i am pretty clueless really. i have been to all the sites recommended in past posts on mumsnet and i have paid a fiver on genes reunited to look at records.

thing is they don't really give me any info.
tried looking up my great grandmothers death certificate but all it tells you is there age at death which i already know anyway.

so, how should i be going about this? it's something i have always been curious about but i don't know how to go about it!

zephyr..it was either Alice Maud Buckingham or Maud Ethel Petch. When you look at a marriage record on freebmd click on the page number next to it, and it will list the other names on the register that day. In this case the two above mentioned names are listed. I would say that Alice Maud Buckingham is your most likely.

minder34 · 20/10/2006 13:29

beat me to it 80smum!

80sMum · 20/10/2006 13:31

Aarrgh! I've got to stop! I had the day off work today to get some housework done!

Good luck with your searches everyone.

zephyrHellcat · 20/10/2006 13:33

Thanks guys!! That has to be them doesn't it?

I've been on freebmd all day trying to solve this - you guys are just too good

zephyrHellcat · 20/10/2006 13:35

lol 80'smum I have got sooooo much stuff I have to be doing today but this is just too addictive!!!

80sMum · 20/10/2006 13:35

I really am going to do some housework now - honest! Will no doubt pop back and lurk from time to time to see how you're getting on.

minder34 · 20/10/2006 13:42

Have just checked for Alice Buckingham and James Stanley on the 1901 census but there are quite a few of them. We'll probably need a bit more info to get further on that line. Anything?

zephyrHellcat · 20/10/2006 14:00

Hmm.... I'm not sure what else there is on those two.... They had a daughter but she wasn't born until 1912 according to dp's Mum. It's brill that you've found the maiden name though as we can use that to go one step further back I've started looking at dp's Father's side now which is even more confusing lol

DP will be so pleased!

80sMum · 20/10/2006 14:20

OK, so I've emptied the dishwasher - now back to the interesting stuff!

Zephyr, there's a James R Stanley aged 8 in the 1891 census, born in Starch Green (Fulham) son of Joseph Stanley, age 44, born Egham and Emma, age 44, born Chiswick.
The GRO records show a James Richard Stanley born Oct-Dec 1882 Fulham. My hunch is that these 2 records could be your man.

There's a marriage record for a Joseph Stanley and an Eliza Emma Cresswell in Brentford in Oct-Dec 1870. Looks promising. Probably yours.

Back to the kitchen!

sorry to gatecrash the board, but was just wondering wether anyone had any helpful tips to try and find my birth father. Am having some difficulty finding out information as i only have a guessed year of birth, and a name, but no middle. I cant even post off for my full birth certificate, as its going to be £12.50 that i dont have for another few weeks with half-term here.. (got to keep DS occupied) and im impatient All the sites i have tried just dont seem to be doing me much good Saw all your amazing finds and thought i'd ask the 'experts' how to do it

zephyrHellcat · 20/10/2006 19:41

80smum you're a star! And minder! How are you doing it? I've spent alllllllllll day today on freebmd, and GR and I'm getting so wound up with it!!!

I'm really really stuck on dp's dad's side. His Mum said that his Grandparents were Nathaniel Myers and Edith Clifton. I've found what I thought said Nathaniel Meyers (spelled wrong) married Edith E Clifton in 1929. Then found an Edith Elizabeth Clifton born in Islington which is right .... BUT I went back to look at the marriage records and it looks like Edith K Clifton which messes everything up!!!

As Nathaniel Myers isn't that common I thought I'd be able to find lots more on him. I found a Nathaniel Myers born 1900 in Pancras which is around the right sort of time, but can't get him on the census.... aarrgghh!!!!!!!!!!!1

zephyrHellcat · 20/10/2006 19:43

Fairie if you want to post some details I'm happy to have a go (although you can see I'm not doing very well today!!)

chubbleigh · 21/10/2006 00:46

Thank you Minder and 80's. I have worked out the Charles Derrick did not marry Jane he married Florence. I made this mistake because I am taking some information from a school bible with Jane Fryer written in the front cover but it has the names listed in the back of my grandad and all of his brothers and sisters. I think Jane died young as she vanished at a certain point and her younger sister must have kept her bible so it would have been a very precious thing to her.

