DS is sick, what would a good Italian mum cook for him? First time he is properly sick, I need to cook him something, even if he might not eat it...

oh no, poor dd, how old is she again? is she feeling all right? doctors are the same everywhere I take it...

Rosa5 · 28/04/2007 12:34

She is 13 months poor thing. The best thing was they held us in hosp until we saw the orthopedic chap who said no need for an x ray as she is moving it fine. I know that there is no treatment at her age but when a huge bruise and a lump came up then my dd's doc confirmed what we thought.
Anyway so far no vomiting today and she has eaten some riso in bianco now waiting to see which end it comes out of and in what form !!!

franca70 · 29/04/2007 10:27

povera piccola! (and you also rosa). How is she today?

Rosa5 · 29/04/2007 12:52

She is getting better thanks. Its a bit ironical but yesterday evening I did her brodo di pollo which is what started this thread off !! She ate it and today I gave her some of the pollo lesso, mashed potato and some carrot all seems to be going in ok ( not much)and it hasn't been thrown up so we are hoping. She is still a bit battuto and sleeping lots I had to dig out the grattugia for the apple which again has gone in in bits.
Now looking to go away next week but DH and I have agreed not booking anything until Saturday just in case !!

mediterraneo · 29/04/2007 13:58

uh where are you going rosa5? i lived in Venice for a year many years ago, on the lido in fact and a spell in a flat on the zitelle. I loved it, spent my evening gettiing drunk in a bar called Paradiso Perduto.
Does anybody know if you can freeze basil leaves? I think somebody told me you can, but not sure now.

Rosa5 · 29/04/2007 17:44

I have just been for a walk and walked past Paradiso Perduto!!! It used to be my last drop bar in days of my youth as to be honest it is not the cleanest of places I think the NAS have been sniffing there a few times!
No idea where we are going we are just stuck. As Montagna e fuori stagione , Spiaggia e presto as after ponte di Maggio it shuts a bit. No to Lake Garda as it would be like going back to work. Citta no grazie .. No am looking at cruises but have never been one one !!!

And I freeze Basil leaves in the winter. BUt I tend to take them off the stalks . They do go crumbly but they still taste good. When I do mozzarella ( can't eat without Basil ) I flake them in oil.

mediterraneo · 29/04/2007 19:30

E' ancora li? Quante ombre che mi sono fatta li'.....

Rosa5 · 29/04/2007 21:06

What years were you here Med ??? I only ended up in Paradiso when I was staying with a friend in Cannaregio or it was the only place left open !! as I lived in Castello we used to end up in the dive of Piccolo Martini, Olandese Volante or the Irish in Strada Nuova to name a few ! Oh those were the days

franca70 · 29/04/2007 22:28

Ah, Venezia. Le ombre. sarde in saor. (nostalgic emoticon).
How's your dd rosa? did pastina in brodo work its magic? (in my family it's known as "il riso dei malati").
Med, today I got into a weird conversation with ds about La storia di Elsa Morante. Again, I felt so nostalgica, remembering the first time I read it (I was 15, I read it while constanttly eating choc biscuits and pumpkin seeds). do you like it?I think I want to re-read it now (for possibly the 6th time)

mediterraneo · 30/04/2007 09:35

Non l'ho letto, ma ce l'ho. To be honest I think it will make me cry buckets.....I am reading Middlemarch at the moment which I love.

