So now Sainsbury's are holding TWO silences this weekend

one on Saturday and one on Sunday

am I alone in finding these enforced silences irritating and annoying?

I was cross when they suddenly went up to 2 minutes - somehow that is sooooooo much more reverent than 1 minute, er, not.

But now to have them on both weekend days. Makes me [hmmm]

Jon Snow isn't against poppies and says he wears one off air. He just isn't going to wear one on screen because he doesn't do any symbols - says he's always been sent ribbons by charities to raise awareness.

edam · 10/11/2006 17:41

And the British Legion aren't bothered about Jon Snow, either, if you read their statement.

Nov 11 has always been a national holiday in Canada, no schools, no banks open, that sort of thing
really thought it was strange that it was ordinary day in GB when I moved here.

jollymum · 10/11/2006 18:17

Read the whole thread, agree that the silence is non-negotiable and totally appropriate and deeply respectful. Have family history here too. BUT I wonder just how long this will continue for, perhaps in this current climate we may not have it much longer, lest it "offends" anyone"? I thibk all kids should know just how much sacrifice was made and that if it wasn't for that great sacrifice the kids wouldn't be here living in this totally "free" country.Make the most of the silence, one or two minutes because I predict it won't be around when my kids are grown up. This country is changing so much and respect for anything is going out the window.

"Additionally there is a rather unpleasant breed of poppy fascism out there ? 'he damned well must wear a poppy!' Well I do, in my private life, but I am not going to wear it or any other symbol on air."

who said he must damned well must wear a poppy?
I've never heard anyone say you must wear one and if they do they're out of order.

He's also moaning about Fiona Armstrong being allowed to wear her crucifix, presumably he's against veils, turbans and yarmulkes on air too, but that's another discussion.

DD (6) was telling me how she's been learning at school about the soldiers that died and how all her class wrote notes to say thank you and she told me exactly what she wrote (this is the most she's told me about anything she's ever learnt at school!) but she doesn't like poppies so she doesnt want to wear one even though most of her friends are and they're selling them at school in the classrooms. She's remembering and showing her respect in her own way not a way that has been dictated to her by other people.
I'm actually quite proud of her

am really struck by the idea that someone wouldn't be thinking of the war dead during a 2 mins silence but would be mithering about their peas melting. Presumably if you see someone you know in Sainsburys you never stop to chat for 2 mins in case the aforementioned happens? Maybe you should save the peas til last in your trolley so you can save on melting time between shop and freezer at home?

I glad to be stopped and reminded in the middle of what I'm doing that I'm only there and able to do it because people died for my country - much as I 'd like to think that I'm compassionate enough to think about it at other times, I don't. Two mins is enough time to really stop and think - and then again it'd never be enough time.

"perhaps in this current climate we may not have it much longer, lest it "offends" anyone"?

Sorry Jolly, that is JUST the sort of small-minded little-Englander mentality that those keen to pay respect but not wear the poppy quote when defending their decision.

ediemay · 10/11/2006 23:57

My Mum lost 3 brothers during WW2. I am honoured to be able to live in a free society and wish I could have met them. If people find the silences on 11/11 and Remembrance Sunday annoying - stay at home.

TheHighwayCod · 10/11/2006 23:58

NO stop
oyu loot need to rear ht HOWL thread
tis not abotu silence per se

its abotu havign TWO

Prego · 11/11/2006 00:01

Shall not be staying at home, or 'observing'. Shall be exercising my "free society" rights. After all, that is what the sacrifices were about?

ediemay · 11/11/2006 00:01

Actually, I can read, strangely enough. My post was in response to the spirit of the OP. I do not need you to tell me what I ought to do, thanks.

TheHighwayCod · 11/11/2006 00:01
