Two more questions...particularly for non-churchgoers (I'm not trying to convert you), but also church goers

  1. Write down one line from the marriage ceremony.
  1. If you DON'T regularly go to a church, is there something that is a barrier to you going? (Don't worry if you want to put it's all total crap, that's fine!).

And would changing the words from things like 'And with thy spirit' to 'And also with you' make any difference?

Thank you!

foxtrot · 25/02/2007 09:49

We are gathered here together in the sight of God to witness the marriage...etc.

Family go regularly, take turns because its hard work if all the DC go I don't mind traditional or modern words, except the lords prayer, prefer the trad because that's what i was taught.

What are you up to TS?

Baysmum · 25/02/2007 09:51
  1. in sickness and in health
  2. the (often) scary people - sorry to offend anyone and also because we go surfing on sundays.
changing words would make no difference at all.
bran · 25/02/2007 09:52
  1. If anyone here knows of any reason why these two may not be married speak now, or forever hold your peace.
  1. Don't believe in God

Changing words wouldn't make any difference.

tortoiseSHELL · 25/02/2007 09:53

We are gathered here today to witness/celebrate the marriage ....

I don't really believe in any religion so I have no reason to go. Have better ways to spend my time.

No.

LaDiDaDi · 25/02/2007 09:54

With this ring I, x, do take this man/woman, tobe my lawful wedded husband/wife...

I don't believe in God and dislike the concept of organised religion.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 25/02/2007 09:55

2 and 3 ditto sunnywong

yacketyblah · 25/02/2007 09:57

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of god

Don't believe that gathering in old buildings wearing best bib on one set day a week is the natural way to give thanks and/or worship.

Language used has no bearing whatsoever.

Pickledcat · 25/02/2007 09:57
  1. Sickness and in health

  2. I don't believe in God

  3. Not at all

nearlythree · 25/02/2007 09:58
  1. With this ring I thee wed.
  1. I don't go to church b/c I am disillusioned with organised religion. The CofE is an unjust church that is not a fit place to raise a family. Other churches IME are better but as I am not really a believer in Christianity any more I don't feel the need to go. Dogma and creeds are a huge barrier for me, as is patriarchal language.
  2. But changing from archaic language to contemporary wouldn't make a lot of difference.
TrinityRhino · 25/02/2007 10:01

With this ring I thee wed....

religion seems too controlling IMHO never been attracted to it

edam · 25/02/2007 10:03
  1. With my body, I thee worship
  1. Laziness
  1. NO! The beauty of the language is important. How should we worship without beauty?

  1. With this Ring I thee wed, with my Body I thee worship
  1. Go every other Sunday
TinyGang · 25/02/2007 10:15

1 What God has put together, let no man divide.

  1. Would like to go more with the children. The only excuse I have (and it's rubbish I know) is that Sunday is the only day we get to slow down and don't have to rush out the door first thing in the morning, so we tend to 'slump'. Also, the one near us is a bit 'happy clappy' which I dislike.
  1. No. I like all the traditional things you hear in church. It's comforting and familiar.
pointydog · 25/02/2007 10:15
  1. to love in sickness andhealth, for richer for poorer
  2. there is no god
  3. no
MuffinMclay · 25/02/2007 10:21
  1. 'til death do us part
  1. Don't believe; forced to go twice every Sunday until I was 16, despite knowing I didn't believe in anything from the age of 10; I've never encountered a more bitchy, less 'christian' group of people as the old ladies at my parents' church (I'm sure that is the exception rather than the rule but it put me off).
  1. no
colander · 25/02/2007 10:28
  1. love and respect each other (but we didn't get married in church and chose our own vows so have no idea if they are in the church version
  2. don't believe in church as an institution, so nothing would induce me to cross the door
Hulababy · 25/02/2007 10:31
  1. Write down one line from the marriage ceremony.

For better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health

  1. If you DON'T regularly go to a church, is there something that is a barrier to you going?

Not that I don't believe, just I don't feel I need to go to church to believe.

  1. And would changing the words from things like 'And with thy spirit' to 'And also with you' make any difference?

No

MiaWallace · 25/02/2007 10:34
