i've seen two news reoports of different ones

cotswold legbar chicks both times

one wsa a farmers daughter who had an incubator

and the other a little lad who0 had quite a few tries

i think thye breed must be hard to tell girls from boys!

ska · 17/05/2007 13:00

that's interesting - wondered about trying it! we have an incubator and an always broody hen

Possibly showing my ignorance here but aren;t girl hens kept well away from boy hens so eggs can't be fertilized?

ska · 17/05/2007 13:50

well yes that what i thought but someone mentioned it yesterday on another thread and i just wondered about it. i suppose there may be a small chance with free range?

I think free range hens sometimes meet a rogue rampant rooster and the result is the patter of tiny feet! Bit like life really!

ska · 17/05/2007 13:54

indeed . but if anyone has ever done it I'd love to know!

newlifenewname · 17/05/2007 14:24

Tesco eggs will hatch too according to certain chickeny type forums I may have used

It only takes for a cock to get in you know! fnar...

ska · 17/05/2007 16:02

i imagine that if it possible anyone's would. but with waitrose of course you know what kind of chickens they ought to be as they name their eggs!

OP posts:
newlifenewname · 17/05/2007 16:33

You don't have to wait weeks to see if they are fertile either - if you incubate them for a week and then shine a light through tem you can see if fertile. The fertile ones 'grow' read veins from the nucleus.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 17/05/2007 16:40

I think Megalegs has done or is doing this at the moment. Bump for her later...

newlifenewname · 17/05/2007 16:43

I've done this with duck eggs from my butcher.

This thread reminded me of it all so I'v eput some on to incubate this afternoon.

Maybe I could do a blog for you all, or would that be too tedious?

ska · 17/05/2007 17:05

oh no please do!
