Are you 'obsessed with celebrity'?

this 'national obsession with celebrity' .. is it real or is it a media driven farce

I personally have no desire to be famous .. ever .. have no desire to watch or read about celebrities, even major Hollywood stars. Most people I know are pretty aligned with this lack of interest

so how come tv screens and 'news' are still filled with trite about minor people with no talent?

what twig said. With bells on.

Having said that dh and I watch lots of non-intellectual t.v. - criminal minds, bones, New Tricks, The West Wing (so good it's almost intellectual!) and I love neighbours

LoveAngel · 04/06/2007 18:36

forgive my eratic (ie. shit) typing

LucyJones · 04/06/2007 18:36

Yes, I love shows like Lost, Heroes , Bones and Desperate Houswives.
But will aslo watch Big Brother.
It's possible to do this and still not be thick

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:37

I only watch university challenge and castigate all panellists for getting the answers wrong.

LucyJones · 04/06/2007 18:37

I would also like to point out that the mistakes are typos in my posts, not crap spelling just in case anyone else would like another reason to call me thick

LucyJones · 04/06/2007 18:38

donnie, I thought you didn't have a telly

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:39

oh damn - you got me.

I go to my neighbour's house - who is of course an oxford don.

LucyJones · 04/06/2007 18:40
Grin
Desiderata · 04/06/2007 18:41

Ah, Lucy. I'm only having a larf

I'm not accusing you of being thick ... I said it was a thick thing to do. I do many thick things in any given day.

That said, are you going to counter-argument that watching BB is an intelligent thing to do?

Twiglett · 04/06/2007 18:41

Bones would be better if she didn't have such thin lips and unappealing face, don't you think?

Twiglett · 04/06/2007 18:42

a bit of collagen that's what she needs

ne'er mind the fact she can act

LOL

She's a strange one, alright. I like the programme, though.

WanderingTrolley · 04/06/2007 18:44
  1. Watching BB and thinking contestants are thick. (correct, usually)
  1. Watching BB and thinking contestants are multi-faceted complex and charismatic characters, and you would benefit from emulating them. (you are thick)

  2. Watching BB in the pretence of irony and in total denial about how addicted you are. (you are a twat, alas)

  3. Watching BB because you miss It's A Knockout and you like seeing preening wannabes covered in goo. (entirely acceptable)

All different things, imo.

But making it your life for the next 3 months: thick. Or Davina McCall.

wannaBe · 04/06/2007 18:46

but big brother isn't entertainment. The people that go on it are freaks. All striving to be the most outragious, to do the most daring thing and for what? so that they can come out and get rich? There is nothing inteligent about big brother, there are far better ways to escape the realities of life than to watch a bunch of weirdoes, who are supposed to be a reflection of society, in their desperate attempt to become famous. It is the people that watch this crap that ensure that these freaks become celebrities. If people didn't watch it, then these people would disappear back where they came from.

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:46

now Davina McCall....she really IS thick....

wannaBe · 04/06/2007 18:49

and rich. again, sad reflection...

how many inteligent celebrities are there...?

wannaBe · 04/06/2007 18:50

nothing wrong with a bit of escapism, but I sincerely pity anyone whose life is that bad that their only escape from it is big brother. unless they just watch it so they can make themselves feel better by knowing that at least they're not like the people that go on there

WanderingTrolley · 04/06/2007 18:55

wannabe I think it's a lonely ship of Fry and Laurie ... with the odd Python. French and Saunders. Eddie Izzard.

You have to be clever to be funny, right?

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:55

I think Bob Geldof is an intelligent celebrity but he would probably say he dislikes celebrity anyway. He certainly doesn't court it which is more than I can say for that naughty little Peaches.

Desiderata · 04/06/2007 19:00

There has to be a distinction though, doesn't there, between celebrities and famous people.

A line must be drawn in the sand, because I am interested in famous people and their achievements, but members of girl/boy bands, super models (unless exceptionally super), and big brother contestants are surely below the radar of a normally functioning human being?

DANCESwithnewlytannedlegs · 04/06/2007 19:02

At the risk of my lips becoming welded to Twig's arse...

I soooo agree, Emily Deschanel (sp?) - her off bones, CANNOT act. I do have a new found soft spot for David Himoffbuffy

Lucy - we are watching Heroes (a few weeks behind so don't tell me anything) but it's starting to p*ss me off that there are so many questions and no answers and I also find Sylar's eyebrows very disturbing...worse than his cutting off heads to do nasty things with brains habit...

ArtichokeTagine · 04/06/2007 19:04

I am in my late twenties, went to a top university and have a good career. Most of my friends are the same. We all talk about celebrities. We all love trash TV. Its not an obsession but it is a part of our social chit chat.

However we also all talk about politics and the theatre. We all read broadsheet newspapers and most subscribe to the Economist or Prospect. I am also rather partial to the Archers.

I think that maybe it is a generational thing. Events like Big Brother bring people of my generation together in a way that is rare in the multi-channel era. I do not think it is an indication of intelligence. Actually caring about celebrities might be... but talking about them is normal IMO.

Twiglett · 04/06/2007 19:06

if its a generational thing .. may I ask why .. what picques your interest in a group of nonenties doing embarrassing things?
