Only instructions being "erm, fruit and veg, salady bits, erm crisps and choc, erm kitchen roll?"

apparently I am lucky he is so "good" according to people

well I say, he is 36 fgs, of course he should know a pepper from his elbow

are men supposed to be helpless at the thought of buying FOOD?????

No, but then neither could I (I write lists from a weekly menu plan, but if I don't put the regulars on as well I'll tend to forget them). But I know what I want when I write 'chicken', he needs 'chicken - free range breasts, skin on, large as possible'. Bit like PinkTulips' DH, though I don't think I would need to remind him to check the apples for bruises. I might need to add 'please don't bring home enough chocolate to keep 3,000 pre-menstrual women happy, it depresses me'.

Guitargirl · 03/06/2007 21:50

DP does all the shopping in our house (no list) and takes DD with him to give me a break and walks to the supermarket and back as we have no car.

Am feeling a bit guilty now .

UCM · 03/06/2007 21:51

no

UnquietDad · 03/06/2007 21:51

I don't do supermarkets either.
That's why we do the weekly shop online. And I do it. Always.

magnolia1 · 03/06/2007 21:52

Guitargirl don't feel gulty, mine takes all 5 kids sometimes and then comes home, unpacks and does me breakfast (he goes at 6am!!)

unknownrebelbang · 03/06/2007 21:56

Sounds a gem Magnolia.

DH can and does. He'd never do a list, but would take one with him if I did (I rarely do).

Don't think he'd do an online shop though.

Toothyboy · 03/06/2007 21:57

Probably. But would also end up buying a widescreen TV and a lawnmower !

UnquietDad · 03/06/2007 22:06

The great thing about online shopping is that you have a list automatically - just go to Favourites! I must admit I am a List person and find "intuitive" shopping quite hard.

unknownrebelbang · 03/06/2007 22:09

oh I'm sure he could do it...just he wouldn't.

(He'd have to force me off here for a start, lol).

StinkyPete · 03/06/2007 22:09

not a chance,
but then I don't attempt to these days either!!

SelfishMoo · 03/06/2007 23:31

Mine does the shopping very frequently, and is reliable and organised!

Shame he's so untidy at home, then

handlemecarefully · 03/06/2007 23:36

No he couldn't - but then that may be because I am too specific and inflexible about what I want

fussymummy · 03/06/2007 23:42

If my partner went shopping he'd get all the things he liked!!
Seems to forget that we have 3 kids that need feeding as well!
Or that i have to make lunch boxes every day and need food to put in them.

If i give him a list, he'll get most of whats on it.
He always thinks hes saving money when he buys value items, most of which we don't like.
I end up going again!

Sometimes i think hes useless on purpose!!!!

JoolsToo · 03/06/2007 23:45

easily

we both shop and always ask each other 'can you think of anything we need?'

Never have lists

Twinklemegan · 03/06/2007 23:47

Not if I wanted him to spend less than £70. The concept of looking for offers and buying whatever's the best value just passes him by completely.

Tigana · 03/06/2007 23:47

DH does weekly shop. I am there too, but I trail around/skip on ahead to grab stuff like shampoo and washing powder. He does it all with no list.
He also does all the cooking...is this connected?

Twinklemegan · 03/06/2007 23:48

Definitely connected Tigana. DH would buy ready made everything.

PinkTulips · 04/06/2007 09:53

definitely tigana.... dp can't cook therefore has no idea how to shop for actual food, he'd live on rashers and ready meals if i wasn't around

LoveAngel · 04/06/2007 10:59

He does the weekly shop quite a lot, actually, and he doesn't do a bad job - although he buys a lot more red meat, wine and expensive, pointless stuff than I would (packs and packs of fresh tagliatelle - why???). In general, though, he's not a bad shopper my DH.

MinW · 04/06/2007 11:12

My DH often does the weekly shop. He insists on walking up and down every single aisle so that he doesn't miss anything. Goes without a list as he knows better than me what is in the fridge and often issues me with instructions on what I need to buy and what I should cook with it. He used to do all the cooking, but now that we have DS I hand him the baby as soon as he comes through the door and I make dinner. Not sure if I am lucky or not .

Lizzylou · 04/06/2007 11:13

NO way, he always underorders and we'd be living on wierd things like Tacos and bananas.

sparklesandwine · 04/06/2007 11:21

DP is so much better at food shopping than me and manages to do it in half the time and cost so therefore he goes and i just get a few bits as and when if we need them - its lovely he even puts it away too!

hana · 04/06/2007 11:23

dh is also better at shopping than me - he always complains that I've spent xx amount and there is nothing to eat!!
But we mostly do online now and jsut go in for a few bits now and then

munz · 04/06/2007 11:27

DH can do it on his own yes if I write a list - but he picks things up exactly in the order of the list so rather than get the fruit and veg together if the veg is 2/3 rows below he'll go to the other side of the super market and come back - weird man! lol. have to write a list witht eh layout in mind.

he doesn't normally get the normal stuff I do - he is a sucker for the bogofs and 2 for 1's etc. lol.

madmarchhare · 04/06/2007 11:29

lol, I have just seen my friends DH in the supermarket with a list. She has also put the weights of stuff as not to confuse him too much.

I sent DH off many moons ago to get 'a few bits, y'know, bread, milk, orange juice...'. He came back with bread, milk and orange juice...nothing else.
