I saw a woman in the Science Museum today, who really could only be described as having "let herself go"

Grey streaky "hanging" hair, huge arse and fat tum in grey tracky bottoms, footglove shoes, shapeless burgundy tunic top and hanging tits. She really looked like she had given up on life. In contrast, she had three dear little, divinely trendily dressed girls with her. She had obviously put a lot of thought and effort into what they were going to wear (down to the very funky hat one of them was wearing) but hadn't even spent five minutes on herself.

Why?

Exactly, that woman will probably been seen in the SCience Museum with hergrand children at 70 very happy & still wearing Footgloves.

Maybe she feels there's a certain type of man out there for her and prefers to wait.

Why was I being sexist, Xenia? If it had been a man dressed in the same way, I'd have thought "Dear G-d!" and probably posted about that as well. And would probably have had quite a different reaction.

Spidermama, I agree, you need to come out the other side. If I turned up at work in tracky bottoms and no bra I'd be sent home to change!

If you don't like the thread, why read it? I don't think it's any more judgemental than others I've read on Mumsnet. And as I've said (repeatedly), I was more intrigued at the contrast between her and her girls.

having been through it I would hate to think that someone would come on an internet community and bring my appearance to everyone's attention.

Foxy, yes I would. And they all have a sense of humour and would laugh too. And would say the same thing to me.

foxy there's a huge difference. This woman in the sciencemuseum is totally unidentified. None of us knows her and therefore she's not going to be hurt by this.

It's an interesting discussion about the phenomenon we've probably all seen which is women who dress their kids beautifully and pay no heed to what in God's name they look like. I've been there that's for sure.

Oh and I don't think I have any sensitive friends. Obviously I wouldn't say something like that to someone's face if I thought they were going to burst into tears, but they never have.

I'm willing to take the chance littlelapin.

Anyway who knows, we might just do her a favour if she's lurking. If I chanced upon such a thread about me, yes I'd be hurt, then angry then by God I'd do something about it. I may even feel grateful for the people who held a mirror up to me and made me look.

If I was comfortable with my dishevelled look the thread would be as water off the proverbial duck's back.

i am ASTONISHED at the utter hypocrisy of everyone that has piled into the OP.

Actually I would describe a friend like that if it was acurate. Someone phoned to accept a birthday invitation yesterday, and as I was hanging up DH, asked "who is she" and I said "the big fat one,with huge boobs, who waddles" I really like the woman, but I was being honest. I would put it more delicately to her face, of course.
Mrs Scchadenfreude is simply asking why the children were so well dressed, when in contrast the woman wasn't even weraing a bra, etc?
