DH1 needs a new car and is thinking about a land rover, 4x4 type of thing, really need 7 seats.

Please give points of view,

DH1 is a builder so often needs to take alot of stuff to/from work.

Also if we all go out somewhere, like to visit family at xmas , birthdays ect (i don't drive yet) there is me, DH1, my new partner, (sorry if confussing everyone) 2 kids and my mom and sometimes my sister, so we need more seats.

But i think a MPV is going to be better then a 4x4.

Mumsnet jury....

you can get an MPV without resorting to a gas guzzler you know.

kimi · 11/02/2007 17:23

This is what im trying to get accross to DH1, need help with my argument though, facts and figures.

It is.

Get a Grand Voyager - they are fabbo and I am in love with mine

kimi · 11/02/2007 17:28

I'd go for the VW Transporter converted into an MPV. Make sure the seats are easily removable for a truly versatile and reliable vehicle. It;s also not a gas guzzler and I predict that gas guzzlers in towns are going to be totally socially unacceptable very very soon. Rightly so. They're for bad people so tell your dh you're not having it.

NappiesGalore · 11/02/2007 17:45

volvo xc90 is kind of halfway house solution?

kimi · 11/02/2007 17:45

He has been looking at land rovers, they are massive, i would NEVER be able to drive it, the cost of running it will be sky high and everyone will hate us.

I like the ford galaxy but dont know if they are more friendly.

Gobbledigook · 11/02/2007 17:46

Hmmm, it's a guzzler. Ours is petrol not diesel though - that was our only mistake.

Gobbledigook · 11/02/2007 17:47

Volvo XC90 is lovely but very ££££ and the thing is, with a lot of big 7 seaters you have virtually no boot space. The GV has tons of boot even with all 7 seats up (not that I ever move any of my seats out).

kimi · 11/02/2007 17:48

Well two weeks ago he was looking at something called a bongo, (i think) im sure he thinks we are the bloody A-team!

OP posts:
kimi · 11/02/2007 17:49

Its going to have to be 2nd hand and not cost the earth.

Landrover discovery, but hey I am a country girl , go for a diesel.

2ManyPimms · 11/02/2007 22:06

I hate 4x4s with a passion!

My Ford Galaxy is just as polluting as a 4x4 so I sit here with my head hung in shame - really! I can't wait to rid myself of it!

Buy a 7 seater Renault Scenic MPV - DIESEL! The seats come out and it can hold loads of stuff!

margo1974 · 11/02/2007 22:12

Someone get a Mazda 5 and tell me what it's like.

That one has sliding doors and is an MPV

Bucketsofdynomite · 12/02/2007 08:52

I thought Landrover Defenders were for country girls and Discoveries were the Chelsea tractors.
If you only need the 7seats occasionally and don't huge a huge amount of mileage, how about Zafira, then he's got the bootspace the rest of the time and you can get a 1.4Litre one too?

LoveMyGirls · 12/02/2007 08:58

I know nothing about cars but i'm intrigued to know about your DH1 and your new partner? sorry if that's really nosy.

why don't you get a mini bus, Kimi, then you could do airport runs on the side as well? .

cazboldy · 12/02/2007 09:47

don't know if it even matters to you, but rnning costs for a second hand 4x4 i.e services and mot's are going to be more expensive than for a people carrier.
We have a 7 seater 4x4 but we do need one (my husband is a dairy farmer and I have horses) but if we never needed to tow I would have a people carrier. I miss mine, and particularly like the toyota avensis verso.

cazboldy · 12/02/2007 09:48

we need the 7 seats too......they will all be full soon when baby no5 makes his/her appearance in april!

kimi · 12/02/2007 13:43

ah the DH1 and new partner question again
DH1 and i were together 21 years and we have 2 lovely sons, but we grew apart and despite my begging to go to relate DH1 did not think it was worth it.
I moved out and it was the hardest and most heartbreaking thing i have ever done.
I have a lovely new partner now.
DH1 and i are getting on much better, and although we are no longer a couple we are a family. DH1 and my new partner get on well and the children spend time between both homes.
DH1 and i are not divorced at the moment and i think i will always call him DH1 as i think to call him exh devalues him and what we had.
Sorry to be confussing.

LoveMyGirls · 12/02/2007 17:23

Thanks for explaining, i won't ask again.

cazboldy · 12/02/2007 17:42

that sounds really refreshing....and how lovely for your kids!

NappiesGalore · 12/02/2007 17:51

well done kimi - seems like most people carry on like irate toddlers when it comes to xp's and split/fused families... mores the pity. my own parents were like you when they split - as far as we were concerned that is - and quite right too. adults are adults and should act like it. imho. but that is a totally off topic rant!!

NorksBrideOHara · 12/02/2007 18:05

You can always run a diesel 4x4 on vegetable oil or even half diesel & half veg oil. It'll smell like a chip shop but it's much cheaper and much cleaner for the environment.

All the Landrovers do very well on this fuel. and if it's greener than most other peoples cars then you can ignore the sneers. Like I do.
