Not to put too fine a point on it, I am getting me snatch waxed tomorrow, I have never had it done before and I am really nervous about it . Is there 'wax etiquette' I should be aware of or anything . One of my friends has recommended I take some painkillers before I have it done. Any other tips?

I suppose what I am most scared of is the possibility of the person doing the waxing laughing at my 'you could lose a badger in it' bush!!! Do beauty therapists laugh at other womens bits??!
Sorry to put folks off their tea and everything, but should I trim it down a bit tonight so there's not as much there...??

So many questions .. help!! I suppose the most important one is, is it worth it?

SOMEONE else on MN must have had a bikini wax?!? Or has it been done to death, will there be anything in the archives?

I had a brazilian wax for the firts time a few months ago (at the request of DH)I'd been ahving 'norml' bikini waxes for years.
I was V nervous and took nurofen plus before going. I nearly backed out as I read about having to have no underwear on and kneel on all 4's etc.
It was great. Therapist who did it was so quick and chatty throughout, I hardly noticed it being done. She did it with my knickers on just getting me to pull them to one side for each bit etc.
was so busy chatting I didn't notice she'd taken the whole lot off!!
It did look a bit weird, but it FELT SO NICE, just like a babies bum, I kelp stroking it and Dh LOVED it. It was well worth it.

I would have a little trim tonight if I were you.

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 12/12/2006 20:06

I've only ever had it done in preparation for going into hosp to have ds2! Kind of holiday mentality thing.

Have to say, it hurt like hell. But I've been told its alot more sensitive when you're preg.

The girl, who looked about 14, spent more time saying 'god, your belly is huge' in total disbelief (was 38 weeks).

I would also say that, maybe its just me, but I felt a bit odd as I wore boots (no tights), and kept the boots on. I would've felt more at ease if I'd had bare feet (shoes to just slip off).

It didnt last much longer than just using cream TBH.

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:11

Oh thanks for responding SMileyspeople! When you say you didn't notice her doing it, do you mean it wasn't that painful? I'm not going for a brazilian, just dipping my toe in the water with a bit of a 'just at the sides' wax. I thought brazilian left a little strip, rather than nothing at all?
I've taken MONTHS to screw up the courage to get this done! I would guess that after the first few times, the hair grows in less thickly - is that right?

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:14

mustrunmore, yes I can kind of imagine the whole boots-still-on thing would have been a bit awkward! No doubt it will be some pert, toned 14 year old who does mine, laughing to herself as I attempt to scoop me tummy out of the way !! God, it just all sounds so UNDIGNIFIED!

OP posts:
clairemow · 12/12/2006 20:14

I'm a regular waxer - I haven't ever taken painkillers before, although think about it every time when I'm there..!! the therapist will no way laugh at all at you - sure they've seen much worse! She'll probably get you to pull your skin tight, that helps with the pain relief. Also if you take a deep breath in and then blow out hard as she pulls the strip off it really helps. I do always change my knickers before I go too, bit like cleaning your teeth before you see the dentist!!

I guess, being a MNetter, you've had at least one child - you've done something far more painful and much more undignified!!

clairemow · 12/12/2006 20:15

didn't see your other question before I posted - yes, if you get it done regularly, the hairs grow back much finer and fewer in quantity. I have my legs done too, and now there's hardly any hair at all on the back of my calves. Bonus!

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:17

Clairemow, I try to tell myself that childbirth was, of course, less dignified, but you are also MUCH less compus mentis when you're giving birth aren't you and really couldn't give a toss what's going on. I suppose I could get rat-arsed before going in!

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 12/12/2006 20:20

What about taking a friend to talk to? Worked for me when I had ds2 (epidural was hardly noticed, and I wasnt at all scared of the section!)

Can you get lazered for bikini line BTW? Must be a good long term solution!

SmileysPeople · 12/12/2006 20:20

Oh just the sides Peggotty?? lemonsqueasy.
Yes I thought I was going to be left with a strip, there was some lack of communication I feel.
Just having the sides done is positively dignified.
The therapists do it all the time and won't bat an eyelid. You won't regret it or look back.
You'll be having a brazilian before you know it!

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:23

Yes, I think I'm working up to a brazilian. But, you didn't say - is a brazilian all off or leaving a 'landing strip' of hair?