Rosa5 · 30/04/2007 09:47

Sarde YUK just can't stand them ..however the scampi in saor I can cope with.
DD on the mend ish she is still really whingy all the time so unlike her trying to distract her is not easy. She is eating ( little) not throwing up but her nappies are far from solid yet. No febbre and I am still trying with pasta in brodo, riso, etc etc . She has even refused a plasmon very unlike her ( I bought a kilo on offer so she can't go off them yet !)

franca70 · 30/04/2007 20:46

Rosa, are there any cruise to the croatian islands?
Pippi where have you gone?
Yes, the book is extremely moving, but I'm really considering re-reading it (just finished a not so good Carlo Fruttero's novel. shame, I loved la donna della domenica). Middlemarch, I'll put it in my to read list.
I've just started a 2 months trial on those dvd rental (thanks to a very kind mntter), I can't wait for my first dvd to arrive!

mediterraneo · 30/04/2007 20:58

amo la donna della domenica, e' splendido. mi e' pure piaciuto un altro di fruttero e lucentini ambientato a venezia, ma non mi ricordo il titolo. l'isola d'arturo della morante e' anche molto bello.

PippiLangstrump · 30/04/2007 22:45

eccomi! I had to clean the house!

poi?

PippiLangstrump · 30/04/2007 22:49

I don't like andrea de carlo... sorry! I've read two and I was so upset with his novels that I wanted to throw them away (which I never ever do with any book)! Do you like him. Have I read the wrong ones?

ah don't want 'gialli' pls.

MaryP0p1 · 01/05/2007 09:13

I had a very exciting day yesterday. Came home to find about 2/3 THOUSAND bees stuck between my window and shutters on the landing window. Yuck

franca70 · 01/05/2007 09:23

never read anything by andrea de carlo, I used to be a bit of a snob .
Donna della domenica is a giallo, but I really, really recommend it, it's a fantastic portrait of different characters, and torinese stiff upper class. Io l'ho divorato.
This is a random list of Italian novels I loved:
Antonio Tabucchi: Piazza d'Italia (feltrinelli, I think)
Sebastiano Vassalli: Marco e Mattio (Einaudi)
Anything by Natalia Ginzburg
and then Bassani, Petrolini, Silone, Calvino...
etc. I'm not an expert of "contemporary" literature, but I loved Ammaniti "Io non ho paura" and Lucarelli's gialli...
you are going to Italy??? for how long? Have fun

Rosa5 · 01/05/2007 09:23

Has anyone read any of Lorenzo Licalzi? They are quite mild to be honest and I enjoyed them ...as did my dh!

Mary pop how come the bees ?? I know that they are dying in many parts of the world were they crop spraying on anything near you?

Franca - I looked at Lake Bled in Slovenia which looked nice . But I rather fancy a Costa cruise to the greek islands. DD is better but not right yet so not booking a thing until she is 100% right . My reckoning is we will see what the weather forecast is and take it from there.

franca70 · 01/05/2007 09:24

how scary!!!!
how are things in good old le Marche? Are your children going to school there?

mediterraneo · 01/05/2007 09:25

Neanche a me e' piaciuto Andrea De Carlo, un xxglione secondo me. Li ho dati a Oxfam i suoi libri, piaceranno pure a qualcuno.

franca70 · 01/05/2007 09:27

I haven't Rosa, I'm just so ignorant of "what's going on" in Italy in general and when I go to libreria, I usually stick to the writers I know... is he any good?
Greek island hopping soiunds fantastic, go for it! May should be a perfect month for this (however, with the climate going crazy, who knows!)

mediterraneo · 01/05/2007 09:28

ahhh, ho fatto il campeggio a lake bled molti anni fa, bellissima montagna, tutto molto cheap all'epoca.
Anche a me piace Lucarelli, ho provato uno di Ammaniti, ma mi ha annoiato. Ginzburg, Pavese e Calvino9 sono bellissimi, ma di giovani non ne conosco molti.

mediterraneo · 01/05/2007 09:29

I think we are all here on the computer after the school run....

franca70 · 01/05/2007 09:31

I was a bit "sospettosa" of Ammaniti, but Io non ho paura e' veramente bello.
I don't have a clue about Italian young writers apart from Lucarelli. I think I read something by Aldo Nove, but not memorable.

franca70 · 01/05/2007 09:32

yes, and I should be washing the kitchen floor do a bit of ironing and possibly translating...
