...?

they often seem to be the same people who would think twice about factory farming and sweat shops

and then there's the effect of cartel warfare in Mexico, and cartels jocky for territory to traffick the drug into the US.

tens of thousands of people caught up and killed in the violence every year, with some parts of my grandmother's home state in Mexico becoming literally a no-go area.

expat

I think I feel strongly about it because I did a lot of research about colombia ..I actually had a conceptual art exhibition on the topic, well flower growing actually but I did have strong interest in the politics of cocaine but hadn't thought about it so much again until recently

expatinscotland · 23/11/2006 16:45

i lived in columbia briefly as a child when my dad's work took us there.

MascaraOHaraIncredibleSheHulk · 23/11/2006 16:48

coke is easier to get hold of than weed these days.

zippitippitoes · 23/11/2006 16:48

I would very much like to go there..I nearly did in the early nineties, but it never came about

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 23/11/2006 16:49

yet weed is easy to cultivate and grows wild in many places - in the US, a lot of my friends used to grow weed in the national forest.

Do any drug users care where their perferred drug comes from and how or what has been hurt or damaged (or often far worse) in the process??

I know I wasn't too bothered...infact I can safely say I didn't give it a second thought.

zippitippitoes · 23/11/2006 16:55

I can see that but then how do they equate it with caring about where their food, shoes, shampoo comes from?

OP posts:
nailpolish · 23/11/2006 16:56

no you dont care where it comes from you only care about 2 things

  1. the cost
  2. how good it is
nailpolish · 23/11/2006 16:57

but zippi

ethical shoes and chicken exist

ethical coke doesnt, but you love the coke so much you dont think about it!

People on cocaine are so boring. And so irritating. If they want to feel like talking about themselves all night of course they're not going to care about the moral implications of source and production.

MascaraOHaraIncredibleSheHulk · 23/11/2006 17:04

I think expat's comment

"yet weed is easy to cultivate and grows wild in many places - in the US, a lot of my friends used to grow weed in the national forest. "

Says it all with regard to the humanatarian (sp?) issues really..

Any fool can grow weed and yet coke is still easier to get hold of ?!?!??!

noddyholder · 23/11/2006 17:06

Agree re Kate Moss Anyone who had completed a successful rehab and who really meant business re recoverry would not entertain Pete Doherty

southeastastra · 23/11/2006 17:08

coke is the drug of choice for so many now as it's cheap and goes well with alcohol.

i had a friend that was very addicted to it, it really mucked her up.

It is increasingly rife in villages these days as well... it used to be seen as an up market drug but now it's much more affordable and much more available.

Speed used to be referred to as 'poor mans coke'.. I think coke rapidly over took speed in popularity after the peek of the pill fashion

nailpolish · 23/11/2006 17:12

yes you are so right mascara

speed is practically non-existant now

coke is more widely available but its not come down in price (so im told)

zippitippitoes · 23/11/2006 17:14

interesting the goes well with alcohol bit..apparently their is a particular syndrome in which coke combined with alcohol produces death

OP posts:
hatwoman · 23/11/2006 17:15

this is precisely why drugs should be legalised. I have had coke a couple of times and enjoyed it - I also think I'm adult enough to understand the implications and risks (to me) of taking it. However I can't live with the implications for others and won;t have it. However I don;t need a law to protect me which simultaneoulsy creates criminal drug production empires.

zippitippitoes · 23/11/2006 17:17

cocaethylene

just heard on five live

that cocaine can be brought in in live animals eg dogs..it is sewn into them under the skin..most of them die

Mhamai · 23/11/2006 17:19

Whether your a coke head or an occasional few lines at a party type, it still amounts to blood on your hands imo. I think more education is needed re, the what expat talks about as just opposed to, the drugs are bad for you ethic, it certainly changed my view as ashamedly someone who did the odd line in the past.