OP posts:
clairemow · 12/12/2006 20:24

also, it'll only take 5 minutes, not 8/12/24/48 hours, unlike childbirth...!!! (although agree about the compus mentis bit...)

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:29

Aha, my labour was a mere 4.5 hours (smug face).... did tickle a bit though !!

Have already had my legs done, which wasn't too bad actually. I'm quite looking forward to getting it done in a way - think my DH will be quite pleased......

OP posts:
SmileysPeople · 12/12/2006 20:32

Not untierly sure how the misunderstanding occured, but think she may have said 'all off?' and I said yes thinking that just meant a usual brazilian as oppose to normal bikini wax, and before you know it, it's as bare as the day I was born.
Bit of a shock.
But it gave a real kick start to routine sex for Dh and I. He loved it. Guess it felt like I'd done something a bit naughty just for him (obviously we're normally V straight laced)

Just the sides though that's less sexy more maintainance .

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:35

Hmmm smileyspeople, you are starting to convince me that a brazilian, or at least a more severe wax than just the sides is the way to go... There's no point in working myself up just for there to be barely any difference......

OP posts:
SmileysPeople · 12/12/2006 20:42

Maybe start with the sides first time, and once reassured by how easypeasy that is, next time go brazilian.
Or just go for it, nice christmas pressy for DH? Maybe I should go and suggest that on the Dh xmas pressy thread?
When are you having done?
I never thought i'd have a brazilian, I just promised Dh I'd try it once in a rash momemt. But now I'm a convert.
Wouldn't do as far as Gwyneth Paltrow and say it's changed my life, but it was a V good weekend

luckymummy2sophie · 12/12/2006 20:42

Peggotty,
You'll be fine!!! I have been waxed for years now, every 4-6 wks (I work in a hydro pool, don't wanna scare the patients off with my pant moustache!)
I agree to change knickers before you go and make sure you are 'fresh' down there. It is uncomfortable, but, a bit like having a baby, so worth it!!!!
mustrunthroughsnow....yes you can have bikini line lasored for permamnent hair removal. I am currently having laser hair removal on my facial hair (what a babe!!). The woman told me I would need about 6 sessions. I've had one and am thrilled with the results, no more tweezers in my daily routine!! £100 per session for facial hair, it would be more for bikini line, but IMO worth it. Think how much money you would save on waxing over the years!! NB it doesn't work on fair hair, only darker hair.

hello Pegotty. Tips on a 'sides tidy up'. wear smallish knickers so your therapist can get easier access. Also, don't wear your best pants as you're likely to get wax on them. in my experience the therapist will give you a towel to put across your waist, pull it back to expose one side and give you a tissue to tuck into your knickers. you'll then hold one side of your pants back while she applies wax and pulls it off. same for the other side.

SmileysPeople · 12/12/2006 20:48

Interesting Luckymummy, where on your face do you have lasered? I have noticed hair abive my top lip getting darker. I bleach it once in a while in the winter, but seem to be having to do it more frequently, so was wondering about laser traetment as i think this is going to get worse not better as I get older. what does the lasering entail do tell.
Sorry to hijack your thread Peggoty, still interested in your fanjo, do tell us your current thoughts.

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:49

SMileyspeople - getting it done tomorrow morning at 10. There's a beauty salon at the gym I go to so my DD will go into the creche and I can have a shower beforehand if I want to. Bloody Gwyneth Paltrow - did she really say it changed her life??!!
Luckymummy, lol at 'pant moustache'!! Mine's more like full beard. However, my mum informed me that you start to lose pubes when you get a bit older - ah, so much to look forward to eh?

I've always had a problem with regrowth in the bikini area - horrible ingrown hairs appear, and it puts me off the whole thing. What are some good ways of dealing with that?

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 20:54

Smileyspeople, how dare you hijack my thread with your soup-strainer moustache concerns, everyone look at my straggly snatch immediately!!!

Thanks for all the other tips, especially not wearing good pants - was airing my best boy-shorts as I type; will look out the 2nd-best Sloggis now!

Let us know how it goes Peggoty, and how far it goes....We want a lovely description of your new shiny fanjo.
Does Dh know you're doing this, or is it a surprise?

Peggotty · 12/12/2006 21:01

No, he knows, he's heard nothing but my 'sacrifice' for him . Off to get the nail scissors out (or should that be machete) and do a bit of trimming. Will let you know how it goes tomorrow. I will lie back and think of Scotland.
