i am pretty clueless really. i have been to all the sites recommended in past posts on mumsnet and i have paid a fiver on genes reunited to look at records.

thing is they don't really give me any info.
tried looking up my great grandmothers death certificate but all it tells you is there age at death which i already know anyway.

so, how should i be going about this? it's something i have always been curious about but i don't know how to go about it!

cheery...I've found a marriage between a John Gidman and ? Rodgers in 1920 in Manchester. Do you know of any links to the area?

zephyrHellcat · 19/10/2006 13:40

Do you have much info Nemo? If you register on genesreunited you can search all the trees on there to match names with yours. You can also pay £5 for 50 credits and each record you look up is only 1 credit. Are you in Scotland?

cheeryface · 19/10/2006 13:49

yes, i think thats it! my mum told me she married a john. thanx
does it give anymore info?

zephyr not in scotland..am getting a little confused as it is my dad I am looking for. Just found records for my mum getting remarried and both my sisters birth registrations but there is nothing at all on me. I have also just found my dads name but it could be a common name and his remarriage/first marriage thing and a child born to him a couple of years later. SO why would I not show up on anything??

portonovo · 19/10/2006 13:51

zephyrHellcat,

A quick look on www.freebmd.org.uk shows a Richard M. Brand whose birth was registered in the Sept qtr of 1910 in the Brentford district - could that be right person? If it looks likely, you can use the index given to buy the birth certificate for £7, thus giving you hopefully the parents' names etc.

There is also a Maud Stanley whose birth was registered in Fulham in Dec qtr 1911.

At the moment, FreeBMD is patchy on stuff between about 1910-1919, but is pretty good for many periods between 1837 and 1910.

zephyrHellcat · 19/10/2006 13:53

Nemo were you born before your Mum married? I was born with my Mum's maiden name and then registered with my Dad's name when they married so I have 2 different birth certificates registered at different times....

minder34 · 19/10/2006 13:55

cheery...only other info is the index number which would allow you to order the marriage cert on-line from GRO at Southport. Reference is Manchester District Quarter June 1920 Volume 8d Page 543. Marriage certificate will give you details of both peoples father (occupation and address) and this will give you a clue for the 1901 census.

zephyrHellcat · 19/10/2006 13:56

Thanks portonovo.... we found that richard brand too but dp is so bloody useless he can't remember when his birthday is but I think it's likely to be him...hopefully that's his Maud too I'm hoping to find Richard's parents so I can then look into the 1901 census but feels like I#m banging my head against a wall asking dp for info because he remembers nothing about anyone!

cheeryface · 19/10/2006 14:04

zephyr have looked under every name I can think of including my grandmothers..funny thing is my middle sister is registered 3 times at different dates but it is all her!!

minder34 · 19/10/2006 14:07

zephyr....had a few spare credits on 1837online so checked out Rodney..don't know if you've tried ordering his birth certificate but if not the Ref for GRO is District - Finsbury Quarter Sept 1932, Volume 1b Page 821.

throckenholt · 19/10/2006 14:29

zephyrcat - if you go to ancestry.co.uk - and go to the BMD bit you can wade through the indexes of the marriage registers (they are alphabetical (surname, then firstname) in quarters. So start from about 1934 and work through the Myers marriages - when you find a likely one then cross chek with the Clifton ones - see if you get the same index number in the same quarter.

Will take a while - but pretty much the only way to do it.

throckenholt · 19/10/2006 14:31

actually in the 1930s they give the spouses surname - so that will make it quicker.

merlin · 19/10/2006 14:35

sorry to hijack - but I want to trace my Mother's biological parents (she thinks she was adopted about the age of 4). Where do I start looking? Any help gratefully received. TIA.

minder34 · 19/10/2006 14:37

cheery...there is an Annie Rodgers - age 6 months on the 1901 census. Parents are Philip age 43 and Hannah age 38. There are also siblings Elizabeth, Hannah and Florence. Address is 33 Whalley Rd/Place, New Cross, Manchester? Does any of this ring any bells?

cheeryface · 19/10/2006 14:59

after annoying my mother i now know that Annies mother was most likely called Elizabeth, that Elizabeth died when Annie was in her teens and that there was a sister who also died...

i think the rodgers were maybe scottish but must have come to manchester at some point,

thanx for looking minder, i can't tear myself away from the puter today! got to collect the boys soon too

cheeryface · 19/10/2006 15:00

zephyrHellcat · 19/10/2006 21:50

Is there anywhere online to view the census info after 1901?

dolally · 19/10/2006 22:19

Can I hijack please? I want IRISH ancestor info online anyone done that?

cheeryface · 19/10/2006 22:21

i'm not sure

i have just found on the 1901 census an elizabeth rodgers, with a daughter Annie and another older daughter and the dates/ages fit

but how can i be sure i've got the right family and it says she was a widow so how can i find out who her husband was

questions questions .....

OP posts:
rustycreakingdoorbear · 19/10/2006 22:31

1911 census won't be available until 2012

zephyrHellcat · 19/10/2006 22:32

Cheeryface do you know her maiden name? - if so you could take a rough guess at the year she married (generally a year or 2 before the first child) and trawl through the records.

It sounds likely to be the right family though if the names and ages fit for more than one person .... addictive isn't it?!

zephyrHellcat · 19/10/2006 22:33

I can't wait that long!!!!

dolally · 19/10/2006 22:43
