Only instructions being "erm, fruit and veg, salady bits, erm crisps and choc, erm kitchen roll?"

apparently I am lucky he is so "good" according to people

well I say, he is 36 fgs, of course he should know a pepper from his elbow

are men supposed to be helpless at the thought of buying FOOD?????

no they are not supposed to be helpless but it woul often seem that way

dp frequently adds in savoury fatty stuff that he likes but no-one else does, such as pate, then forgets the cereals for the morning!!!

ludaloo · 03/06/2007 20:51

Hell no!!!! He couldn't even do the weekly shop with a list! He "doesn't do" supermarkets

NikkiBFG · 03/06/2007 20:52

Huh! I was at my mums recently and before I came back, I text DH

So, what's the food situation like?

He text me back an inventory of the fridge....I left it and thought lets see what he does....he goes shopping...totally incomplete shop ie stir fry with no sauce, chicken etc...I ask him

why didn't you look in cupboards before you went

Oh I couldn't be bothered and anyway, you are the food committee...its your job to do a list....

Need I say more....

maisiedaisy · 03/06/2007 20:52

Yes I have trained my DH well!

Jojay · 03/06/2007 20:52

I can't do the weekly shop without a list.............. I forget half the stuff I need if I don't have one !!!

magnolia1 · 03/06/2007 20:53

My dh does the weekly shop all the time. I haven't done food shopping for about 2 years

DeviousDaffodil · 03/06/2007 20:53

DH can't even do 'bits' without a list.

BabiesInBedsGalore · 03/06/2007 20:53

oh absolutely.
but hed get what he thinks we need. and that invariably differs somewhat from what i think we need.

weebleswobble · 03/06/2007 20:53

He could do it but it would cost me twice as much and he would think he was doing me a favour bringing me a gooey dessert (and one for himself).

Rachmumoftwo · 03/06/2007 20:54

DH loses the list before he gets home so I can't check it against the shopping. If there is something missing I have no proof I wrote it down- clever hey!

Katymac · 03/06/2007 20:56

Dh saves 30-40% of what I would spend

He makes out a shopping list (I do a menu)

Buys it all - making sensible variation when things are on offer eg we can have tuna pasta instead of ham - as tuna was on special offer

Buys and keeps track of multibuys eg we have chicken breasts in the freezer from 3 weeks ago so I won't buy any this week

I hate him (he's a virgo)

No, he can't go round the village for bread, milk and a paper without a list!

oliveoil · 03/06/2007 20:58

I didn't think it was unusual (or I hoped)

and he got me an eclair

my dp can do the shopping without a list, and come back with exactly what we needed.

i,on the other hand, cant cope without a list, and still end up getting extra stuff'cos it was BOGOF' or whatever

Pollyanna · 03/06/2007 21:00

my dh could buy food etc, but forgets about other things we might need - like loo-rolls and cat food . I do the shop by the internet and he thinks I am completely extravagant and buy things I don't need (in fact he gave me a list this morning of things we don't need). He doesn't buy enough when he does the shop as he trys to save money

He would also buy beer, pork pies and doritos which aren't on my menu plan

MadamePlatypus · 03/06/2007 21:00

Oooh yes - we'd have to take out a second mortgage though

wrinklytum · 03/06/2007 21:04

DP went and did the shopping today as had been on nights.

Did not do too badly but I noticed a definite escalation in the amount of beer in the trolley, ditto sweets and crisps!!!

Got most of the essentials but DID forget baby wipes....ah well,at least he tried:O

PinkTulips · 03/06/2007 21:06

no.

i doubt he could do it with a list tbh.... unless the list went something like this;

milk (in the red and white packet, right at the back of the shop)
sugar (aisle 4, we buy the cheapest one)
mince (top shelf in the meat section, must be 400g or more)
apples (check them to make sure they're not bruised please!)
spaghetti (1kg bag of own brand stuff, in the aisle opposite the frozen pizzas)
etc, etc....

even then he'd come back and say he couldn't find apples because i hadn't told him where to look!

TheArmadillo · 03/06/2007 21:08

dp would spend twice what I do on a weeks worth of shopping and come back with roughly one and a half day's worth of food. And it would mostly be junk food or would all go out of date the next day.

He's not much better with a list.

He also would not buy anything that wasn't food (toilet rolls, washing powder etc.).

He often comes with me to do the shopping though.

dyzzidi · 03/06/2007 21:08

PMSL DH probably couldn't do it with a list. We would all be on cheese on toast ham sandwiches and trifles.

If i take him with me my bill shoots up about £40.00. He buys rump steak to casserole with and only buys the best cuts of meat , most expensive of everything and he drives me daft.

On the plus side i normally pay for the food but if he is with me he will pay for it.

lisad123 · 03/06/2007 21:11

In one word NO!!!
Would come back with half missing and loads of stuff i dont need

Peachy · 03/06/2007 21:12

god no, we go together so he'd get some right but he'd come bach chuffed at a reduced bill and totally missing essentials like washing stuff, lunches etc

i remember when i was a kid mum sending dad to do it, he blew twice the budget on cakes and then sent them home in a taxi,m he went and got drunk before facing the wrath of Mother

Lact8 · 03/06/2007 21:21

When I read the title I thought that a MNer had seen my DP in the supermarket earlire today, wielding the huge list I had sent him!

I hate it when he does the shopping. He nearly gets it right but the few things where he does pick up the wrong stuff drive me irrationally crazy.

I write the list in the order that he will go past them.

Big bonus is he sticks to the list rigidly and the bill is always less than when I do the shopping

Today I wrote the list while at the bootom the garden where the DC where playing and I couldn't remember which coffee I had bought last time and couldn't be arsed to climb all the steps to look in the cupboard so I wrote 'Strong, dark, expensive, fairtrade coffee'

He bought Mellow Birds!?!?!
