The illustrations for Where's My Cow? definitely have Pete Postlethwaite as Sam Vimes.

Lovely appreciation here by Stephen Baxter. I haven't read any of the Long Earth books - I take it they're well worth a go?

They are a bit different to his own stuff.
The best thing you can do is pick up "A Blink of the Screen", it contains the original short story the novels are based on, if you like that, the the trillogy of books is for you, if not, then you have a nice collection of Terry Pratchett stories, win win.

Idontseeanydragons · 16/03/2015 13:46

Having a re read of my favourites at the moment, I'm about half way through Reaper Man.
I reckon Tom Hollander (Rev) wouldake a good Vimes. He does world weary cynicism rather well...

Idontseeanydragons · 16/03/2015 13:46

*would make.

I think my favourite screen adaptation was Sky's Hogfather. Brilliant casting particularly Marc Warren as Teatime and Ian Richardson as the voice of Death.

Unfortunately the same couldn't be said about The Colour of Magic with a tragically miscast David Jason as Rincewind who seemed just too old for the part.

They must have felt obligated to give him the main roles in both when he put a lot of his own money into The Colour of Magic and The Hogfather.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 16/03/2015 14:13

that's wrong, and the Hogfather shouldn't be at the end of my sentence, he put money into the colour of magic only.

Jux · 16/03/2015 14:48

He was awful, wasn't he? I can hardly bear to reread any with Rincewind in since I first saw it; it's a shame because I'd quite liked Rincewind until then.

Haven't seen Wyrd Sisters or Soul Music. I shall seek them out but only if they're good! Don't want another Colour of Magic type turn off on my hands Grin

So those of you who know them, tell me whether to go for it or not!

Jasonandyawegunorts · 16/03/2015 14:51

I love soul Music, It's animated with christopher lee, Neil Morrissey and George Harris.

Jux · 16/03/2015 15:21

That does sound good.

Bogeyface · 16/03/2015 16:01

I could never understand why they cast DJ as Rincewind, he was great as Albert but just too old for Rincewind. Someone like Mackenzie thingybob from The Office would have been perfect.

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 16/03/2015 16:17

Going Postal had some weird casting too. Suchet was fabulous and Charles Dance as Vetinari was brilliant, but Richard Coyle just didn't quite do it for me as Moist Von Lipwig but then the writing left the character a bit one dimensional compared with the complexity that came through in the book.

I think one of the nicest things about the 3 that Sky have made is that STP appears in all of them.

iklboo · 16/03/2015 16:20

No, Thumbwitches - you're in Fourecks! Grin

iklboo · 16/03/2015 16:23

Mark Sheppard would probably make a good Vimes. World weary with some menace, but kind hearted as well.

Jux · 16/03/2015 17:22

You need someone less goodlooking for Vimes, I think. Broken nose etc, and older.

iklboo · 16/03/2015 17:26

Jimmy Nail? Grin

iklboo · 16/03/2015 17:28

There were loads of people reading STP on the train this morning.

Jux · 16/03/2015 18:01

Maybe, iklboo, but I'd prefer an actor Wink

iklboo · 16/03/2015 18:01

Grin Jux!

Liam Neeson (if we ignore Taken 856)

I first read a Terry Pratchett book, when I was 14, & it was The Carpet People, I have loved him, ever since. The Fantasy World have lost a great man..and so have his family. R.I.P Terry Pratchett..you will be sorely missed..

Alidoll · 16/03/2015 19:16

Terry Pratchett kept me going while working during summer months between university. Laugh our loud at times, I'd always finish a book smiling.

RIP Terry - may Binky carry you and DEATH laugh at your jokes and stories.

Jux · 17/03/2015 17:31

DD (15) is currently chortling over The Unadulterated Cat. Think CamRA.... Grin