FireFaerie · 01/11/2006 16:03

tis i, fairie, had a name change for bonfire night well, the name is Raymond Tayler, i was born in watford general in dec '84 of the same surname so he must of resided near there for a short while. my mum wont give me much to go on. hes older than my mum who was born in 1964.il try to dig up some more... thank you in advance for any time you spend on this

zePHYRWORKcat · 01/11/2006 16:05

Hiya Fairie - I'm looking into mine again tonight so will give it a go and see if I can find anything to help you

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 01/11/2006 16:16

I've got two Raymond Taylers on the publically searchable electoral roll -- don't want to post address details here for the sake of their privacy, though, and your Mumsnet profile is set to not receive CAT messages.

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 01/11/2006 16:40

Looking on Ancestry, there's a Raymond N. Tayler registered in the September 1956 quarter, mother's maiden name Lowe, District Christchurch, Vol. 6b, Page 313.

For anyone else planning to help out looking on Ancestry, I've also checked birth indexes

1956 Mar Jun Dec
1957 Jun Dec
1958 Jun Sep Dec
1959 Jun Sep Dec
1960 Sep Dec
1961 Mar Jun Sep
1962 Sep Dec
1963 Mar Jun Sep Dec
1964 Mar Jun Sep

and no Raymond Tayler is listed in any of them. The other quarters didn't come up on a search, which means I'll need to check them and navigate to the relevant pages individually.

This is a different Raymond Tayler from those I found on 192.com, by the way (different middle initial)

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 01/11/2006 16:42

Also nothing for 1954 or 1955. Do you think he could have been born earlier than 1954, Faerie? Because if not then Raymond N. looks like your man...

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 01/11/2006 16:47

No Raymond N Tayler died or married in England and Wales between 1984 and 2004, so if it is him then he's probably still alive...

FireFaerie · 01/11/2006 19:13

am about to phone my nan to see what other information i can pick up about how old he should be. i shouldnt imagine he was born before 1954. my mother's name was Joanne Smith when they had me, if thats of any importance. Thank you all so so much for this, im useless at this sort of thing, ive tried to find information before but to no avail. I thought my CAT messages option was set to yes, il check. Thanks Again

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 01/11/2006 20:04

Possible sibling of Raymond N. Tayler: Dec 1962 Sigrid H. Tayler (mother's mn Lowe) Hatfield 4b 133

No sign of a marriage or death for her either (at least not from 1984 onwards), and no sign of Raymond or Sigrid on electoral roll, phone book or FriendsReunited.

FireFaerie · 02/11/2006 10:17

didnt stop talking to dear old nan til half past ten! sorry for late post I have an aprox. age for Raymond now, and was about 9 years older than my mum so born aprox... counts on fingers around 1955? They also spent some time living in Kings Langley, Watford when i was born in 1984. Unfortunately thats all i managed to get out of a two and a half hour chat with various members of the Family. Thanks again!

FireFaerie · 02/11/2006 10:18

..Oh, and also, people are only refering to him as Ray.. i assume that would only be short for Raymond?

FireFaerie · 02/11/2006 16:11

Am jotting down all that information. Thank you so so much!! Lemonaid- have reset my CAT settings So i suppose it could be Raymond.N this sort of ties in with what my Uncle said about Rays Age. Now all ive got to do is figure out how to approach the subject from here

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 02/11/2006 21:45

Best bet (when you can afford it) probably to get Raymond N. Tayler's birth certificate. That will get you names of his parents. Then you can also look for them (if alive) or for records of their deaths (if dead). If they are dead then their deaths will probably have been registered by one of their children, with an address.
