one on Saturday and one on Sunday

am I alone in finding these enforced silences irritating and annoying?

I was cross when they suddenly went up to 2 minutes - somehow that is sooooooo much more reverent than 1 minute, er, not.

But now to have them on both weekend days. Makes me [hmmm]

eh?

that's weirdy. its 11am on Sunday or not at all imo. and if you are shopping at that time you cannot truly be that arsed can you?

hana · 09/11/2006 17:08

how nice for the soldiers that you can't be 'arsed' to stop and think for 1 minute
it's only 1 minute

2Shoes · 09/11/2006 17:13

remembrance day is on the 11th of the 11th which is Saturday so 2 mins then
the march past will be on Sunday so 2 then
4 minutes in total.
to remember the people who died and fought in 2 world wars.
big ask i don't think

southeastastra · 09/11/2006 17:15

there are always two, one on the 11/11 the other on rememberance sunday.

marymillington · 09/11/2006 17:17

you misunderstand me.

what i meant was that if a person has chosen to be in the middle of their sainsbury's shop at that particular time, they are clearly not engaged in an act of reflection.

so please don't get all uppity.

southeastastra · 09/11/2006 17:18

why can't you reflect in sainsbury's?

misdee · 09/11/2006 17:19

when did it go to 2mins?

used to do the 1min when at work at safeway. you';d alwys get one person getting angry and trying to make you zap their shopping at that point.

2Shoes · 09/11/2006 17:19

i was in sainsburys when there was a silence for saom tragedy (think it was 9/11) and everyone stopped what they were doing and stood still and quiet it was rather nice

marymillington · 09/11/2006 17:20

maybe you can.
but there are probably better places.

lorina · 09/11/2006 17:20

Its not just sainsburys Enid. Its most of the country.

And we arent being forced. We want to.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 09/11/2006 17:23

"what i meant was that if a person has chosen to be in the middle of their sainsbury's shop at that particular time, they are clearly not engaged in an act of reflection."

perhaps that's the only time they can get to do their shop - doesn't mean that they don't want to stop and reflect.........does it???

so true sobernow

madmarchhare · 09/11/2006 17:27

Yes, I agree with sn.

2Shoes · 09/11/2006 17:27

it is nothing to do with preventing wars.
it is a case of remebering the people who gave their lives so that you have the freedom to shop on a sunday.

southeastastra · 09/11/2006 17:27

it has nothing to do with diana, but if you don't want to observe the silence don't.

JanH · 09/11/2006 17:29

Never mind, Enid, next year the 11th is a Sunday so they'll only have 1.

Just because we now seem to have silences at the drop of a hat, doesn't (for me) detract from the Remembrance Day (and Remembrance Sunday) period of silence and reflection.

I have no problem with standing silently for 1, 2 or even 5 minutes. I don't think we spend enough of our ever increasingly busy noisy lives in silence. I don't think it's just about preventing wars, but simply remembering and recognising what some people have given up for us to live the way we do. Not to do so is disrespectful.

2Shoes · 09/11/2006 17:34

ok sn I stand corrected.
I suppose for me it is a personel thing that i believe very strongly in .
the princess diana thing was totally different. remeberance sunday and 11/11 si a time (to me) to show respect.

beckybrastraps · 09/11/2006 17:37

Showing off?

The silence on 11/11 was campaigned for a few years ago, IIRC, by the British Legion and other Forces organisations. In addition to the silence that was already observed on Remembrance Sunday.

4 minutes in 48 hours - showing off?

chickeninabox · 09/11/2006 17:38

I got freaked out by a supermarket silence once (can't remember what it was for). Me and DP had been, errm, imbibing, the night before and had gone to get some shopping whilst still a bit fragile. We were happily browsing the prepacked snack section when everything just stopped, people, noise, tills, the lot...very unnerving to someone still off their head...
