use spoilers, or give a discussion date eg 1st of September for this month's books. Sounds a long way off but August will go very quickly!

Oh and SimonHoward - ever heard of libraries? Big buildings just FULL of books! (don't know how to do the smiley/winky face)

I am interested too although like Suedonim, it may be sporadic. Have already read "When we were orphans" so have a head start.

I've been thinking about what sort of books people might recommend. I read a lot of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century classics when I was younger, and would happily re-read any of them. I don't know so much about modern novels, but in the past few years I've particularly enjoyed the Pat Barker World War I trilogy, The English Patient, Last Orders (both of which I read only after seeing the films). I think these were all Booker winners or runners-up. I don't like science fiction or horror. It would be good to have a mixture of old and new novels, I think. what do the rest of you think?

Anyone watch the Book Club on tele? I bet we're all more glamerous, witty and intelleigent than that lot were! Any footballers wives out there?

hmmm lots of good suggestions - think we should nominate a "chair" each month just to make things clear. First month should be bettys obviously - what do you think betty?

ks - I just bought Atonement (haven't read any other of his stuff), so maybe that wasn't such a good choice. I'd love to be in on a Book Club, so long as I can dip in and out - I have to really fancy a book to read it, so may opt out of some if that would be allowed. I'm off to order When We Were Orphans on Amazon....

I'd love to be involved too- reading 's about the only thing I have energy for these days!
