No - even I don't have a thing for O'Brien Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 16/07/2015 19:51

The moment I realised why it was such an amazing book was when they discover the screen... I actually gasped out loud!

MadamedeChevreuse · 16/07/2015 19:57

Ooooh yeh the handmaidens tale is really good.

morelikeguidelines · 16/07/2015 19:59

Glad to hear it Livia

That is an amazing bit, you are right. "You are the dead".

I do always skip over the passages from Goldstein's book though.

morelikeguidelines · 16/07/2015 20:04

Just looked for the handmaid's tale on amazon.

It came up with all the books I like underneath - 1984, Brave New World, Never Let Me Go etc. So think I will like it. I guess because all these books are dystopia, if you search for one others come up.

AnneOfAramis · 16/07/2015 20:49

I have read TKAMB a gazillion times. Until I read The Count of Monte Christo, Wuthering Heights was my favourite dead writer book.

Which of the boys would make the best Heathcliff do you think? I am thinking Howie really, but I reckon Santi can turn his hand to ANYTHING.

FolknNorah · 16/07/2015 21:02

Hobbit
That one where they tell the story of the wife wot was locked up in the attic by her husband and set fire to the place.
I like the sound of the handmaidens tale and dystopian shit, but tbh I'm a light weight. Plus I'm tight.
Cat on a hot tin roof was good
Agatha raisin Blush

LetUsPrey · 16/07/2015 21:10

I like Agatha Raisin too Norah Grin, and Stephanie Plum. I'm definitely in the lightweight camp.

Fancy and Madame (I think - fellow Douglas Adams wenches) - have you read Last Chance To See? I bloody love it.

And Room With A View of course.

Enormouse · 16/07/2015 21:10

Norah! Grin nice to see you at last.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 16/07/2015 21:14

Norah ^

Cinnamoncookie · 16/07/2015 21:17

Hint for WenchReaders. Never read the end of 'The Time Travellers' Wife' on the tube.

Whoever it was read Guernsey Potato Pie (or whatever), have you read 84 Charing Cross Road ? It's one of my favourites, and the film is beautiful too.

Cinn Is that the one with the letters?

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 16/07/2015 21:22

NOooooooooraaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Hello m'dear (Jane Eyre I think, or WideSargasso Sea from the mad wife's point of view.)

End of term stuff - yuck. I'm avoiding as much as possible.

In other news, I am a Good Mother because I took DS to the beach after school for picnic.

And now I need to work.... because tomorrow morning will be taken up with School end of term stuff and today's efforts got derailed by another project becoming horribly urgent and, and, and...

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 16/07/2015 21:24

Oh Cin yes - that would be a bad move. I loved that book, but other friends just couldn't get on with it. wierd eh?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 16/07/2015 21:27

Trivia for the day - there is a copy of the Time Traveller's Wife in the TARDIS Tardis - I have seen it!

morelikeguidelines · 16/07/2015 21:36

Anne I always imagined Heathcliff to look more like Dog than the other musketeers but, you know, more brooding and sinister and that (!) than our bouncing little puppy. Although I know you are all saying he has growed up now for s3. Not sure Luca could quite pull it off (no offence) but no one ever can anyway (except laurence olivier).

MadamedeChevreuse · 16/07/2015 21:37

HELLO NOOOOOORAH!!!!!!

Anne do you need to ask? Athos for heathcliff surely? or aiden turner Sorry, I know this sounds unfaithful, but I just dont think santi is that much of a moody fucker.

Also, if it was pride and prej, athos would be darcy and aramis bingley. (Again, apols, I hate myself for saying it but there you go.)

No I have not read that letus

morelikeguidelines · 16/07/2015 21:38

Time traveller's wife should clearly be on the list too. Quite intrigued by what you have said about not reading on the tube. All I know about that book is that my cousin read it when he was much too young for the content.

FancyFancy · 16/07/2015 21:41

Evening, back from DD's prizegiving [proud mum emoticon]

Thank God you posted the antidote to livia's pic anne

morelike - I had always thought it was purely the failure of his revenge too, but suddenly had the idea when I last read it a few months ago. That, & what shit parents they all were, starting with Cathy's Dad & how that seemed to start a whole cycle of toxic relationships - I guess that's the different perspectives that you get at different ages. or something.

I've not read Last Chance to See letus

FolknNorah · 16/07/2015 21:42

Yes, wide Sargasso Sea. Grin

Night all, sleep,well wenchies

FancyFancy · 16/07/2015 21:44

I can't see Santi as Heathcliff either, seems more TB territory. I'm sure he could do it, I just don't want him too! And I can see where you're coming from re P&P casting madame, but I always see Bingley as a bit dim Blush

AnneOfAramis · 16/07/2015 21:49

Jane Eyre is the one where mad wife is actually in the attic and burns the house down. Wide Sargasso Sea is Bertha meeting Rochester etc and I think her own mother burns the house down in the Caribbean.

Mr Rochester has got Hugo Speer written alllllllll over it. Not conventionally handsome, but charming and flirtatious and significantly older than me Jane.

And, Heathcliff - Morelike, Tom Hardy did a fab job I thought. I take your point Madame, it does have Tom Athos written all over it, but I do think Santi has it in him.

FancyFancy · 16/07/2015 21:50

Helen I know what you mean about Good Mother â„¢. I feel like I need that little tick in the box sometimes - I Did Something with them, etc.

Santi is not Heathcliff, you are right. None of them are imo.

Treville as Brandon is a good call.

Santi is not Bingley, madame, wash your mouth out (or wash your thumbs?). Tom could do Darcy you although he doesn't look how imagine him. Wickham is actually supposed to be better looking than Darcy but they always cast a better looking actor as main character (ditto they always make Elizabeth better looking than Jane).

I don't think santi is cut out for Jane austen to be honest.

AnneOfAramis · 16/07/2015 22:03

Santi would make a fine Captain Wentworth actually.
