Only instructions being "erm, fruit and veg, salady bits, erm crisps and choc, erm kitchen roll?"

apparently I am lucky he is so "good" according to people

well I say, he is 36 fgs, of course he should know a pepper from his elbow

are men supposed to be helpless at the thought of buying FOOD?????

I need a list myself when I go shopping else vital items get forgotten. Dh would cope as well as me without a list. He'd have a general idea of what to buy.

When he does go shopping it is me who ends up completing the list. It's like it hasn't sunk in that we are a family of four.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 04/06/2007 11:55

i snet DH to the shops yesterday with a list. keep in mind that he and i ususally do the shopping together but as DS has gotten to an awkward shpping age he now has to do it alone (i don't drive)
ANYWAY! i asked him to get me some DOVE deodorant. he phoned me to check that it was just the regualr kind. yes, says i, the one witht he dark blue lid. he comes home with rollon. i have never in my life used a rollon.
he says he doesn't pay attention to that kind of thing. do I know what he uses?
so i said: well, you used to use sure sport aerosol but you have recently changed to the rollon. so there.

he also bought light butter. WTF??

Bamzooki · 04/06/2007 12:02

Yes my dh could do the food shop, and would get all items listed, but it would take him about 4 hours, and would also have bought nearly one of everything, especially if we haven't had it before because 'it looked interesting', and will have spent nearly a months wages in there.
On occasions he stops in a Costco - and comes back laden with so much stuff we have difficulty storing it all. Fine for dried/canned food that we actually use, but trays of soft fruit/cakes etc are no way going to get used up in time.
Consequently it is much preferable for our bank account if I dive in there for 30 mins in between finishing work and doing the school run!

Ceolas · 04/06/2007 12:03

Well I'm sure we could eat what he brought back. But without a list, both of us would spend far too much and forget things.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 04/06/2007 12:16

LMAO at the prospect of DH doing a weekly shop! Or anything else apart from his paid employment.

CountessDracula · 04/06/2007 12:16

yes defo

ekra · 04/06/2007 13:31

The men who can't get to grips with the art of supermarket shopping.... how did they survive before they got married?

fannyannie · 04/06/2007 13:33

well I do my weekly shopping with a list - so it only seems 'normal' to me for DH to do it with a list too........too easy to forget things that may not be 'weekly' but regular items.

happystory · 04/06/2007 13:37

Well dh does the majority of our cooking (especially at weekends) so yes he can! He decides pretty much what we're eating and what to get. Only things on a list would be stuff we'd run out of that he might not know about, household stuff etc.

portonovo · 04/06/2007 14:17

Why would you do it without a list? I can see someone popping in for a bit of fruit and milk without a list, but for a proper shop for a few days' meals and to stock up anything we were low on, I would always take a list. So yes, my husband does take a list.

portonovo · 04/06/2007 14:18

Also, we don't buy the same things every week, although of course some things come up often, so a list is fairly essential.

ElenyaTuesday · 04/06/2007 14:30

DH insists on doing the grocery shopping but I do most of the cooking. He doesn't believe in lists so every evening is like Ready Steady Cook for me!!!!!!

WigWamBam · 04/06/2007 14:42

Yes, he can. And usually does - he does the weekly shop, not me.

It generally involves bringing home far more red wine than is good for him though ...

bananabump · 04/06/2007 14:51

Hmm... my dp has never been to the supermarket without me so I have no idea! He always comes with me I think he knows mostly what I buy, but I think his mind would go blank when he got there.

As it is I have to virtually beg him to grab a bag of sugar or bottle of milk when he's off to get petrol/fags for himself. And a fair few times he's come back having obviously forgotten said items, or couldn't be arsed to go to the corner shop as well as the drive through petrol thingy at asda, so he claims the shop has no bread/milk/chocolate.

That's it, I'm going to ask him to do the shop next time. If you hear any petulant roars coming form the general North West region, you'll know what it is.

bananabump · 04/06/2007 18:22

Wow. I just asked him if he'd do the shopping and he shrugged and said "yeah"

Wonders will never cease!

Peachy · 04/06/2007 19:31

Saw a fathers day card today that made me think of this- a fridge full of beer and a single tomato, with the slogan' Dad had done the shopping again'

LOL

BexieID · 05/06/2007 10:44

YES!

In fact, DF would rather I didn't go shopping with him as I put sweeties and chocolate into the trolley, lol . We usually go Saturdays and I meet him there straight from work as I have the car (work in Tesco and shop in Morrisons, lol). If e's got Tom lunched early enough, he's usually got the main bulk by the time I get there.

The last time he wen on his own he bragged that the shopping only cost £40 and not the £60-70 it usually is. Well, when I went to work that evening I found the car not in it's usual spot and with a parking ticket on it! His excuse was that he forgot to move it, but his cheap shopping trip turned into an expensive one!

lizziemun · 05/06/2007 11:22

god NO, i can't even stand coming with me. He would come back with yet other dvd which we didn't need and not what he had been sent get.

AnneJones · 05/06/2007 11:43

Mine does. It isn't rocket science. And if he forgets things, well it isn't a big deal, so do I sometimes. We all learn by doing and by taking responsibility.

brimfull · 05/06/2007 12:03

my dh is much better at shopping for food than me.
now clothes shopping is another matter

online shop ... saves countless arguments

Sixer · 05/06/2007 14:30

Yes if he is shopping to prepare A meal for us.
No, if its the weekly shop. Then I write a list and write it in order of the supermarket. This simply means he should be back in an hour and not 2.5 hours. (then he's free to do more chores)

mm22bys · 05/06/2007 16:14

My DH shops better than I do, he gets what's he's "supposed" to, and lots of interesting stuff as well that I wouldn't buy!

Bless him....

BettySpaghetti · 05/06/2007 16:17

DP is better at food shopping than me.

I go with a list and if its not on the list I forget to buy it, even the obvious like bread and milk. I also get distracted by goodies
